From my research, a Canon GL-2 is my dream cam. It's not huge, and there are a few housings for it. Until my wife finds truly gainful employment, I can't buy it. For now I've got a JVC GR-DVL520. Picked it up for $200 on ebay from a repair shop. It scans nicely for logging timecodes.
I use a Powerbook G4 Aluminum 1Ghz w/768MB Ram, 60GB hd, etc. I use a firewire drive to do all the video work. For my work, a 120GB maxtor in a firewire 400 housing. If I needed to work on a bigger production, I'd get a firewire 800 board that can support 4 drives. These are around $80. Put it into a 4 bay scsi case from Halted electronics with some decent drive caddys. Your powerbook can raid the four drives into one big drive. Then you'll have some redundancy if you want as well.
I use a contour design shuttle Xpress. It's about $50 vs $120 for the prov2. It's very handy for stepping through frames. You may want to consider getting a FCP keyboard as well. It'll make editing much quicker.
I buy my DV tapes from SAMS Club. For $22, I get 8 Maxell MiniDV tapes. I've seen some ebay prices be a little cheaper, but not by much and that was in lots of 50 to 100. BTW, two of the same tapes are $8 at Wallyworld.
For serious editing work, get a Deck. More money, but really reduces the wear on your camera. Sony makes a MiniDV walkman that's supposedly excellent. You can get a used pro quality deck of ebay for decent money. That's where I'd buy.
For the camera, get an extended warranty. I have a $300 sharp cam that's not worth getting fixed. It eats tapes, and needs a simple alignment, but service is ~$200 minumum. Not worth replacing.
The GL2 does 3:2 pulldown, which is film style. Many people prefer the canon cams just for this reason.
For an excellent example of this stuff, check out
www.crewoftwo.com
They used canon cams with digital production and just came out sweet.
There's a fellow in CA who has solar cells on his house.
The power co buys back his excess power during the day, at the peak rate, and at night he uses power off the grid. His night usage is paid for by the difference between peak and evening rates.
Check out homepower.com -> Home power magazine. There are lots of people out there who want to power their stuff in a safe way.
It took a bit to get used to the interface, after owning a garmin etrex (the yellow one)
I'm REALLY impressed by the performace of the meridian platinum. It works inside my duplex, which no other unit has done. The antenna in it is a superb design.
The lame part is that there is no external antenna port.
The built in maps can be helpful for road trips, but they're mostly useless. I've got the software for it, but I've yet to pick up a sd card to upload stuff to. The etrex fits your hand nicely, but mine lost signal in trees, while the magellan kept full lock.
US Diesel really really stinks. Sulfur content is very very high.
However, you have some options.
Running SVO(Straight Vegetable Oil) or WVO (Waste...) has similar effects as running biodiesel. As for my 2000, I get Biodiesel from the local Oil company. Biodiesel really reduces the emissions. On a side note, The european vehicles are all rated for higher horsepower, because they have low sulfur diesel everywhere.
Mine is a 2000. It's louder at idle than a gasser, but nothing all that horrific.
AND...
I integrated a CAJUN unit with the factory head unit as the controller thanks to a VWCDPIC.
The driver will be included in the 4.1 release of cajun.
I forgot to note that these things drive great too. You get a normal suspension, my beetle has wide 16" tires stock and handles the corners pretty decent for a stock setup.
Add a $300 chip, you go up to around 115 horsepower from 90, and most get another 5mpg out of it. Add new injector nozzles, and get another 20-25hp. The torque gains are even more impressive. Performance is most excellent.
Oh, last time I bought gas for my 98 Grand cherokee(which was traded in) it cost me $37 to fill up with cheap unleaded. My Beetle cost me $14 at the diesel pump.
If you look at the fuel efficiency info on the EPA site, you'll notice that the TDI (Turbo Diesel Injection) Volkswagons can get around 50MPG. They start easy in the winter, unlike the older diesels. Check out www.tdiclub.com.
I just got a 2000 TDI Beetle and it's awesome.
Also, there are a few modifications that give you loads of extra power from the engine. Some will even increase efficiency and give you more power.
These are great cars, go check em out.
I just use album.pl - a handy free web script that uses imagemagick to make thumbnails.
I post em on my web host, phpwebhosing.com who doesn't give you limits on space as long as it's not a bunch of huge videos or mp3s, etc.
They do specifically say you can have webhosts.
you can see an example of how I use a modified album.pl at www.haskellobrien.com my (egocentric) site for pics I'm willing to sell.
Google is a pretty public thing.
Now, consider what sort of capabilities the NSA/echelon really has, considering they've been working on this sort of technology for years.
Have you ever rubbed Patrick Stewarts bald head for luck? How about while shouting 'Let slip the dogs of war!'
How about a boxing match between you and Wil Wheaton? (We could dress him up like a Klingon)
Actually, I had the camera laying around doing nothing. Those mirrors are a bitch to keep focused so you can use them with your rearview mirror. I was putting the computer in anyway, the babycam just kinda came about.
Windows DOES NOT meet my needs. Yes, windows will do gps, mp3, video, but it does not have journalized file systems, is really annoying to program under, and I don't trust the filesystem integrity further than I can throw a cow.
In fact, I tried windows first, and found the software lacking in features that I wanted.
I bothered to pay the $15 to get the packages, and street atlas installed and runs great under winex.
What version are you running? (I have 8.0, considering an upgrade)
The cheapest is in fact what I did.
I picked up a rand mcnally palm 3 gps unit for $30 at staples on clearance. you can get them for this on ebay.
Then rip it open and remove the gps board.
google for rand mcnally gps hack and you should find the page about it. I also modified mine to use an external active antenna.
They put up little white dome tent like structures to cover up the dish. The point was so people couldn't see where the dish was pointing/that there was a dish at all.
all you need is something to hide it.
Maybe a small privacy fence section with a nylon roof?
There's an old way of adding logging.
but you need to be able to execute perl scripts.
You place an image tag that points to the perl script "IMG SRC=whatever.com/cgi-bin/image.pl"
the perl script delivers the image, and writes the address info to the log file.
You can just use a 1x1 pixle white dot if you want.
You can modify the perl script to report what you want, or even format just like apache so analog can process them and make your web page display of your visitors.
These days, it's easier to just use a real web host who'll give you you own logs.
This year there was a guy inside a server cabinet waiting to come out in the middle of the night to own all the machines in the server room. A last minute change in server locations blew it for them. Sadly, I've forgotten who did it.
'nough said.

Arrrrrrrrrr. Just got my ipod the other day. I hadn't seen that stuff yet. Looks handy.

Dammit! I know it, But my brain always inserts Diesel instead of Direct for some reason.

At the bottom in the quotes bit...
"He's dead, Jim."

It's only a 6 channel. lame. just get a 12 channel oem gps board off ebay. It'll be better.
http://www.radiohound.com/randgps.htm enjoy.
