We're all missing the point. One of the pleasing features of TiVo is the ability to FF through commercials, should I want to do so. That's my right after buying the TV, buying the cable service, buying the Tivo and paying the monthly subscription cost. Just like I don't want popups on my computer, I don't want them on my TV. If TiVo follows through with this, they may lose me as a customer (which will be a very sad day for me).

Even Walmart probably doesn't even know what all that data means. Think of the processing power needed to make sense out of it all. I'm sure there are countless interesting trends that are lost in that data ocean.
I agree 100%. When I first moved to Houston, I tried to get Earthlink DSL. I apply for the service online and confirmed my order with a person through their customer service number. I waited... waited... still waited. Three weeks later, when I had received no service, no modem, no nothing, I called them back and asked what the problem was. "I'm sorry, since you live in an apartment complex, you are not eligible for Earthlink DSL service." It certainly would have been nice to get that tidbit of information three weeks ago!!
And don't get me started about those commercials!! "An Earthlink address makes a good impression." My ass it does.
I graduated in 1998 with a B.S. in Management. I looked around for a job but I wasn't very excited about it (also applies if you can't find one). So I made a decision: I would go to Graduate School. And it was the best decision I ever made. I pursued and acquired a Masters degree in Networking Technology.
Grad school toward a Masters or Ph.D. degree has several benefits. First, assuming you pursue a degree in a field you enjoy, grad school is fun. You only take the classes you want and don't have to worry about too many "requisites". Second, you have the opportunity to do things you usually can't do. For example, I was able to teach a networking basics lab and discovered that teaching is my true calling. Finally, professors treat you different when you are pursuing higher education...you become almost a colleague rather than a student.
All these benefits add up to a higher salary (and maybe easier time getting a job). I would HIGHLY recommend considering this if you can't find a job or don't want to get a job in your B.S. field. Best of luck!
This is representative of how the "little people" get screwed. If you look in any number of contracts for apartments, insurance, etc., it specifically states that you are responsible for their legal bills if they have to take you to court. But if you WIN such a case, you still have to pay your own legal bills!
Lawyers don't help anything either, saying that "If you don't win, you don't pay". This contradicts logic and encourages people to sue for anything!
I completely agree that is the plaintiff had to pay for a lost case, frivolous lawsuits in all aspects of society might be reduced tremendously.
This absolutely IS censorship. Just because it is a company and not the government...that doesn't change what it is.
"If you don't like the agreement, find another provider. It's their bandwidth."
There are two problems with this. First, most people with Cingular have signed some sort of contract. They don't have the option to leave, unless they pay some big fine, for something that wasn't in the contract when they signed. Second, the users pay for the bandwidth. If the phones run at 14.4 K, Cingular should have provisioned for users using 14.4 K. You can use up just as much bandwidth at amazon.com as you can at xxx.com over a 14.4 connection.
Finally, you all have forgotten the most important issue. If a company like Cingular starts censoring what people can see over their phones using bandwidth that they bought and people let it happen, it opens the door for other types of censorship. This is just like opening the can of worms (not like it hasn't been opened before but....)
