    NS stands for Next/Sun.

    Well, that depends on who you ask. NeXT never made any official statement on what the "NS" prefix stands for, and I remember being told that it stood for "NeXT/Sun", "NextStep", and "Neat Stuff" by different people.

    The Supreme Court had long ago ruled that stop-and-frisks were constitutionally permissible under certain conditions,

    The court fucked up on this, because they didn't limit it those conditions that the fourth amendment permits.

    When an organization commits millions of counts of civil rights violations, being told to stop is NOT enough. At the very least, the mayor, the police chief, and the top three or four layers of NYPD management should be behind bars for this. Any patrolman who took part should be dismissed and banned from any position of public trust in the future.

    At the risk of damning myself with faint praise, I have far more knowledge of history than you do, since your view of the period is clouded with propaganda.

    Here's the thing you need to understand: war production is not wealth. It is destruction. It is waste.

    Hoover turned the crash of '29 into the great depression. Roosevelt made it persist throughout his regime. The depression ended in 1946, when about a million men were released from military service, federal spending was cut by about 2/3, and the productive capacity that had been diverted to war material was given back to civilian uses.

    It's not necessarily a bad investment, if it can be arbitraged. If I buy a futures contract for a couple megawatt-hours a year before a heat wave, I could very well make a tidy profit.

    So what would Apple get in turn for buying Intel? Cheaper pricing?

    More like, by adopting Intel's process technology they could save 20% or more of the power used by all of their mobile devices, not to mention the billions of dollars they contribute to Intel's profit margin currently. If Apple owned Intel, they could even resume manufacturing Flash RAM in-house.

    We didn't have a Jerry Falwell contingent in my school. The religious kids tended to be mainstream Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, etc. There wasn't much cocaine use, but there was a group of druggies who mostly smoked pot, and would also use cocaine or LSD when available.
