I visit my parents once a year in Loreto, Baja. There are 3 different internet cafes down there that I visit to check email, surf, etc. They ALL run Windows exclusively. None of the employees have even heard of Linux.

My Spanish is broken at best, so trying to talk to them about it just gets blank stares.

Ironic (and sad) that it looks like the homeland of one of the leading Linux developers (Miguel) is already addicted to MS.

Lilo lets you do whatever you want. EVERY distribution I've ever installed gives you the option to boot Linux by default or Windows by default.

Did you every ask anyone? Like in a newsgroup? Or maybe buy a distro (like Mandrake or SuSe) and then you can email them and ask the question. They would have easily told you how to fix your problem.

Just because you're a totally clueless MORON doesn't mean that there's a problem with Lilo or Linux. It's no harder to configure Lilo with multiple OS's than it is to configure NT Boot Loader.

And you don't have to recompile your kernel, you idiot, if you use a modern distro (like the 2 I mentioned above) that auto-detects your hardware and auto-installs the necessary modules.

Or, you're just a Troll, in which case you can go fuck yourself.

What an odd way to think.

Fiction (like 1984) allows us to take current reality and extend it to a ridiculous extreme, thus showing the kinds of things that are possible, not that things will necessarily turn out just so.

First, consider how many of the things in 1984 have come true, like the cameras in public places that identify potential criminals in some towns. Did you read about the guy that got detained and questioned for 2 hours because he looked like a certain criminal from another state? The police were pretty rough with him, at least verbally, then sent him on his way with barely an apology even though he was totally innocent.

Sure, we'll never have cameras in our homes that the government can use to watch us (I hope! Besides, who'd want to watch all us pasty-white out-of-shape nerds walk around in our underwear? :), but the above example comes frighteningly close.

Talk to someone in their 70's or 80's and see what their reaction to 1984 was. Most of them were pretty scared to realize that parts of it were actually possible, pretty terrifying, really. Then ask if they've talked to a current teenager who's read it. I did this, and the older person was appalled at how much less the effect of 1984 was on the younger person, because so much of it has come true.

Fiction can be a real cautionary tale to provide insight into the possibilities of our current paths. Not that we'd actually avoid them, though, given my above 1984 example. :)

Uhh, nice try. Pretty idealistic, you a college freshman? :)

There will always be psychos who try to take away our freedoms, so some of our citizens will always have to put themselves in harm's way to protect said freedoms. (yeah, a simplistic view, I know, but you get the point)

There will always be psychos in our own country who have no regard for human life, who feel it's ok to kill someone who invades your 'turf' or who looks at your old lady 'the wrong way', or who maybe broke into your house to steal something or rape said old lady, and you kill him in self-defense.

I could come up with some other examples, but that would take too fucking much energy.

Whether or not any of the games he developed were worth a sack of shit, every article about his departure from MS talks about the fact that he's leaving to go back to developing games.

As a matter of fact, he was already doing it, in his spare time, and he couldn't continue doing both things. He had to pick one or the other, so he left MS.

Other than Halo, what exclusive titles does XBox have that are extra cool? Munch's Oddysey? (sp?) Bloodwake? What a load of crap.

I could list enough great, exclusive games for PS2 to engage the Comment Size limit, but I'm too fucking lazy.

Here's the bottom line on the XBox: their original esimates (4.5 to 6 million sold by the end of the current MS fiscal year) were intentionally low so they could trumpet their success when they oversold them (go back and check the articles. Again, I'd provide links...) but they can't even live up to that. They now hope to sell 3.5 million, but I won't be surprised if they miss that, too, given the totally anemic sales in the last few weeks.

Their original shipment of 250,000 units to Japan hasn't even sold out yet. No wonder, given the intense feelings there against US products in general and MS in particular. Throw in the fact that the Japanese unit was scratching disks and DVD's and you have XBox basically dead in Japan.

In Europe, the story's not as bad, but still not very pretty.

When the XBox came out, I was really worried that MS was going to dominate yet another market, but thankfully, they've bungled it so badly that I wouldn't be surprised to see them cancel the thing within the next year.
