Your best bet is to rent the equipment and/or the idsn lines/ meeting space. The real cost is the isdn lines. (Yes you can use IP, but don't count on using your T1 for email, web, irc, etc while video conferencing. And from what I've seen most people use isdn.) IIRC ATT charges 54 cents a minute per line. Say you have a tipical conference, good quality video and audio- 3 pairs of isdn lines. For one hour, your isdn costs are almost $200. That doesn't even include the bridging service charges. Which you will need especially if the conference is international.
Figure at least $200 a/day to rent a polycom unit. That is supplying your own isdn lines. Most A/V rental houses have a 3 or 4 day week. ($600 - $800 for 7 days.) At my old job we charged $250 an hour with a 2 hour minimum for using our in house isdn lines, polycom unit, TV, conference room.
Video conferencing can be a HUGE headache. I've done way too many of them.:-) Don't wait for the last minute to organize the conference. Waaaay too many people with out isdn lines call 3 days before looking for a unit and they haven't even called for isdn istallation. It's not going to happen.
This is false and a common misconception. A salaried employee (who is required overtime pay) receives 1.5x his/her equivilent hourly wage. Being salaried does not expempt a person from OT, the position/job duties do. From my understanding management is OT exempt. (there are more exemptions but IIRC don't apply in this situation.) Your state may vary.
Heh. Point taken. I should of said "alternative" *smirk*
But I disagree with you went Punk died. If your time line is correct then the Dead Kennedys weren't a punk rock band.

Hmm didn't Crass say Punk died in '77, oh what Wattie said "Punk's not Dead!" in '80.

I think the orginal poster should of said was :
This article was written 10 years ago, when every punk rock band and their brother were getting courted by major labels. Right after Nirvana...
(Also Steve recorded one of Nirvana's albums.)
I think most punk bands that signed with a major label are now wondering why they did it in the first place. Maybe not, only they know.
Touche! Yes Sex Pistols, VU, Big Black, Pussy Galore, Iggy Pop, etc were great bands with LO-FI recordings. (Had add a few;) A producer and a engineer are two different animals. The reason I got into the audio field was because of these bands! Can you imagine what insert-your-favorite-lo-fi-album would of sounded like if they had a better engineer (who got it)?
There are some recording engineers that are cheap and excellent and aren't in the back pocket of the RIAA. Some^H^H^H^HMost of us love music and know what it like for a struggling band and want to help them out.
...it takes a producer with skills to make an album...
If you s/producer/engineer/ I'd agree. (Notice I removed 'that will sell'.) Recording and Mixing an album well takes talent. I don't know how many shitty mixes I've heard from Joe Schmoe's bedroom recordings. Other than that I agree with you.:)
I second that! Moxie is the best. I live in the midwest now, but my family is from Mass. So I only get Moxie a few times a year when someone travels to/from Mass.:( The thing with Moxie is either you LOVE it or HATE it. (Tho most friends that have tried it hated it.)
For those of you who don't know what Moxie is: it's kinda like Dr. Pepper but different. Dang I'm at a lose of words how to describe it. YUM!
From this article, it looks like the law will pass. Get a list of sites that are unfairly blocked, and start complaining. Given enough time wasted on unblocking sites, they'll eventually crumble. But be nice!
The thing is alot of "controlled" substances are available with a prescription, and I might add legitimate uses. Cocaine and it's derivitives (lydocaine) are aenesthias (sp?), Dexedrine, desoxen (which I think is crystal meth) are used for the treatment of ADD, and narcolepsy. It's a pain to get these triplicate 'scripts filled tho.
I see your point. I don't know the details of the contract that this college has with AT&T. But jeez this college has 35k+ students, it's one of the biggest in the US, and IIRC they have an OC-12. How many Mb/s is that?
Yea QT4 encoded with sorensen MPEG codec sounds really good. But the draw back is large file size. I had to Qualcom half-duplex (forgot the exact name of it or was is real-voice), the file sizes were extremely small. A 20MB voice only QT file compressed to around 70Kb, but it sounds like shit.
I could go on a rant, but I won't.:) But I'll just say that with the coming of larger bandwidths than our normal dial-up. Audio Quality will be (or should be) a much higher priority than it is now. What most companies don't realise or even think about is who do they think records commercials, or even music... Professional recording engineers with a great set of ears. (and good equipment)
If you need any more advice just give me an email.
I was resently working for a Web based training company as their recording engineer, but them umm haven't paid us employees since June.:( Anyway, I recorded on a mac using SoundEdit. I hated it, but we couldn't buy new software. I would have loved to used PEAK. After editing all of the files, I converted them to QT3. QT4 broke cue points, or markers. If you can get Media Cleaner Pro it works pretty good for converting audio and video files, and their customer support were really helpful. I got a few beta releases.:)
Does your company need a recording engineer?:) My email is ejarvi@megsinet.net
>the unfortunate reality is that in the consumer market... >the current digital products offer a better result than the current analog products.
Yea I know.:( I'm the type of person that gets annoyed by the 15kHz "noise" made by TV sets. It's extremely frustrating trying to convince non-audio people why I need all this expensive equipment.
rant mode = 1 Why do all these companies want somebody like a programmer or a graphic artist to do recording? Can you tell I'm looking for a new job?;) You might as well hire me to program, yea I _can_ program, but I'm not that good at it. You'll get as good recordings as my code. Let an expert do HIS JOB! Sorry had to get that off my chest.
As a Sound Engineer, CD audio quality is IMO not as good as analog. (read 1/2" 2-track) For a few reasons, 1) 16bits is not enough. I would love to see DVD audio be 24 bits. 2) Sample rate is too low. With DVD audio we can have a higher sample rate 96khz and up. I haven't been keeping up to date on the specs of DVD audio, so I 'm not sure what the bit and sample rate are going to be. Most likely they'll encode all those extra channels. Blech! When I listen to MUSIC, I only want 2 channels. Heh, I guess I'm a purist. In essense better audio quality. Note I use digital recording as part of my job, but just _prefer_ analog.:-) Gotta go to work, or I'd give a more in depth explaination.
Timothy Leary, when he was convicted of possesion of marijuana. His first cell was right next to Charles Manson, and to determine what type of prison he would go to, He had to take a 'Personality Profile' test. Tim wrote the test, while at Havard! As you can imagine he was sent to a minimum security prison.
WTF? Really We are the World that crappy 80's song so we give money to the starving people of Africa.

Nanny Ogg and Vorbis (can't remember his full name off hand) are characters from Terry Prachett's DiskWorld series.
Death on the Installment Plan, and Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand D. Celine.
John Fante and Bukowski.
Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus
This project slowed down over the Holidays, but it is still going. And it needs more people. A website was made, but it hasn't gotten put up yet.

Wouldn't something like unfuck.exe make the CD's copyable? (Besides the obvious analog copying)

From the article: The university has an annual budget of $75,000 for bandwidth.
I was just at a _community college_ board meeting, and they have a monthy bill of almost $10k.
Either this Uni has a severe lack of bandwidth, or someone isn't giving the whole truth.
