Think about it. We don't have a G5 Powerbook because we hear about the massive heat issues. Hell, just recently, I am having to take back my recently aquired G4 Powerbook because they are catching on bloody fire.
Secondly, I understand that Adobe is not making Photoshop and their other products for the Mac *first*. They are going to the PC, and then the Mac.
I mean, this quote says it all:
"I stood up here two years ago and promised you 3.0 GHz. I think a lot of you would like a G5 in your PowerBook, and we haven't been able to deliver that to you," said Jobs. "But as we look ahead, and though we've got great products now, and great PowerPC products still to come, we can envision great products we want to build, and we can't envision how to build them with the current PowerPC roadmap,"
So they go Intel. Who cares? Most of us are using Linux on x86, and we couldn't care less. The only thing that alarmed me was that they didn't choose AMD64, but thats just me. Hopefully, this will influence developers to port their stuff over to OS X now (which would benifit Linux indirectly imo). So hopefully we'll get a ton more games (yay!... games are a wasteland on the Mac) and apps because of this switch.
Things are abotu to get interesting now. Its like Jobs saying, "OK, Gates... lets fight in your ring."

The opinion expressed by you makes it seem like you are a little young (apologies if I am making the wrong assumption).
The reason I see that is because you are thinking with an 18 year old mentality. Priorities shift drastically the older you get. When you get into college, the playing field is quite different. You slowly grow to understand that noone gives a rats ass about sports, and the professors will just as soon kick you out of school than they would smile at you (the beauty of tenure).
But see, college is just different. People actually have to pay to go to school, for one thing, as opposed to being crammed in with hundreds of other walking hormones. You actually have to work to stay there.
I'm not sure about your high school, but mine gave far more scholorships to the students that had the highest grades (coupled with SATs). Think about it, it is in the college's best interest to give scholarships to students that will actually be able to *pass* their classes and not get kicked out.
I don't know, I may be ranting, but seriously... your post really does sound like a jealous high school kid. College is an entirely different setting, with the priority to succeed outweighing pretty much everything else...
oh, and getting laid. Thats important too.
...and drunk...you know, because you are away from home for the first time, and stuff.
I played it on the Amiga wayy back in the day, and you are right, that game (and ending) was awesome.
Funny story about that game. Do you recall the part where you befriend the alien (after breaking out of the jail), and he pats you on the shoulder and says something alien like, 'Mien tru-blaa'.
Well, when my friends and I graduated in 1993 from High School, sure enough, one of my friends upon receiving his diploma patted the principle on the shoulder and said 'Mein tru-blaa.'
The company I work for (S.C.I.) currently uses Citrix ICA Client, that I am told is your biggest competitor to the Tarantella line. What would you say are the strengths of Tarantella over Citrix, and what you are aiming for in the future to combat Citrix which has the majority of this particular market share? I would love to embrace SCO Tarantella, but not sure how to tell the IT Admin/board members how it is benificial to do so?
Well, I heard about this new Gnutella and just HAD to try it out. Afterall, I read this in the article on MSNBC and ZDNET. Here is what I read.
1)According to the article, Gnutella is this incredible tool that you can download at wego.gnutella.com. They talk about how its virtually ANONYMOUS and cannot be stopped. They ALSO said that it was FREE. Man, I gotta try this out. I followed the link and VOILA, there it was and it ran just by d-clicking on it! (talk about 'User Friendly'. I barely even know how to turn a computer ON!)
2) I read on ZDNET that the 'Mighty Met' (Metallica) is SUING this program called Napster because you can get their songs w/o paying them. Since Gnutella is supposed to be better than Napster (ie. according to the article, its anonymous and unstoppable), I will try it out. I searched for 'Metallica' and voila (again), I see about 5000 Metallica songs. HEY! METALLICA IS RIGHT! I WOULD SUE TOO!! (tee hee)
Subpoint a) btw.. as a side note, Southwestern Bell (www.swbell.com) is offering FREE DSL installation and equipment for only 40 dollars a month! They said that it will get 'audio' and 'video' 100 times faster. Boy I could use that!
anyway...
3) I click on 'Metallica - Fade to Black.mp3' and I got it at 50K/Sec! That rocks!
So, now I am sitting back, listening to Metallica as I ponder this whole situation...

P.S. Save the programming corrections and suggestions for this post. Please.. in the name of all that is Holy.
Nah, you didnt upset me. You have an exellent point. I can see the disaster you are indicating.
However, I dont think it would be so bad if the proper marketing was executed. I come from the Amiga line of computers. Clearly written on the box were the system requirements. (Ex: AmigaOS 2.0 or greater, 2M+ of RAM required). THIS in and of itself would make users WANT to buy the 'upgrades'. So say they have the X-Box released. Two years later, they come out with the 'X-Box Plus Upgrade Kit ' which includes a new processor and 3D chipset (thats backwards compatible with the OLD games). Games released that were programmed for the new upgrade do not work W/O the upgrade installed. So this is a marketing move AND a technological move.
Now lets talk about timelines. You can pretty much milk a gaming system for all its worth in about 2-3 years. THAT would be the moment when the upgrade would hit. The problem would be to convince people that the upgrade would be like buying a new system alltogether at a cheaper price. I'm not marketer, but I suppose that could work as well.
Now I will hit 'Preview'... ahh.. yes... and now.. this but*click*
Actually... mine was a legitimate post. And yours was just rhetoric attempting to belittle. <BR><BR><BR> You state, "The whole point of a game console is that the performance stays fixed, developers learn to squeeze performance, games just work, and so on. <BR><BR><BR> Well, ok, thats all well and good. So, say i upgrade my processor. How does this impact the games development or performance other than it being able to run faster, higher fps, etc? What about 3d archetecture? MicroSoft may have a winner on its hands if it does the following. Now pay attention. They are on the verge of something very cool in the game console market. Like everything Microsoft does (they copy), they can copy the spirit of the home PC with this by making it UPGRADEABLE.!!
Now, lets think about this.
They are pricing it 'competitivley' (sp) with PSX 2. When you buy a PSX 2, you are stuck with what you got until Sony comes out with PSX 3. Now with the X-BOX, what if you could UPGRADE it? For example to incorporate the new 1Ghz processor? Microsoft need only sell the 'upgrade' to the box. That would reduce their own cost (dont have to constantly re-engineer an entirely new system) and just sell the chips. What about 3D hardware that NVIDIA will undoubtably make for the machine after the initial launch? Well, why not sell THAT componet as well? Bigger HD? Why not? More RAM? Sure. All these mean that ultimatly they will get more money per console than PSX -2 will, at least on the Hardware side. Sony sells PSX 2s, MS sells X-Box and all the 'upgrades' at approx 100 dollars a pop.
See the comparison? This can be the first MODULAR game console. They just need to make upgrading it EASY. Just pop the case off, take the 'Upgrade Kit' and stick it in the slot. Badda-Bing/Badda-Bang... you have a new 'upgraded' X-Box.
They can move much faster in upgrading than the PSX 2 can in re-engineering a whole system.
Now, will it be BETTER than the PSX 2? Well, probably not using x86 archetecture... but.. who will know that? You and I... yes... but will the masses know that? Thats whats important. They will see '1000 Mhz UPGRADE!' Thats all you have to say, and the masses will think, '1000 Mhz? My LORD that a lot of something! Buy it!'
Think about it. They are on the brink of something really good. To give you an example, I havent bought a new computer in about 2 years. Why? Because my old one has been upgraded... and upgraded... and upgraded...
This is Offtopic, but this is the last time I post.
Take a look at this particular thread. How the Hell does moderation WORK on here? Take a look at this subtopic 'Re:Slashdot warez kiddies'.
Now notice the ones that got moderated UP. The ones that were all on one side of the board (Napster is for pirated software). Every other opinion was NOT aknowledged. I, personally liked the one guy who said, "Is CuteFTP to blame for pirated warez?". THATS A GOOD FUCKING POINT. I would moderate that up for that sentence.
Moderation sucks on here. Now, I am sure you moderators will now get angry and moderate this down, I dont freaking care. Out.
My LORD.... tell you what... next time you make a knee-jerk assumption like that, be looking for a check from a record company.
What do you have to gain by comming in here and saying crap like 'We all know its for pirating.' Sorry to dissapoint you, Mr. Holyer Than Thou... but I actually use it to disperse my friends OWN music that he makes. W/O glorious Napster and even the MP3 phenomenon, he wouldnt have gotten NEARLY the exposure if he had to rely on pressing his own expensive CDs or begging the big multi-billion dollar company that he was worth wasting their time. And guess what... he doesnt do it for freaking money either. He does it because he likes to do it.

I, myself, am not a very good writer, nor can I really express my opinions or questions very well (just look at my VERY SHORT history of replies. I have never gotten more than a 1 on score on here, but I understand why taht is.:) ).
But my point is this. I am very happy sitting in the background, and listening to qualified people talk about technical issues, and perusing through the discussions. Never do I feel I have to join them unless I have a question, or a suggestion. But right now, I have to agree with the people that do not like Katz.
To me, Katz is a sensationalist. To me, (and thats all I can speak for) he comes across as an arrogant son of a bitch. Anytime someone criticizes him, he points out everything he has ever done in his writing career. (Rolling Stone, GQ, whatever else fish-wrap people read to masturbate mentally). Whenever someone questions his opinion, his first reaction is to point out all the 'important' people he talks with, and that if we knew of all of the discussions he has with all these technophiles, CEOs, etc, we would be floored!
He even talked about how much mail he gets from everywhere "including overseas". Yes, Katz.. great. overseas mail. I get that too from my pen-pal.
At any rate.... my suggestion is this:
Why dont we make USE of the Polls we have on Slashdot and conduct one about Katz. Very simple:
Do you want Katz out or in?
Check one: () Yes () No.
I would very much like to see the results of that. NOW, Katz, we will see if Q*bert is right or not. Put your money where your mouth is and put up the Poll. I would vote No, personally, because I am so sick of sensationalistic writings:
"BAN AMAZON BECAUSE THEY NOW HAVE ELECTRONIC STUFF!" is a great example of how sensationalistic you are. Uhh.. yeah Katz.. that helps me learn technical issues like how to keep my kernel in Linux tight, and how to run a distributed network. Amazon.. yes...
I always thought it was such a smooth move back when Mandrake first came out:
"Red Hat with Fixes"
My friends and I were like 'ooohhh.. how cheap.'
But now... Mandrake is comming out BEFORE Red Hat. How can one make a 'Red Hat with Fixes' w/o seeing the latest Red Hat? Or have they finally morphed into their own solid distribution with its OWN custom fixes, etc.?
BELOW IS OFFTOPIC:
---------------------------------------
My last thing that anyone can respond to is: Whats to stop Microsoft from creating their OWN Linux distribution? My God, they have the money for it. Can you imagine?
"Microsoft Linux 1.0 Professional"
With that kind of marketing power, would that be a bad thing despite the GPL protecting Linux kernel? CAN Linux be destroyed by the 'If-You-Cant-Beat-Em-Join-Em' mentality? Please respond and thank you.
Hello everyone. I used to do tech support for DirecPC about a year ago. I must say that that product is absolutley horrible about 80% of the time. The reason is because of a policy called the 'Fair Access Policy' or "FAP". This means that if anyone is 'abusing' the system, they slowly **WITHOUT WARNING** ratchet down your feed to the speed of a 56K modem. This then stays that way until you either
a) Cease the 'abuse' of downloading (which can range anywhere from approx 50M to 100M.
b) Log off for about a day.
In both of these cases the speed slowly rises back up.
Also, another issue that is of concern are the gateways that it uses. They FREQUENTLY went out. This (of course) would mean that a lot of people would get slow downloads (or none at all) for days at a time.
When the customer called for ANY of these issues, we had to keep a tight lip on everything that was happening. We had to do one of the following if it came to a gateway or a FAP issue came in (which was 95% of the calls):
a) NEVER tell them they are being FAPed, and never mention that process. Blame it on something else.
b) Blame the weather.
"Sir, is it cloudy outside?" 'Yes, its a bit overcast but the signal meter says its strong.' "Yes, that could account for the slowness and it should clear up when that does.'
HAHAH... I swear thats what we were supposed to say.
Finally, installing it can be a pain since you are looking for one transponder thousands of miles away. The window is about 3 centimeters wide, and some people simply cannot find it at all.
While I dont mean to bash the company, this is just what the MAJORITY of the problems were. I would recommend another alternative, but just like every argument, there is another side. There WERE some satisfied customers, but these were ones that did infrequent (at best) web surfing and then turned it off.
I hear the death knell in the distance of the desolate landscape.
My respect for Linus is has died....
'Why, oh Why!!!' I shout as I raise my hands to God....
For Linus got p0nked in Quake by Taylor....
:):)
Transmeta heat management due to lack of certain aspects of the x86 processor, and changing voltage on the fly depending on the program is something I have never seen before. My God, maybe its time I bought a nice laptop....
Granted, I am not new to Linux, but I am not a guru either. However, one of the biggest things I feel that these distros should wait for before they reach the Big 7.0, is XFree86 4.0. I mean, isnt that comming out in about 2 months anyway? With that, games or any other 3D application will be possible for idiots (like me) to configure. Its a HUGE step (imho) that Linux will take, and 7.0 would reflect this change.
Dear Mr. Woz, My questions regard the Apple I specs. You are well-known to be an educator in the computer world. I heard that the original Apple I specs were given away by you for the benifit of other eletrical engineers. I have looked all over your site for info on this. Is this true? If so/not, what do you think of GPL'ing the Apple I specs? I hardly doubt that anyone with those would create something that would be a competitor to the new G4's, and it would be an exellent tool for budding engineers of all ages to try to tackle and to learn the basics. Thanks for your time. ++Om
One of my recommendations is the Neo Geo Pocket. The newest handheld game system from SNK. You can get information about it here: Its a 16 bit tiny color handheld that gets *40* hours on 2 AA batteries. Two can be linked via a cable or RF port.:)
www.snkusa.com
The cost of the unit is only about 70 bucks, and at www.kaybeekids.com they are selling the Handheld with a free game, AND a $10 dollar gift certificate if you use the code word 'FIRSTTIME'... WITH FREE SHIPPING.
SO... to sum up.. a perfect color, 16bit handheld... with free Contra-like game... with free shipping and 10 dollars off. How much!?

I would very much like to see the results of that. NOW, Katz, we will see if Q*bert is right or not. Put your money where your mouth is and put up the Poll. I would vote No, personally, because I am so sick of sensationalistic writings:
"BAN AMAZON BECAUSE THEY NOW HAVE ELECTRONIC STUFF!" is a great example of how sensationalistic you are. Uhh.. yeah Katz.. that helps me learn technical issues like how to keep my kernel in Linux tight, and how to run a distributed network. Amazon.. yes...

This is an honest question:
I always thought it was such a smooth move back when Mandrake first came out:
"Red Hat with Fixes"
My friends and I were like 'ooohhh.. how cheap.'
But now... Mandrake is comming out BEFORE Red Hat. How can one make a 'Red Hat with Fixes' w/o seeing the latest Red Hat? Or have they finally morphed into their own solid distribution with its OWN custom fixes, etc.?
BELOW IS OFFTOPIC:

"Sir, is it cloudy outside?"
'Yes, its a bit overcast but the signal meter says its strong.'
"Yes, that could account for the slowness and it should clear up when that does.'

:) :)
My respect for Linus is has died....
'Why, oh Why!!!' I shout as I raise my hands to God....
For Linus got p0nked in Quake by Taylor....
Transmeta heat management due to lack of certain aspects of the x86 processor, and changing voltage on the fly depending on the program is something I have never seen before. My God, maybe its time I bought a nice laptop....
War Transmeta.

My two cents.
War Linux!

Two can be linked via a cable or RF port. :)
www.snkusa.com
The cost of the unit is only about 70 bucks, and at www.kaybeekids.com they are selling the Handheld with a free game, AND a $10 dollar gift certificate if you use the code word 'FIRSTTIME'... WITH FREE SHIPPING.
SO... to sum up.. a perfect color, 16bit handheld... with free Contra-like game... with free shipping and 10 dollars off. How much!?
59.95 flat.
