If you are fixated on going hybrid with an SUV, why not buy a brand new hybrid Highlander or Lexus? You'll spend as much and get the same marginal gas mileage increase, but you'll also get that new-car smell.
Or you could look at the Ford Escape Hybrid and enjoy upwards of 50% fuel savings in a brand-new 4x2 or 4x4 small SUV.
To put things into perspective; the Escape Hybrid has $0 fuel tax, whereas the Highlander carries a $75 tax. Why? The Highlander uses a large 6 cylinder engine and, as you said, only experiences marginal fuel economy improvements.
The Lexus is a nice SUV - but it comes at a Lexus price. A person driving a 12 year old Jeep Cherokee isn't likely to run to a dealer and drop $62,200 CDN (base MSRP) on a new SUV. Even the Highlander comes in at $44,205 while the Escape Hybrid starts at a reasonable $33,495.
The Escape Hybrid uses an Atkinson Cycle variant of their popular 2.3L Duratec engine which, in and of itself is a highly efficient, near zero emission engine. Combined with a 70KW electric motor it produces the same power as the V6 Escape.
The One Tank Challenge demonstrated that on a 62L gas tank it's possible to drive Toronto city traffic for 972 KMs getting better than 5.9L/100KM (or roughly 50MPG).
But now a days, plenty of companies make all in ones that are really nice pieces of equipment.... I'd specifically mention HP & Canon in this category myself... the laser ones anyway, no experience with the inkjet ones.
Prior to its decision to feed 12 sheets of paper at a time, I went through driver hell with Win'98 ("No longer supported!"), Win2k ("You can't use this on a print server!"), and finally WinXP with a Canon Multipass.
Their answer? Over and over again; "We out-source our driver programming to Japan. We have no control. No, we can't accept bug reports. Upgrade to WinXP and your problems will go away." The problem? After upgrading to Win2k (the time spent doing so with all the applications and devices that had to cooperate - accounting/tax software et al. being a larger factor than the cost) they tell me to upgrade to WinXP? I'm sorry, just because I'm using Win2k Professional doesn't mean I'm serving the printer to the entire network - but I WOULD like more than one local user account to be able to print to the damn thing. The solution? "Set every user as 'Administrator' and your problem will go away." Then what's the point of having multiple user accounts?!?
I wouldn't give you a thanks for a skidload of multi-function devices, thankyouverymuch.
Because it's so hard to wait until you are done browsing to do the update. One MUST ALWAYS update while they have a dozen tabs open.
Oh, what a sad day for my mod points to expire!
I was just thinking the same thing myself. Why complicate things? When you update, just close the dang browser and let it replace all its files without worrying about load/lock status. KISS, people! Keep It Simple, Stupid!
Honestly; who's so busy that they need to update their software while in the middle of a dozen tasks? Slashdot is cool and all, but c'mon, take a break from commenting for 3 minutes to update your browser. Geesh.:P
No, but I've worked in the bar and restaurant industry for years. I love it when econ grads come in and try to "fix" what's wrong with a store. Typically they throw around a lot of numbers and in the end customers and staff alike are less happy.
I'm not in the restaurant business so I might be missing something very important.. but if I ran a restaurant one of the most important points in my business plan would be to pay my waiters / waitresses more than minimum wage.. even though the law allows me to pay them less. I would have no trouble finding decent help... and my customers would be happier because my employees are happier.
Actually, it would have the opposite effect. Your staff would be fat and happy so there's no incentive to excel at customer service. Good wait staff can receive upwards of $100-200 in tipout per night in a blue collar restaurant/bar. That's why they earn less than minimum wage - the cheque is often less then their tips. Holidays can see good bar staff earn $200-500 apiece in a single night.
Wait staff in upscale restaurants are only paid as a matter of formality. Serving one good party in a night can garner over $200.
Now in a typical tip-out you have to consider the dishwashers and cooks, but that's only a small percentage.
Escalation was necessary. To what point, I don't know, but even if pressing charges against them is unreasonable, hey, these administrators had 100 kids refusing to obey the rules after repeated offenses and punishments. I think they're allowed a little mistake in their desparation.
A little mistake is suspending a few too many students. Federal charges is more than a little mistake.
I was a network administrator at a high school with 400+ workstations. Were you? Are you basing any of your statements out of experience, or knee-jerk fear?
For the record, I never once invoked law enforcement officials for internal student problems, and because of strategic security improvements and better staff education and policing of students, incidents dropped to fewer than 1/month.
To say that "either you're and adult or not" is a falsehood. It would be much more true to say that you can't judge a person's maturity by his age (and that's not true either).
So which are you saying, that you can judge maturity based on physical age, or that you can not? If so, at what age does a person become mature, and how is it that during the night preceeding that birthday they develop a heightened sense of right and wrong?
The oft agreed-upon "age of majority" at 18 years is considered so because by that point in life a person has had 18 years' worth of life experience which should help shape their future decisions in a more responsible mannar. However, not everybody experiences the same life or maintains the same outlook. There are, for example, many 40 year olds I wouldn't trust to care after a dog letalone a child or high speed automobile. There are also, however, many 15 year olds who care for their household.
A combination of experience, neccesity, a small degree of intelligence (rational thought) and upbringing all combine to give a person their overall level of maturity and will dictate how they will behave in particular situations. It is generally accepted that 16 is "too young" and 20 is "too late" to give people particular responsibilities so a median was chosen at 18. That, however, is not a magical number, and the system is entirely too far from perfection.
Now, to state that by the age of 15, well below the widely accepted age of majority, children are to be considered fully responsible for their own actions is ludicrous. This is a great opportunity to show these children how and why their actions are wrong and to explore their budding talents as IT staffers, not to put a mark on their records that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
When I first read about this case, I thought the school was justified. When I found out that the passwords were taped to the machines, I changed my mind. When I found out that later, there was indeed "hacking", I changed my mind again. The students broke the law--the very same law that protects you from having to worry about unauthorized computer access.
JUSTIFIED? How in the world could this ever be considered REMOTELY justified? They tinkered with the computers that were supplied to them. They entered a password that was taped to the back of the computer. A reasonable penalty would be to revoke their computer access, take back the computers, re-image and re-assign them. But a FELONY OFFENSE? Come on! Be reasonable! Did you get charged with criminal trespass when you snuck into the janitor's closet or the staff washroom, or did they give you detention/suspension and make you clean part of the school as penance?
Make no mistake; there is no part of this case that is remotely reasonable. This has the potential to ruin the lives of these students before they're ever introduced to the real world. Who wants to graduate high school with a felony conviction on their records? This will DESTROY their chances of ever entering the field of IT, or any field that requires a level of security clearance.
This case is, plain and simple, an outrage. When you treat your society's children like terrorists and criminals they will act the part.
Except this is England, where the average salary is under $40,000,
Pounds, US dollars or CDN dollars? My example was in CDN currency.
you are not going to get a home for $600/month unless its subsidised.
What type of home, for how many people, and how many incomes? Keeping in mind if you have 2*$40k incomes and are paying $1200/month each person is only paying $600. Likewise in a $600/month 'flat' you'd be paying $300 apiece.
Too many people in our (North American / Brittish) culture are under the impression that 2 people somehow require a 3 bedroom, 2 storey house when they could get by just as well in a 1 bedroom appartment. I know too many people facing bankruptcy because they over-extend themselves on their housing budget only to lose everything some months later.
Also, people seem to be far to passive about home buying. When they consider themselves ready to buy a house they contact a real estate agent and begin their search. A house is the biggest thing you're likely to purchase in your life - don't you think it deserves a bit more consideration than narrowing it down to 1-2 choices? Why not wait until the housing market becomes soft and prices go down? So you'll get a higher rate on your mortgage, but with savings and open loans you can always negate the higher interest and re-negotiate it a few years down the road. Spending an extra $20-90k on a house offsets almost any increase in rates.
Currently I rent. I'm saving money for as long as it takes until the market is in a suitable condition to purchase. I intend to put upwards of 20% down and save enough for my first years' mortgage payments. I don't intend to get caught in the $900B personal debt that my fellow north americans have themselves stuck in at the moment, nor do I intend to declare bankruptcy any time in my life. Silliness.
With my rant over with, if you take a good hard look at your finances I'm sure you can find ways to change your lifestyle to ensure that you've always got money in the bank. One of the biggest causes of stress is finances. Learn to live within your means and eliminate that stress level and you'll find more success in your career and your personal life.
I'm guessing you are either in high school or college and don't realize just how long it really takes to make $120,000.
Firstly, those statistics are based on a spectrum that includes low to middle class countries and middle-class residents therein.
Secondly, in North America, the UK, Europe, etc. the amount of disposable income (money remaining after the necessities of life) is largely dependant on the things you choose to spend your money on. Even the cost of housing will dictate your disposable assets. Do you need that $1200/month appartment, or would $600/month be suitable to your needs? Do you live on your own, with a significant other, one or more roommates, family members, or friends? What kind of car do you drive? Cell phone, high speed Internet, cable/satellite television, etc. are all bills that add up to less disposable cash at the end of the month.
I personally know a millionaire who drives a 1988 Ford pickup. I'm surprised teh thing still runs. But based on his accepted style of living, more than 50% of his annual income is 'disposable' (and subsequently invested).
If you're able to contain your consumeristic instincts you can bank $120k (plus interest) in 4 years on a modest $60k/yr salary.
Great, sign me up! Wait, what? Rural areas don't get cable, you have to use satellite for the TV channels? What about DSL...no?
My sister and her family live in a rural area of Ontario (farming town) and they've had cable since they moved in, high speed cable Internet access, DSL for a couple years, and their house and land cost a small fraction of what a smaller house costs where I live.
I could get a 3 bedroom house out there on 2 acres of land for under $70k CDN. Out here that wouldn't even buy me a 3 bedroom townhouse on a postage stamp of grass.
How about all of the 18-24 year old girls who are too damn young to know any better or to think of the long-term consequences of their actions?
How about all the 18-24 year old girls who are paying their way through school or supporting a family?
BTW - age 18 is considered in Canada (and much of the United States) as "age of majority". By that age, people are considered mature enough to vote to change the future of our nation, smoke cigarettes, drive any form of motor vehicle, own property, enter into legal contracts, hold full-time careers, etc. Why then are they not old enough to decide how, when and where to use their own bodies?
BTW2 - what are the consequences? To have people such as yourself and others look down on them for their career choice?
A friend of mine was a stripper (no sexual favours, just dancing) who paid her way through college, bought a car then replaced it some years later and completely supported her husband while he attended university. She now works full-time (with her clothes on) as does he, and he makes more than enough money to support them both comfortably due to his credentials.
Does she hide the fact that she stripped? Hell no. Does she feel exploited? Yep. She feels that she exploited dozens of men every night who turned over 10, 20 or even several hundred dollars to be in her company.
My first traumatic computer injury was in about...
My most memorable (other than the few cuts, scrapes and bruises) was when a computer pissed me off so I stomped on it. The case being so thick (steel I think) it wouldn't budge. So I, wearing my steel toes, hoofed it across the room. I think I broke or atleast dislocated three toes doing that. What did the computer have to show for it? A small black mark about the size of a quarter.

In fact, if I am in a hurry I intentionally drive in the "fast lane" at the exact speed limit. Why? Because it is the fasted speed at which I am legally allowed to travel and those who wish to pass are in violation of the law. If they wish to speed they will have to wait until they can pass me on the right.
I'm sorry I responded to you before. I hadn't realized that you are an ignorant, inconsiderate asshole and a troll.
I hope you lose your drivers license and your posting privileges for the good of all those around you.
Too slow? Nope. not an issue. Like I said, I am driving 5 to 10 miles under the speed limit. The minimum speed is clearly posted - it is 20 under the speed limit.
And if traffic is moving at 10 over the limit you could still be fined for "too slow for conditions" and/or cause a collision.
I remember that, My dad didn't understand (most people were even less comp savy than today) and insisted on turning off the answering machine, since the virus could get to you through the telephone lines and he didn't want it to get infected.
I had a customer purchase a dust cover to ward off the airborne variety of computer viruses.
It does, however, explain the phrases like 'blind rage'.
Personally, I don't think it "explains" much of anything. I had to run through all three examples before I even figured out which image I should be looking for. By the time they started they were done. Yes, the gory image stood out - but it was BRIGHT RED!!! All the other images appeared in more neutral tones and had more even mixes of colour and texture spread throughout. By the time I found out what image I was looking for, it was only up long enough for me to figure out what colour it was and focus in on it. I still saw the image (and all those preceeding and following it) so I didn't go 'temporarily blind' by any means, I just couldn't process images flying past my eyes for 100ms apiece. I couldn't describe to you what was depicted in any of the images, quite frankly.
(By the way - which word(s) did you notice first as you scrolled upon my post? Why is that? Is it because you were temporarily blinded by the preceeding gory/erotic image?)
I have to be halfway honest when they ask me if IE is better on Win XP SP2 + hotfixes than it was on their old computer. It is, and I don't think that's debatable (yes, it is far from perfect but better than XP plain or 2k SP1).
Sure, a current patchlevel is better than a vanilla install but it's still far, far from perfect and they'll still run into problems. If running FireFox can and will prevent them from seeing the spyware in the first place they're reducing their overall dependance on you. Even if you explain it that way (in that they'll still require your clean-up services down the road for the same problems) you'll look like a hero for trying to save them long-term money, and it'll be easier to bill them later when you have to remove the same cruft from their network.
It's not so much "I told you so" as "I warned you in a professional mannar":)
Those were great days. My BBS never got that large - the most calls it ever handled in one day was 20 and I only had one line. I ran it off of a 286 with a 40mb hard drive for a while and later moved it to a 486 with a 4-disc CD tower. I learned tons about batch files and modem initialization strings in those days!
My BBS struggled similarly. I started by downloading a BBS software package (Remote Access, IIRC) on my 1200BPS modem on my XT (with a 20MB hard drive). When I finally got a used 286 w/ 40MB drive and paralell linked them (the XT became my fileserver) I was in heaven. I think I topped out at around 30-40 calls/day. My main attraction was a hugely popular LORD game. That game was so popular in my area I received e-mails about it for years after my BBS shut down.
The 386 w/ 80MB drive and upgraded 33.6 modem was like greased lightening. Strange to consider that my current desktop machine outpowers all my first 8 PCs combined in every respect (processor, memory, video, storage, optical media, etc.)
You are all forgetting the best game of them all Barren Realms Elite.
Hear hear! I had macros tuned so efficiently I could play 2xBRE (1 local, 1 IBBS) on a dozen different BBSs in under an hour on a 1200BPS modem. I and a group of 2-3 friends used to converge on certain BBSs to create our own undefeatable empire. There's nothing like the satisfaction of bringing down a well established BBS with teamwork and a well executed plan of attack.
I take this is a sarcastic jibe meaning that you don't think it's such a huge deal... so why bother publishing it? Debating tenths of a percent of market share seems pointless regardless of whether it's up or down. By publishing the story it would just seem you're just contributing to the hype.
Editorial fairness, perhaps? When the market share goes up by 0.64% everyone decries the editors for not publishing the other side of the coin. When they publish the bad news about our beloved products we should ask ourselves (and our development communities) "Why?" rather than "Who cares?"
Cheaper, perhaps, but CLEANER?!?
For the record, he's interested in an SUV because he's out in the country. A TDI isn't exactly SUV-esque.

Even if you explain it that way (in that they'll still require your clean-up services down the road for the same problems) you'll look like a hero for trying to save them long-term money, and it'll be easier to bill them later when you have to remove the same cruft from their network.
It's not so much "I told you so" as "I warned you in a professional mannar" :)
The best thing about Bluewave was not supporting Hector Santos...

Editorial fairness, perhaps? When the market share goes up by 0.64% everyone decries the editors for not publishing the other side of the coin. When they publish the bad news about our beloved products we should ask ourselves (and our development communities) "Why?" rather than "Who cares?"
