It is cool that there is a full version of a game that looks good for free, the bad news is that it is financed by us, as in the US Army. Yet another good use of yours and mine tax dollars.;-)
I really enjoyed the movie Identity. I had no expectations when I saw it though. It was a horror/mystery/psychological thriller all in one. The writing was excellent, the director did a good job, and the cast was impressive. IMO this movie was the most underappreciated/undiscovered good movie of 2003.
According to x3dchess.com, Karparov's chess rating is 2830 and x3dfritz's estimated rating is 2807. That difference is pretty minimal. The current software available on regular PC's such as chessmaster can beat 95% of chess players. It is only a matter of time before the combination of software and hardware improvements will provide a computer that can consistently beat a world chess champion. I am not sure when this will happen, but my best guess is in about 5 years. The software usually runs on supercomputers though, which seems almost like a unfair advantage. It will be really be special when an "off the shelf" computer can kick a world champions butt without a problem.
I have never had good luck with AMD products. I know some people really like them, but I rather wait for Intel to put out their version of the 64 bit processor. There isn't any big rush anyways, since there really isn't any software that can take advantage of the 64 bit yet.
When I worked at a support help desk I actually some techs suggest this to fix non working hard drives. The customer would be like "my hard drive stopped working, what should I do?" And techs would say to put in the dishwasher, just don't do the drying cycle (or you can melt the parts!). I would only suggest trying this if you about to throw the hard drive in the trash anyways.
I have seen articles that suggest this will actually encourage DSL carriers like Qwest to offer higher speeds. Qwest is currently testing 7mbps service in Denver and if marketing and technical tests are good they will expand it to other areas. DSL can't afford to sit on it's butt because it is currently losing customers to cable internet.
The thing is that if you do open up a monitor and somehow ignore the warning stickers you could get a nice shock and possible even be killed if you do not properly disapate the capacitor in the monitor. Beware, monitors are not something I would suggest trying to fix yourself.
Have you noticed what drug companys have done when a lucritive patent is about to expire? They just reformulate the drug a little bit and call it a different name. Like Prilosec, they came out with Nexium that is very simular. Or look at antidepressents liek Prozac that come out with a once a week pill. I find it hard to believe that Sony will just leave this market because if they do then they may as well leave the small TV sector as well. I find it more likely for them to patent a technology like their Wega product and just start marketing that. Look for more Sony Trinition Wega computer monitors in the future.
I would say it sounds like they need a better network, not necessarily another network. To me it is silly and unnecessary to build a whole other "backup" network. I would simply upgrade their current infrastructure. I would upgrade servers, get more bandwidth (multiple T1's or T3 if necessary), get better routers/switches, etc.
If I had this happen to me, I would definitely have to try and refrain from gloating a bit. My first reaction would be "you need my help!?, but you laid me off..." Then since I would be probably be needing money since I was on unemployment, I would offer my assistance at a rate of $50 an hour with a minumium of 4 hours and insist that it is "off the books" so Uncle Sam wouldn't take a cut.

I haven't heard any good rumors about Monsanto, they have all been bad. There is the rumor that they manufactor Nutrasweet and that product causes tons of illnesses. There is also the lovely terminator seed which is designed to make sure that farmers can't reuse their seed and are forced to buy new seeds from Monsanto every season. This news doesn't suprise me, this corporation really needs to reigned in!
A 3cm range is useless, as many people pointed out you might as well just plug the thing in with a range that low.
