    I don't think he had to fight for it. There was never any plan to abandon the office space that Apple already has at the Infinite Loop campus, or any of the dozens of other buildings in the neighborhood.

    Nothing wrong with letting interns write code if they go through the same q/a process as anyone else. There were interns writing code in the last group I was in at Apple, and their code was fine. They get valuable experience, and Apple gets to try them out and see whether they should be hired when they graduate. Plenty of Apple's best software engineers started a summer interns.

  7. Operate robotic cargo flights for a few years and a couple million takeoffs and landings, and there will be a quantifiable record of their performance in all sorts of conditions.

    Pretty hard to argue with going robotic once the record shows computers consistently outperforming human pilots.

    What matters is what you can do

    Bingo.

    When you hire people to do a job, your fiduciary duty is to select the candidates who are best able to deliver the work. Race, sex, etc. are distractions, and hiring someone on these irrelevant criteria is a breach of that duty.

    The BSD appropriation was, and is, morally outrageous.

    Go fuck yourself. Apple has contributed as much as any organization to the maintenance and improvement of the BSD codebase. Just ask Jordan Hubbard. Not to mention giving away LLVM and LLDB, you ungrateful prick.

    They're keeping Infinite Loop and all the rest of the space they've already got in Cupertino. They have a lot of individual offices, and coders aren't even the majority of their staff.

    I can't write code in an open-plan office, because headphones are not an adequate substitute for office walls. If I ever went back to Apple, I'd just make it clear that I'd need a private office, or I'd be writing all of my code at home.

    It's also a lot easier to show an intern the door if they can't cut it. If they're employees, and you get one who's an incompetent, disruptive and self-absorbed asshole (like Ellen Pao), it can be all kinds trouble to get rid of them.
