I'm not trying to argue with you, but I was wondering what emits more CO2 consistently. And how common do 'natural' forest fires occur? Are these fires even natural? I remember hearing a lot about clear cutting for cattle in the rainforest and whatnot. I'm not too sure if that's still occurring, but that might also be a factor.
Although I like how you made known the difference between global warming and ozone depletion. Could there be a relationship between the two? If we have a less protective ozone, would we be more likely to have extreme global warming/cooling?
I use iMacs at school and I honestly can't see why these things are soo great.
I mean, I can understand how they can be good with newbies, they're pretty damn easy to use. Also they can be great for school because they're pretty indestructible (compared to PCs which you can screw up pretty easily.)
And as for 'Aesthetics' I can really give a shit about that. Know why? After a while I get tired of the same looks, no matter how 'pretty' it is. The iMacs at my school are pretty and blue and all but they get boring after a while. All I want to do is use them, not look at them. I might as well date the next hot chick that walks by because she's pretty right? Even if she's some dumb airheaded broad.
Also, what's the deal with the one button mouse? I think that 2 is minimum for a 'real' computer. I've heard that you can use a USB PC mouse and the other buttons work. If that's true, never mind this argument.
All I'm trying to say is Mac's aren't that great. But I wouldn't buy a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. computer anyways because I rather build it myself. And if you just want a computer that 'works' then I can understand why you would want a Mac instead of a PC.
And as for hardware, I can agree that Macs have better hardware, and if were ever to get a laptop it would be an Apple because I want reliable hardware and I don't want to mess with hardware that small and crammed.
Apple has come a long way but it's gonna take more than just 'prettiness' to get me to buy a Mac, it's going to take more games and the ability to build my own, before you see one on my desktop.
I'm not trying to argue against your comment, but I believe that there are also other factors in why some life expectancies are better than others.
Look at the typical American (US,) we (a majority) eat Fast Food everyday and don't walk anywhere. We just drive our cars around. Now compare that to other countries where their lifestyles are different. I know many other European countries and Asian countries eat healthier and get more exercise.
Although I do agree that we need 'socialized' health care because I am from California (yes we're all 'commie bastards' here) and I have seen what 'deregulation' has done to the energy industry. Since power is a necessity, we can't just boycott it when the prices are jacked up. Same with health care, you just can't stop going to the doctor and expect everything to be fine. What I'm trying to say is anything we depend on becomes privatized there always seems to be price gouging (i.e. gasoline, power) and the gougers get away with it.
BTW, I don't get why Republicans in America are always fighting for highway expansion when it is 'socialist' (and heavily subsidized), and they won't even consider alternatives like intercity rail and monorail because it is subsidized (maybe because they're backed by lobbyists, damn the polical party system! Now I'm just rambling...)
I'm using kernel 2.2.20 with the Riel VM (I'm guessing) on a Debian box. I've noticed that everyday my memory slowly creeps away. First I had 100MB free RAM and now it is down to 20MB after 14 days and still is going down. Could this be related to the van Riel VM? or perhaps the ext3 patch I'm using. Sorry if this is seems offtopic.
Monorails aren't anything new, but their design is pretty modern (compared to "light rail.") Why are we constantley reinventing the wheel when we have a cheap (cheapest elevated transit,) quiet, and environment friendly alternative that has been around for ages. I only wished that we could see more monorails in America. Light rail has done nothing but wasted money. Monorails can fit through dense areas and don't have to stop at traffic lights like light rail does. If we want public transit to be a better alternative to cars, we're gonna have to put it in the air (as in elevated.)
If you want to learn more about monorails I would recommend checking out www.monorails.org
Genius! Brilliant!
That's a great idea! I think this will stop a lot of the confusion and discouragement due to all these confusing file formats for Star Office, Koffice, Applix, etc. A standard file format would be a great blow against Microsoft's stronghold on Office Suites. Imagine people in the workplace, Joe Blow is using Star Office and wants to send a document to HR which are using Koffice, just save it in ".gnu,.osd (just making up random names" and wham bam thank you mam, it's done. No "kernel hacking" or anything. Of course this wont solve all the problems, but it's a step in the right direction.
And as for the conversion tool, pure genius! Instead of worrying what Office Suite converts the best, we can worry about other features that we like or don't like, and let the separate conversion tool mess around with converting.
I think I'm done kissing your ass, but anyway, it's a great idea!
I guess the main reason I likw IceWM is the taskbar and 'start button.' I know it seems lame but I'm used to that setup and it seems to work the best (and fastest) when I'm multitasking.
I use MacOS 9 at school and I hate it, it seems too damn clunky in my opinion, and it seems like many Window Managers emulate MacOS in a way.
So is there any other WMs like IceWM that don't take a lot of memory. I'm planning to set up a few desktop machines with a P90 and 32MB of ram.
