    Well since all the GHz measurements from AMD are vs an equivilant performance Intel chip, and now that reference is gone, why not use the industry standard benchmark. Name chips based on the SpecIntBase score and be done with it!

    Why? Hydrogen is just an energy transport mechanism, not a source of energy. You have to solve the problem of creating a non-polluting energy source before you worry about how best to transport it.

    A friend of mine did something along those lines. He has a PC with GPS in his trunk hooked up to an LCD up front, when he gets near home some scripts fire up the WiFi card, it then connects and authenticates with his home server. The two PC's sync up and then the trunk PC shuts itself down so as not to kill the battery.

    Your opinion on wireless doesn't mean a whole lot then. Centrino's wireless PHY is crap, no one would be using it except Intel only allows companies to use the Centrino brand name (and use Intel marketing dollars) if they include the whole setup. Don't get me wrong, I love the Pentium M, just don't like the fact that Intel is pushing a substandard part on people. Not only that but they are still 9 months away from an A/B/G part, something everyone else has had for some time now.

    Pentium M desktop isn't available, only laptop processors at this point. If you could buy individual Pentium M's they wouldn't be cheap "the slowest Pentium M, a 1.3GHz chip, costs $209 with 1M byte of cache.. That's from Infoworld in January, not sure if there has been a price drop on them yet.

    Hollywood hasn't come up with more than a handfull of new ideas in the last three decades and yet the studios are FAR from dead. The aging of the origional gamers is a GOOD thing for the game publishers because it means they have more disposable income, and the fact that they have less free time means that they will be less likely to notice the lack of origional content.

    Mormon's are the only ones to do geneology. Thanks to some Scottish monk's I can trace one branch of my maternal family tree all the way back to a second century AD Roman general stationed in a garison behind Hadrians wall. I also know most of my paternal tree back eight generations.

    Not sure but at this point in time the only people who have to worry are the ones making them in labs, and let me tell you the stuff used in most processes is a LOT more dangerous than casual exposure to asbestos. Benzene isolation was the fist method used to extract Buckminsterfullerenes for example, Benzene will kill you a lot faster than asbestos =)

    Autodetect of PCI devices has been working for ages, USB works fairly well as does Firewire. The best robust printing solution I have ever seen (Cisco Enterprise Print System) is based on Linux and open source projects. Linux also supports ACL's so if you really need em go ahead and use em. Any other questions?

    OWA from Exchange 2003 works wonderfully with Mozilla 1.6 despite what MS claims. The only feature that doesn't seem to work correctly is reminder notifications, I think they coded that as an optional ActiveX plugin or something. Also IE's lack of features can be easily worked around by downloading one of the hundreds of wrapper programs like Crazybrowser.

    Mono has been self sustaining for over a year so my bet is that like most things in computers .NET started it's life built in a C/C++ environment until the tools were mature enough to compile themselves.

    No, robotics only displaces manual labor, not skilled positions. Instead of spending a large amount of money on the framing of the house people will move more towards expensive furnishings and spending money on interior design consultants. Some people will go with a basic, bare house but many will continue to spend near what they do currently only better furnished and astetically pleasing.

    Do NOT use non-sealed batteries in an indoor UPS setting, good way to kill yourself. Hydrogen Sulfide gas which is given off as the batteries are charged is REALLY nasty stuff.

    NT 5.2 will be called XP Reloaded and it is coming out due to further slippage in the Longhorn ship date. On the server side they will probably come out with a couple of service packs for Server 2003 and then build an edition on top of Longhorn after it's been debugged by the masses.

    Fingerprints can be (and are) encoded as a couple of vectors, voiceprints are similar. DNA profiles only need to record the magnitude of around a dozen markers to accurate to the person, mugshots are the only thing on your list which would require a lot of storage, and you don't need those for the searching part of the DB, just have them stored in a blob with a key from the main record pointing to it. Don't bring up facial recognition, it doesn't work, false positives are through the roof and false negatives are too high to trust.

    More like for the engineering of designing the system. Having an ultra niche product means that R&D costs have to be spread over a very small number of units.

    Gas turbine engines better be able to go more than 2-3 days. Most places that use em have fuel supplies of at least a week on-site with contracts to get refueled every couple days. Hell we ran for over 48 hours on our traditional diesel (and only used about 2/3'rds of its 500 gallon tank for a medium sized computer room in summer).

    SO true, by the time the origional microdrive was allowed to drop in price solid state storage was already cheaper, using 1/3rd the power, and writing faster, not to mention being infinitly more shock resistant!

    Wow, spoken like someone who doesn't have kids. Between my wife and I we watch our son 90+% of the time but there are times when we are both working where we need a baby sitter, or we want to go out together to enjoy a little bit of "us" time without our son. Luckily for us we live within ~10 miles of both sets of grandparents and so finding a reliable, trustworthy babysitter isn't a problem but I can definitly sympathise with people who don't have the luxury.

    It will also make it easier for people feeling uneasy to check up on their potential dates. Like the lady who not so long ago found the FBI top ten guy in Europe because she did a little investigating before going on the date.

    Actually it is explicitly NOT allowed by the HTTP URL RFC but the general URL RFC which supercedes that one says it is an optional but not recommended field for HTTP.

    Hell their report is undoubtadly low. Looking at internet traffic ratings the other day 5 of the top 20 sites were spyware related and there were several more in the top 50.
