    ...because his favorite browser Firefox is still slower than Opera, and a far bigger download even if it doesn't have half the features. Heck, Mozilla's "mobile" browser requires fifteen times more memory or so than the mobile Opera version to run.

    Yeah, yeah, give it to me Mozilla fans... I know I'm not supposed to say anything about the stupid comment CmdrTaco added to the story.

    Really? Have you actually tried to run this new browser on a normal mobile phone, and not a monster with 50-100 MB RAM, which is the only thing they've been running it on so far?

    Opera runs comfortably on extremely low-end phones. WebCore does not.

    Nokia has a deal with Opera, but also pumps money into Mozilla, cooperates with Apple/uses WebCore, and has even been working on other browsers as well.

    If Nokia can bet their money on multiple browsers, why can't Google?

    Of course not. Opera is the only viable mobile browser. Mozilla's browser is too bloated, and the other wannabe browsers are simply crappy at rendering pages.

    The problem with this is that Mozilla, too, claims prior art as their own innovations. Look at mobile browsers, where the Minimo devs keep bragging about how great Minimo will be and how they've solved all the problems with mobile browsing. Opera did all those things ages ago!

    And most of the new features in Firefox 1.5? Opera has them already.

    Sony will do the DRM thing on PS3. And besides, if you buy something from Sony, you are supporting their DRM efforts. And you never know what they might do next... They could already now be planning something big for the PS3, like the digital equivalent of stabbing you in the eye.

    Why would they point that out to you when they could just explain to you that Nintendo's consoles have gory games too?

    There are lots of "gory games for teens who want to be adults" available for the GameCube, you know. Maybe Nintendo creates these "cartoonish and childlike" games internally, but there are other games that are not made by Nintendo. Haven't you paid attention?

    I can understand that you are a Sony fan now, but aren't you kind of contradicting yourself? Why are you allowed to judge the Revolution before it is released (it won't have gory games (which it will, but never mind facts...)), but those who praise it should just shut up already?

    Because those are the people who have been supporting Opera through the years. Ignoring your fans is a bad thing, as Opera knows. God, I sure hope you aren't working in customer relations or anything like that...

    Not really. Firefox couldn't even display Slashdot correctly until recently, and Slashdot's one of the main Firefox fan bases. How's that for "page display issues"?

    LOL! How clueless can you be?! Opera Mini works on just about any phone with Java support. Which today means just about all of them. That's more than four thousand. We are talking billions of devices here.

    So Linus is a power user who wants to tweak everything, and that's fine. But isn't the exact opposite of his attitude what brought success to Firefox in the first place? Mozilla wasn't successful until they "dumbed down" the browser until it was really easy to use, and it made for an easier switch than the old Mozilla monster.

    I am primarily a Windows user, but I do prefer KDE when I use Linux. However, I see no reason to bash Gnome for, well, aren't they doing exactly what Firefox did?

    And for nitpickers: With the subject for this post I was referring to two different ways to do GUIS - KDE vs. Gnome/Firefox :) If I am correct in assuming that Gnome is in fact going the "Firefox way", of course, which could be completely wrong :P

    Blah blah blah fancy words. Of course this is a marketing stunt. Of course they want more users. What on earth do you think the purpose would be otherwise?

    The point is that there's nothing sinister about this. They want to keep in touch with the user base, and they want to do something "crazy". Giving one user the chance to get his face on Times Square.

    You are insinuating that they are actually misleading their fans, which just proves that you simply don't know anything about the company. This is not IBM or Microsoft. This is a small Norwegian company that has been doing browsers for ten years.

    Of course not. Opera has had to worry about the bottom line, being the only independent browser maker. They had to make money, and couldn't rely on donations. So they had to sell it, until they figured out that if they got a better deal with Google they could give it away for free.

    Because Firefox came at the right time, when IE security issues were really being focused on, and it was free, and it got lots of hype.

    You are assuming that Opera is looking for the "perfect person". This isn't a huge corporation we are talking about. It's a tiny company from Northern Europe which isn't exactly known for its bragging.

    You obviously don't know anything about Opera Software. They are doing this as a thank you to their community, and they've just turned 10. Yes, the company has been around for ten years, and only now are they starting to do this kind of thing.

    Cynicism is good, but you are just proving your ignorance. Opera keeps in touch with its users. How often do you see Mozilla employees/representatives answering support questions over at MozillaZine?

    Oh, and there are lots more than seven people there.

    What do you mean doesn't come with anything? "Isn't bundled with any OSes", or "doesn't have any features"? Opera has loads of useful features, if that's what you are talking about. And the good thing is that they don't get in the way if you don't want them/need them.

    Opera is available for FreeBSD, not OpenBSD, and on Linux the installation depends on your distribution. It's got nothing to do with Opera itself since the installation uses standard packages for various distributions. If your distribution is user friendly, the installation of Opera for that distribution is user friently.

    I disagree. It's smaller and faster, and has a lot of useful features that simply beat Safari, hands down.

    Because Opera is smaller and faster, and it even has a better security record than Firefox.

    It's smaller, faster, and innovative. It also gives you lots of useful features without having to mess around with buggy extensions that get bolted on and clutter up the UI. Opera's UI is well thought out and everything simply works.

    Opera is less than cool?

    I don't know what you define as "cool", but I'd say that being smaller and faster than other browsers, and still having lots of useful features (that don't get in the way, by the way!) built in without the need to mess around with extensions is pretty darn cool.

    Not to mention the new Opera Mini browser which works on just about all mobile phones and is available for free.

    And of course the innovation which has helped shape the modern browser. The now standard search field and popup blocking? Opera came up with those. And countless other features we take for granted today.

    Yeah, I did find that if I took a break from Slashdot for a couple of days, I would often get mod points. But I haven't, and I have taken plenty of breaks. And I actually don't comment on most stories I read anyway.

    I think I've been punished for something, whatever that might be. And why should the admins care? They have tousands of potential moderators, so it doesn't matter to them if they kick out those who cross the line even a little, according to them.

    So yeah, it awards mod points if you aren't a rabid and eager Slashdot reader, but the thing is that it's been several months now, and at times I take breaks from Slashdot and only visit it a couple of times a week. That used to give me mod points, but no more.

    What the heck is going on here?

    Maybe someone should sign up with the nick "* * * Abc" and submit stories like mad to see if the Slashdot editors just pick the first nick with a somewhat interesting story...
