    IRC is great if you want to talk to psuedo-random people[1] when you have nothing better to do. It is NOT so good for keeping in touch with your friends. You can theoretically do that with e-mail but you can't really have a *conversation* by e-mail.

    [1] Psuedo-random people: People who share a common interest, but are otherwise random.

    Only if they got you to pay for it, or show you ads or something. If airlines let everyone fly business class for free that would be great, wouldn't it? Everyone could access their service instead of only a few.

    I think that these companies should support third party applications or, atleast, ports to differnt operating systems. Anything that expands your marketshare, right?

    Using GAIM/Trillian/whatever makes you a part of their "market" how? The companies are in it for the money, not brownie points. With third party clients they don't get to show ads or anything. They gain absolutely nothing from third party clients connecting. Except maybe if they require licensing fees from third party clients, but that precludes free software.

    Because that would involve admitting to having a lot more linux installations than they could pass of as having to "study its weaknesses"... unless they were looking for a Beuwolf cluster of weaknesses

    Amen. I'm just recovering from a broken humerus (thats the bone between the shoulder and the elbow). There was nothing wrong with my wrist or elbow for figers, but once the cast came of the muscles were severly stiff. After 3 weeks of physical therapy things are still nowhere near normal.

    Bones heal just fine most of the time, but muscles stiffen and waste away like crazy. This was after 6 weeks of *partial* immobilization. Imagine what would happen if some limb were to be immobilised for longer.

    Its their network, their servers, their bandwidth. Why should they help support a rival operating system??? "Operating System preference" may be stuipid to you, but it IS their source of income, you know.

    Its completely unlike saying you can't use Hotmail without a Windows system- hotmail is supported by ads. When you use MSN with GAIM you don't see any ads or anything... you're a pure leach

    I'm as anti-MS as the next guy, but I'm with them on this one. You can't expect to get everything for free. Next you'll want ISPs to just let you plug in to their routers and access their network for free.

    While it stikns, I can;t understand how so many ppl out there are talking as if they have some inherent right to use Microsoft's servers. In fact I think they would be within their rights to sue people using unauthorised third-party clients for theft-of-service

    A lot of people are taking this chance to lash out at the DMCA. While I do agree that the DMCA is a Bat Thing, I don't see how this has anything to do with it.

    All this relates to is a bunch of stupid people relying on poorly designed automated bots to send legal threats without even looking at it first.

    Maybe its because it was flamebait. There was no material to debate there. Just a rabid dog post about how much you hate GTK. If you said you don't like it because it does (or doesn't) do x, y, z then there is scope for debate.

    I use Gnome every day and I don't know what the hell you're talking about. I suspect neigher do you. I've never had "menus lost behind a sea of windows".

    As for all the "ugliness".... Its themable. If you don't like what it looks like, choose another theme. duh.
