    Actually T-Mobile LIKES VoIP, check out their Hotspot@Home program. In fact T-Mobile's program is better than any third party VoIP setup because you use your existing handset and number.

    Actually the numbering comes from the NT line, there was NT 3,NT 3.5,NT 4, Windows 2000(5.0), XP(5.1), 2003(5.2), Vista/2008(6.0).

    Depends on your provider, AT&T will do BGP between sites for us with just a /26 though I believe you do need a full C to get an ASN to do BGP between providers.

    They are probably just not open to YOU, most of us sane people use ACL's to limit who can talk to equipment. Just because it's not open to the public doesn't mean it doesn't need to be uniquely identified on the routable internet.

    Yeah most likely it will result in degraded performance and/or loss of functionality, just like the initial 'fix' for the bad mirror was to avoid using the most sensitive sensors. In a way it's very fortunate that this part broke before the service mission since now they know they will need to fly the ground spare and replace it along with the other scheduled repairs.

    The tip I was told by a headhunter years ago is to expect to be out of work 1 month for every $10K in salary if the economy is bad (and it's still true, especially so if you adjust for inflation, it was in 1995 dollars originally). So you better have enough in liquid assets to cover that many months without a wage if you don't want to be slinging burgers while you look.

    20% is probably low for technical violation since the US tax code is the most complex instruction manual ever invented by man. Also those violation and fraud totals are probably equivalent to the monthly numbers that cross from Mexico and most of the H1B's have at least some marketable skill beyond manual labor.

    If you get a green card and then become a naturalized citizen do the quarters worked under the H1B program count towards SS benefits?

    The majority of the H-1B's that I've worked with have been bright, intelligent, and talented individuals with skillsets not easily available in my market (Midwest). IE exactly the kind of folks the visa's are supposed to go to. I guess I'm lucky to have worked in companies that didn't suck and weren't IT sweatshops. Most of the people I have worked with I would nominate for a green card given the chance (and several have actually been sponsored on my recommendation). It's the people that come over on the H1B program that we most need to encourage to immigrate, they are smart people who will raise the standard of living in the US. The reality is that for the programmer type jobs that so many rail against the employer will outsource the project if they can't find or import enough talent at the right price to complete the project on time and on budget.

    In fact your raid leader probably shouldn't be a tank or healer, they have too much to do at the tactical level to be effective at the strategic level (generally).

    I don't think any component manufacturer certifies their stuff running in free air, I would think you would get a lot of EMI out of a system like this that would interfere with anything around it.

    Actually it was live reporting that was credited in saving several lives at Case Western a few years back, some students were listening to a live broadcast and moving around the building to avoid the attacker.

    Probably more for the 'technology' checkbox on the standard questionnaire for the school rankings publications. I know one school near me put in fiber to the desktop just so they could rank higher in that column and thus putting them in the top 10 nationally.

    My biggest problems with flash are CPU usage and stability. The fact that it's not available for anything but x86 is another, albeit secondary concern (mostly around mobile players).

    Unless your the reigning king of profitable game franchises (Blizzard) in which case you do just release it when it's ready. WoW for instance was released late in the holiday schedule (11/23), BC was released in January and Diablo 2 was released in June.

    We can expect an open source Silverlight viewer? If so and MS has agreed not to enforce any patents on the technology then I see little reason for it to not overtake flash. Flash sucks, a lot. The sooner we have another cross platform app for doing online animations and movies the better.

    I love firebug for writing greasemonkey scripts, much easier to browse the DOM elements graphically then to try to pull apart the HTML/CSS =)

    Sorry but the manufacturers can and do let it happen. The original iPod firmware for EU countries has a volume limiter built in because the EU mandates it, and AAPL wants to sell music players in the EU so they comply with the law. (I'm not sure if current players do since I haven't gotten into the nitty gritty of iPod firmware since I had my Gen 1.

    Why not use XPe stations with IE and flash and publish those sites as local resources? They cost about the same as other thinterms and only use slightly more power, I find it's a good tradeoff between functionality and TCO.

    You couldn't be more wrong, Citrix ICA works on dialup with 300+ms ping and 19kbit/s bandwidth. It even works over satellite for some definition of 'works'. About the only thing it doesn't handle well is large amounts of packet loss and huge print jobs on bandwidth starved connections (though it's better than anything else here since it uses raw print files which are as small as you can get and still have the formatted output).

    Ideally anyone in the government who has the power to affect my life would be elected. The FCC might be a lot more responsive to the citizenry (vs the corporations) if they were directly elected.

    Except SMS uses space in the control channel which is very low bandwidth (ok, modern equipment generally uses 2.5/3G first but it will fall back to the subchannel if needed).

    Yes, Verizon will just ban any MTA that sends them more than n messages per month where n is small (say a few thousand).
