We're a long way off from that utopia. For a long, long time we'll have the need for a pentaband dual mode chipset for 2G voice and 3G data fallback. Heck almost nobody has yet rolled out VoLTE and even when they do it has major problems with fallback, and the alternative VoLGA was killed off earlier this year by Deutschetelecom, the only sane people in the industry who wanted a standard that could actually be implemented in the real world.
It has WiMax coverage now? I live in one of the pilot markets and several years later I still can't get 4g signal any of the places where I spend 90% of my time (work, restaurants around work (~8 mile radius from work), and home). If it wasn't for the fact that 4G is a required billing item with the Shift I would have dropped it long ago.
There are plenty of lenders that won't resell your mortgage, they just tend to have higher rates and higher credit standards. I chose to go through a broker both on my purchase and refinance because I could get ~1/4% better rates through them even though I knew they wouldn't be servicing my mortgage (Wells Fargo picked mine up both times and I've had zero problem with their monthly ACH transactions though they can't seem to figure out the right rate for my escrow this time around).
Ok, boss 429 of which there were only 1,000 over 3 model years ending in 1970 (aka hottest of the era): 0-to-60 of 6.8 seconds and quarter mile pass of 14-seconds flat at 103mph. Bigger engine does not mean faster car unless you take the block and do all sorts of things that take the already abysmal life and lower it to rebuild every couple runs.
Yep, that's why when we designed our new HQ building we went all electric. Today our local power source is quite dirty, but since we are also involved in one of the largest commercial solar installations in the world we know that the future grid is likely to be much cleaner than even natural gas boilers. However for cars biodiesel holds a significant promise, carbon neutral with significantly more energy density than even the most ambitious lab tech batteries.
1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351 0-60 mph 5.7 Quarter mile 13.6
2010 Ford Taurus SHO 0-60 mph 5.2 Quarter mile 13.6
1972 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 0-60 mph 7.4 Quarter mile 15.3
2007 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 0-60 mph 7.3 Quarter Mile 15.4
2011 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ (3.6L) 0-60 mph 6.3
The OP's point stands, the sporty version of a modern family car is the equal of most 1970's muscle cars (in factory trim) in the quarter mile and will completely crush it in just about every other metric you care to measure.
All of those metrics would have been met by the Rutan Voyager in 1984. They flew 26,366 miles on 1080 gallons of fuel and flew at an average speed of 116mph.
Facebook and their omnipresent Like buttons is the largest source of intrusive monitoring on the web. I highly recommend the antisocial subscription for adblock, it's not only reduced the amount of information leaking to google and facebook but it's also improved average page load times by about 40-50% (guestimation).
If you're worried about the social buttons I would suggest looking at the antisocial subscription list. One warning though I also had to add facebook.com to my block list as some pages kept reloading some php from facebook servers every few seconds once I subscribed.
Dude we know for a fact that all the Tier-1 traffic in the US already gets repeated to the NSA, why would they need a peek? Now the FBI might want a look, but for them to be able to do anything with it they need a warrant (even if it is a expost facto FISA warrant).
Dude there was uproar about the HPV vaccine before it was even available. All the idiots saying "my 12 year old isn't going to turn into a slut so there's no need for her to get the vaccine". The reality of the situation is they all *should* have it as it's an easy way to reduce their chances of getting a life threating illness, we require all children to get the chickenpox vaccine and the incidence of chickenpox being life threating is miniscule.
First consumer ATSC card that I know of: 2006 (Hauppauge HVR-950 though that was USB, most HTPC's would have used the HVR-1600 which didn't launch till 2007).
Actually the Herpes virus (varicella zoster) that causes chicken pox does have recurrence in many people, it's what causes shingles. For those people all they can do is help the symptoms as well (though the chicken pox vaccine will now eliminates symptoms for some significant percentage of those so affected). Now that the Valtrex patent has expired (2008) I'm sure there's some incentive to create a vaccine (though getting it used in the general population is going to be difficult, see all the ignorant uproar over the HPV vaccine).
Of course tv has changed since the PII came out, there was no HD back then. NTSC encoded as MPEG2 is simple, playing back 1080p30 content using one of the modern codecs is much, much more difficult, especially if you don't have hardware acceleration (which would be a big reason to add an NVidia card to an older system).
There are a lot of Core2 era Xeon servers with PCI/PCI-X slots, including a lot of pedestal servers which are designed to be used in an office environment. We use HP ML series for most of our remote offices where we don't have room for a dedicated rack. The biggest obstacle to using one as a workstation (other than the large size) is the fact that you generally can't just slap a new SATA drive in there, you need a carrier and on many systems the RAID card will only recognize certain drives.

HSPA+ offers download up to 14.4Mbps, way faster than most initial 3G tech and over twice as fast a EVDO revB.

-1 Wrong would be the one I most want, when someone is factually wrong there isn't a good moderation for that except for the catchall overrated.
Ars does, well actually you can continue to edit after there is a further reply but they add a forum stamp on your post which says "edited on "
Since that kind of bias has been part of slashdot since before it WAS slashdot I think it's you that is out of place =)
Yep, see m.fark.com for a great mobile layout.
Uh, IBM's suit was stayed pending the outcome of the Novell suit given the fact that if SCO lost they would have no grounds to sue IBM.
Yes but the PIN should be analogous to a lock and so they would need a warrant to use the device.

Hard to encrypt tape?!? Every LTO5 and most LTO4 drives support hardware AES encryption!
Team Fortress was the absolute bomb. The other great Q1 mod was Painkeep
Damn it, nevermind I'm an idiot, 26mpg is obviously less than 200.
