Lazziez faire has been tried before and failed to bring abundance to the people as its supports claim it will,
Freedom promotes prosperity. Historical examples of this simple fact are too numerous to ignore.
Free market capitalism would work great if the private sector didn't manipulate the market to eradicate the very thing that makes capitalism work for the people: competition.
Who acts to limit competition, sparky? Right now, there's a move by interior decorators (seriously) to require state licensing to exclude new competitors from their line of work. When people don't want to compete, they turn to..... That's right, GOVERNMENT to outlaw their competition. So, you want government to have the power to do so? Great plan.
The conglomerates have enough power as it is,
This is true, but what you fail to recognize is that the power they have doesn't come from the market, it comes from greasing politicians.
bribing someone before they start stealing the land from under our houses.
Hey, tell me about how the government protects us from having our land taken away by evil corporations. Oh, wait. It turns out that government doesn't protect us from land-grabs, it actually does the land-grabbing under orders from those who will pay more in taxes than the rightful owners.
So, you're afraid of big businesses? Monopolies? Well, government is the ultimate monopoly, and it's not on your side.
The reality, though, was that there wasn't a big enough market for DOS ports to the Mac.
That's for sure.
Mac users expected a Mac interface.
That's mostly true, but the key is that Mac users demand a good UI. If you look at something like Maya, that breaks a lot of Mac UI principles but it's not a complete train wreck like Autocad always was.
The heads of Jonathan Schwartz and Scott McNealy need to roll for this.
Well, Schwartz should have been shown the door about four years ago, and McNealy should have take the fall for choosing him, but I'm not sure that this particular botched deal is why they should finally get the axe. They have a duty to get the best price they can, and it sounds like IBM really didn't want them after all.
No cough remedies better than placebo? I know from first-hand experience that expectorants can stop a cough. Also, honey is highly effective in clearing out my throat.
Any objective observer would give Obama very high marks for his first 74 days (as of this writing).
You're kidding, right?
Besides the parade of disastrous appointments, he's continued and worsened Bush's incompetent handling of the financial crisis. The house is on fire, and more gasoline won't help.
thousands of actual criminals commit much more heinous crimes and go unpunished
No kidding. I know of a group of criminals who just looted hundreds of billions of dollars and gave it to their buddies who run failed banks and manufacturing companies.
Mr. Lynd would not tell me why he raided our datacenter or what he was looking for.
Let's see... Where was that? Oh yes;
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Agent Lynd needs a remedial reading lesson. It's not merely illegal, it's unconstitutional to search without a warrant, and the warrant has to say what they're looking for.
Politicians love power, and what President would want to limit his own?
Exactly. That's why it's so tedious to hear people claim that everything will be just fine and dandy if you just give the vast accumulation of power in violation of our constitution to their team instead of the other team.
Power is like Uranium. Get too much of it in any one place, and Bad Things Happen.

I would call this havoc.
Your scale is a bit out of whack. Havoc is an event like hurricane Katrina, not an event like 911 being out of commission for a day.
-jcr
Lazziez faire doesn't work in reality.
Oh, for christ's sake...
Companies want to profit and destroy the competition and lock in their customers.
What do you think these eeevil companies use to attack their competition? Hint: it starts with a "g", and ends with "overnment".
-jcr
I wouldn't really call this havoc. More like inconvenience for a lot of people for about a day.
-jcr
You're very lucky that there were smarter people than you around to keep your ancestors from freezing in the dark.

Wonderful quote.
Thanks. You can credit it to Hugh Daniel.

every fucking decision we make is purely for profit
You say that like it's a bad thing.
Just read up on genetically modified corn and all the possible health implications/I.
Health implications like not starving to death. Go cry, emo kid.

The politicians responsible should have been tried for treason, or shot by the citizens and replaced by better men.
Sadly, we don't always live up to our principles.

the best way to make sure that we don't end up in another Depression is for people to spend money.
Broken Window Fallacy. Google it.

They were offering an insane premium on the price.
Maybe they figured that out, and that's why they're not bidding for Sun anymore.

Sub-Saharan Africa has problems that money can't fix.
I don't know about that. What's it cost to get a dictator killed these days?
-jcr
No cough remedies better than placebo? I know from first-hand experience that expectorants can stop a cough. Also, honey is highly effective in clearing out my throat.

I *did* vote for Obama. (Mainly because the opposition appeared worse.)
If you keep voting for the lesser of two evils, you still get an evil.
-jcr
If you're going to try to rationalize locking people up without charges, then you and I have no basis for further discussion. FDR was a tyrant.

But I also find somewhat odd and even disturbing that they can raid you and not tell you why?
Think that's bad? We had a president back in the 1940s who locked up thousands of innocent people without charges just for having Japanese ancestors.
-jcr

Oh, didn't you hear? Obama was the one who promised to attack Pakistan.
-jcr
Yeah, he's in office for a little while and everything should have magically changed.
Nothing magic about issuing an executive order to countermand previous executive orders.
But hey, why should I worry? He called off the raids on medical marijuana dispensaries for a whole WEEK!
