  1. NEW.NET is filth on Fair Software Installation · · Score: 1

My family's computer started acting weird lately. I didn't have a clue what it was, sometimes it would randomly freeze and other times the desktop icons would never load. Once in a while I would get an error message containing the words "NewDotNet." I asked my family if they installed NewDotNet? And they all said "duh what?" (Luckily I have my own computer.) So I finally uninstalled the damn "program" and everything seemed to go back to normal.

I still have no idea where this NewDotNet virus came from. Yes I said virus! This code is intentionally installed without the user's knowledge or consent (I bet Bill Jones is now claiming that "Spyware is innovative.")

New.net claiming it "isn't their responsibility" is a bunch of BS. Look, "free" programs like KaZaA need to make money somehow, so they use spyware. In order for KaZaA to get money they need to get it from companies like New.net. So New.net pays KaZaA to exploit their users. Clearly New.net is responsible.

I'm just glad that I haven't seen any of this filth on Linux, BSD, etc. It seems Linux software programmers have a lot more respect for their end-users, but what's stopping from companies cashing into the 'Linux craze'? If AOL ever buys RedHat, I pray to god they won't ruin it like they did with Nutscrape. Having all these AOL Free Trial! Icons all over the desktop and installing AIM. Imagine having a kernel message stating "Subscribe to AOL now!" every 30 minutes.

I believe, in the long run, that it caused more harm than good.

Please, have you ever noticed that the "big bad government" subsidizes the highway systems? Do you even realize how much of our car culture is subsidized? All the way from the military protecting oil in the Middle East right down to your suburban street being maintained. I want some alternatives (after all, isn't capitalism about choice?) Maybe YOU like to drive from point A to point B everyday of your life and still think it's freedom, but I don't. I rather sit back and relax on a train or monorail.

I agree with you that there are some weirdos on present day mass transit systems (I know since I take the bus,) and subways aren't that great (they're loud, expensive, and dark) but remember that they're not the ONLY transit alternative. I think if Americans truly want mass transit to work, local governments, businesses, and people need to work out a plan to implement transit the most efficient way possible. Instead of wasting ridiculous amount of money on trolleys ('light rail' is the modern term nowadays) that don't solve our traffic problems.

And about my mom and dad supporting me...hardly, if they would, I would be driving a car right now :P I'm willing to hear your argument, but don't use childish comments.

I'm surprised that politicians aren't against spam. Don't they usual get tons of it? Doesn't this disrupt their work, and cause them to not read important emails? Or does this give them an excuse not to read their email at all?

As for me, I'm going to vote for Davis (yes I'm turning 18 in June, scary isn't it?) Because he seems to be the only one that's pro-mass transit. The rest seem to just want to build more highways, and if you've been to California, widening highways has not helped. When Sonoma County government officials for fighting for US101 highway widening they never mentioned rail. When they met with Davis people protested outside and in the end he gave tons of money for rail service and only $10 for the highway widening.

I'm just giving my reason why I'm voting for Davis, if you don't like him, I respect that. Although I think Simon is probably the better of the Republican candidates.

I think the best part is that these students actually learn how to install an operating system, which is pretty damn useful in the tech field in my opinion (more than clicking around in Word, or making some cheesy PowerPoint presentation.) After they've all finished this, they are free to take it home.

Same here, I was too poor to afford these games when I was younger. I used to love playing games like Street Fighter II, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario All-stars on my friends SNES.

I also missed out a lot on computer games because I could never really afford a CD-ROM drive.

But now I can afford more and guess what? I'm trying to catch up on all these great games I missed out on. Especially Adventure games like Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max: Hit the Road, Monkey Island series, etc. I also love the SimCity series. Where can I get these? And the owner of the Home of the Underdogs makes a good point about Abandonware, many computers cannot play DOS games anymore, nobody has a 5.25" drive, and floppy disks do die after a while (acquire bad sectors.)

It seems like the publishers and developers are divided. Publishers generally do not like Abandonware and developers generally like it somewhat. The article makes a good point, a lot of these developers are no longer with the publishing companies so they no longer make money from them. I can honestly give a shit if the publishing company is not making money from the old game, but I rather support the developer. Perhaps, for games that I always play (i.e. Transport Tycoon Deluxe) I could give a small donation to the creator through paypal. I don't want to give more money to a guy in a suit (the publisher) who already has enough as it is, while the codemonkey (developer) is trying to make a decent income.

Games nowadays hardly interest me, most offer some new buzzword feature in the games, but it just comes down to flashy graphics and no substance (kind of like an airheaded blonde.) Sure there is new(er) games I still like, but they are rare and they stand out (i.e. Tribes 1.)

I'm still going to play Abandonware games, and I'm still going to use emulators.

Perhaps these developers should open their source code? :P

Now I just use the Win2k boot loader for Win2k and Win98, and I use a linux boot floppy for loading into Linux. Certainly one of the most annoying errors I get with Linux (and computers in general) are the ones nobody else gets. Of course, Linux is lucky to have strong user base who are involved in many chat rooms, message boards, and mailing lists that some guy in Taiwan may have the same problem as you did and found a way to fix it.

I get to format computer HDDs and stick Linux on them to be set up as Linux servers for useful things like SIP (VoIP stuff) and creating web servers. I've learn a ton of stuff about Linux and what's better is I get paid $9/hr! It's like paid training! Of course I do administer Windows2k Servers, but it's still good to learn other OSes. Also I get other benefits like free 2.7mbit DSL with 5 static IPs, and two domain names.

I have only four complaints. First of all, I take it for granted all the time, and I need to realize that I'm truly lucky. Second, things can be a bit disorganized and the boss just wants things done, fast. Third, security isn't really big deal to them, but I think it is, of course this goes back to them just wanting things done. Finally, since it's a telecommunications company I have dealt with many co-workers getting laid off and it sucks. It sucks seeing hard working adults with families having to leave their jobs, while I'm still here and I don't *need* the job. What's worse, is that I've also gotten a job offer from another company (that I now also work with) that deals with wireless internet access.

It's crazy having all these opportunities at 17, I just hope they're still here in the future. Of course I'm careful with my money (cheap) and I've saved most of my money that I've made. Unfortunately because of this (at least I think so) I don't have a girlfriend or a car (I'll wait.)

So to keep this post ontopic, I would say I love my job (internship) and I agree management can be a pain in the ass if they don't know what they're doing, don't take input from workers, and become nazis. Basically, you should have the proper qualifications for the job.

You may think different, but I believe they're both hypocritical bastards. Also, I believe that U.S had an all out propaganda campaign, stating Communism is 'evil' (like Bush and his 'Axis of Evil') and some people believe Communism is truly evil.

But don't you think the Soviet Union had an-all propaganda campaign against capitalism? I wouldn't doubt. So does that justify our propaganda? No! If we are supposed to look better than the Soviets, we wouldn't want to stoop down to their level right?

And what pissed me off most of all about this whole Anti-Communist BS (especially the Red Scare) is if you had an opposing viewpoint to how some things are done in America, you would be called a goddamn communist by some right wing supporter (oddly, if you're against Bush you're a terrorist.) This udder and pure bullshit, this gets rid of debate, free thought and deteriorates democracy.

Don't get me wrong, I love this country, and I'm willing to fight for it.
