The (main) goal was not losing customers to etoy. etoy didn't sell anything. It was to do something to address customer complaints. They wanted to do something about kids and other customers going to what they thought was etoys.com, and got something quite a bit more offensive to them than what they wanted to so.
Let's not ignore the fact that, in any other situation, etoys is a hero - one of the largest sites on the web running linux/perl/apache and a plethora of other free software tools.
But the problem is, it's been 2 years. TWO YEARS!!! None of us can afford to keep on waiting.
don't hold our breath?? Maybe downloading a 5M tarball isn't too much of a problem, but the people who use our products aren't going to do that. Oh, and compile it and run it on windows.
Realistically, we're going to have to wait upwards to at least a year for N5 is in any sort of common use. Maybe more, and maybe never. (I tried it about a month ago and I couldn't stand it.)
another argument for this: MS using a linux version of IE to finish of Netscape? They've already effectively finished off netscape. Why build up linux to help finish off the pitiful remnant of a company. (I'm exaggerating a bit, but I hope you get my point.)
RedHat is already in some ways "the next Microsoft". They are the leader in commercial Linux. In the Linux world, they beat all other competitors in terms of usage. Microsoft became a monopoly gradually, with others like OS/2, yada yada losing out because they couldn't compete (in some form or another). Now with people buying RedHat because they don't know what else is out there, SusE, Slackware, etc will lose out on some of that revenue. They may or may not be better, but they certainly don't have as much money. At some point, they may not have enough money to support their distribution, it'll disappear. Now, RedHat, in that sense, is certainly 'the next Microsoft'.
I don't like RH especially either. If RH bought Cygnus, they'd probably devote resources so that it is RH specific. Why not? You spend money on something, why don't you want to make your own products better with it?
RH can't be that bad if so many distros take them as their base. Windows can't be that bad, if so many people make applications for it. (I know, different argument, but it's all about following the masses - just like saying "if everyone's doing it, it can't be bad.")
Cygnus produces/supports some great open source tools. Cross platform. They've done a good job of it. Better job then RedHat has done of linux distributions, I would say. RedHat has taken linux, narrowed it down and made it their own, and contributed it back. Good thing, but you lose some of your freedom for ease of use. I don't want to see that happen to gcc/cygwin, etc. I write for Solaris, FreeBSD, and sometimes Linux. I'd like to see this world having choices. A world ruled by RedHat (or even Linux) would be only a couple steps better than a world ruled by MS.
They are not banning the teaching of evolution, only the teaching of evolution as proven scientific fact. It's a theory, and that is what it has been mandated to be taught as. Instead of seeing it as "now we must start believing in creationism again", it should be seen as a continuing search for evidence. We haven't (and will not be able to) prove evolution, but at least we can still continue to try.

No, you can't really win.

good for you. No one has forced you to use their disk space and bandwidth. If you don't want to agree to their usage agreement, then don't use it.
TPM was so sorely disappointing. That was the reason why it got so trashed.
