Really, what better way to keep DRM mechanisms out of the mainstream market than the strangeholds of patents combined with the intense (and well-justified, one might add) mistrust against Microsoft?

They'd have to give those things away in order to get widespread adoption.

DRM is doomed. The main-selling point of PCs are their versatility. Take this away and you got nothing but a glorified calculator. Establish laws protecting DRM and you give competing countries a huge advantage. The USA, a country which often refuses to regulate its industries citing international competitive reasons certainly can't cripple itself in such a stupid manner.

Maybe the bad guys will now lose for a change.

Not necessarily ... any forum / board which let's you use customized HTML-signatures can be used if you can embed code which then points to a prepared setup. And as far as I know, PHP should support sending hand-crafted HTTP-headers... PHP is the most popular Hypertext-preprocessor. Hrmmm....

SMAC absolutely rocks, but Civ III? It just doesn't feel as "special" as the first two or Alpha... I'm heavily miffed b/c of lack of multiplayer and that the graphics don't reflect modern times. AI feels clunky, in SMAC they really feel as if they have character when you interact with the computer players, but it's just not there in Civ III... sad, really.

I just relocated from the US to the UK and have yet to encounter a store where they'd take PC software back. Both "Games" and EB in Meadowhall, Sheffield don't. So there. I don't claim to know it all, but so far that's what I've seen.

  10. Military Application on Laser for Satellite to Satellite Communications · · Score: 1

Now that's actually more scary than anything else. If a civil institution is capable of laser-linking satellites, I'd say it's pretty much a given that the military is perfectly capable and probably has been for years to deploy lasers for destructive purposes in earth orbit. Who knows what's meanwhile up there? And I thought Star Wars (SDI) has just been US-propaganda to speed up the USSR's economic meltdown...

How about offering to burn distros & RPMs/DEBs and mail them to africa or other places where the infrastructure isn't so great? I myself don't have a CD-burner at the moment (relocated from US->EU recently), but I can punch out a simple database-driven website quickly ... if anyone's interested, mail arminh(AT)usa.net ... maybe we can get something going?

  12. Very nice ... BUT on AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Review 6 Weeks Before Release · · Score: 5, Interesting

Now all that is quite an achievement, that they figured out all what's involved, but let's face it: Overclocking an Athlon XP 1900 to 2000 won't do anyone any good. That's like 2% more performance and at what kind of expense and risk? What would be informative and what wasn't provided would be if an Athlon XP 1500 (1.33GHz) can be rigged to reach 2000+ (1.66GHz) that way. It's all about how much headroom the CPU-core has and the price/performance overclocking provides.
Tom's article shows that the Athlon XP clearly doesn't have a lot of it. We can expect the Palomino core to stick around the 2000-rating (1.66GHz) for a while ... at least until they go 0.13micron.

Now that is indeed hard to believe! The US is currently engaged in a military confrontation with terrorists and one of their host-countries. Terrorists, who say they have chemical and nuclear weapons they will unleash if provoked. There just has been recent speculation about shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles and their possible threat they might pose to airliners. Guess what? That's probably exactly what happened and it won't be the last one. They're basically telling us "We know where and how to hurt you and the pain has only just begun!". Now all that shouldn't given reason to be afraid, but to be determined. We need to be very determined to follow through.
