    I agree its no ones business. Really there should be no list, or 'permits' anyway. That is all unconstitutional.

    You are an idiot.

    its not about a conflict between first amendment and the 2nd, its about privacy for citizens. As a prviate citizen, what i own should not be public record. Criminal records are public, and should be, but a legal act should not be.

    And i do agree, while they are within their legal rights, the paper was not being responsible, and are doing it just to push their agenda to try to instill fear into people exersizing their rights. Which is wrong to do.

    I have yet to meet anyone who has gotten a tablet for any kinds of real reason other than a toy.

    You need to get out more.

    Also the arguement has never been ' you dont need a laptop '. Its not a replacement, its an addition.

    Just beacause YOU dont see a point and its a toy to YOU, doesnt mean others cant want one and use it for other reasons. The same can be said about laptops, or a desktop too. Its all a toy to someone.

    Tablets are not the same as a netbook, nor are they targeted at the same market.

    With the netbook, i agree it was a rather odd device, stuck in a rather niche market. This is in drastic contrast to the tablet market, which is growing by leaps year after year.

    semi-useful, to whom? That is a self-centered comment. "Useful" varies from person to person.

    Not always.

    There are many people that no longer want physical 'media' items such as books and CDs/DVDs but still like to get a 'book' as a gift.

    But yes, for 'children' getting a small 'related' gift then shoving in a card isn't a bad idea. For adults, its a waste of money.

    No thanks, i want to actual hold the stuff in my grubby little hands.

    The closest id get to an e-gift is a visa type gift card ( wont get a store card, they are too restrictive ). But cash is still better, and there is no fee.

  13. That used to be a good idea, but as more and more governments get access to supercomputers that they can dedicate to 'monitoring', it wont work for long. Its really not hard to pick out that needle in the haystack if you have the resources.

    And remember in countries like china, they dont care what you are transmitting, the act of hiding is enough to get you jailed or executed.

    And you are sadly mistaken about our troops not firing on citizens. Many will do their jobs, as orders. They dont sit and make moral decisions. That is how order falls apart and even more people die. I bet they said that in Germany once too.. and see how that went.

    This is true, however for the most part ISPs/phone companies dont operate in a fair market but instead are virtual monopolies in their areas. And its getting worse every year as the big ones gobble up the few remaining mom and pop shops.

    We are here partly due to the mass exodus away from 'ivory tower' client/server systems that started back in the 80s due people like Woz, but now we are running as fast as we can back to it.. With people like Woz riding shotgun with us..

    Not that its a bad thing, as there are advantages to taking the user out of the 'systems management' part of the equation and handing it back over to the professionals.
