The Jamie and Adam do indeed have "engineering backgrounds". They do "engineering" for a living, as several people have pointed out by now.

If you could only take the time to at least check the facts before posting you would at least come across as somewhat reasonable, CyricZ. As it is now you are just spewing out posts at an alarming rate, and usually making completely obvious comments, or you are missing the point or spreading misinformation as in this case.

I had to say it. I've got plenty of karma, so I'll take my chance here in the hope that more people discover what kind of person Cyric is. Just look at the amount of comments he makes!

    Wow, a voice of reason...

The MySQL/SCO "partnership" is blown way out of proportions. And rather than actually trying to understand what is going on, people are all over MySQL.

As I understand it, what this deal with SCO is basically is about is that a lot of people are still using SCO products, whether we like it or not, and they are relying on MySQL. MySQL could take the "moral high ground" of screwing their customers and leave it at that. Instead, they decided to accept money from SCO to maintain MySQL for SCO's platforms, for the benefit of their customers.

One of the MySQL people even posted a comment about this back when the story about the partnership was posted on Slashdot.

You are making an excellent point: Lots of "non-evil" software is available for the "evil" Windows. Heck, most Slashdotters are Windows users. Why aren't they all over Apache, Mozilla, etc. for the Windows versions of their software?

This SCO thing is almost like mentioning child porn. The moment you do, people throw rational thought out the window and start acting like pre-programmed robots who are incapable of processing rational thoughts.

I think SCO sucks as much as the next guy, but the deal was done because it benefitted MySQL's customers, and MySQL got money from SCO for doing it, which basically means that there's less money in SCO's treasury to use for lawsuits.

Some apparently think that it's OK to screw their own customers. Who cares if Apple releases broken hardware? It's not like customers matter anyway, right?

Let's just ignore the fact that businesses have relationships with their customers, and some businesses actually don't want to make life hard for those who are paying them money...

Because Microsoft has Macs, that means that Gates and Ballmer use and prefer Macs?! Wow, that's quite a leap of logic you've got there!

Look, I'm as much of a hater of Microsoft's stuidity at times as anyone else, but going from "Macs at Microsoft" to "Microsoft execs prefer Mac" is just insane. Didn't you even read the Slashdot story about the Mac@Microsoft pictures? The guy was apparently fired for publishing pictures from an area he wasn't supposed to take pictures of, much less publish for the entire world to see!

You even linked to a page which explains the whole thing:

"To my mind, it's an innocuous post. The presence of Macs on the Microsoft campus isn't a secret (for everything from graphic design work to the Mac Business Unit), and when I took the picture, I made sure to stand with my back to the building so that nothing other than the computers and the truck would be shown no building features, no security measures, and no Microsoft personnel. However, it obviously wasn't enough."
See the parts in bold? They explain that:

    1. It is well known that Microsoft has Macs. It's no secret.
    2. He took the pictures without permission, and he knew he wasn't supposed to do so.

But hey, I'm all for a nice silly theory every now and then. I mean, what's the point in boring theories about the Mac purchase, such as Microsoft actually working on Mac apps, and wanting to keep an eye on the competition. No, easy answers are never right! So it must be Gates and Ballmer that ordered them for themselves since they prefer Mac OS over Windows!

Basically, we have an industry which makes loads of cash by preventing their customers from using technology to make things cheaper and more efficient. It is in the industry's interest to make sure that we download expensive ring tones and backgrounds from them, rather than simply using an MP3 or an image downloaded from the web.

In other words: This industry artificially maintains its profits by using what I consider to be highly immoral methods. If they did not have this choke hold on the market, the industry would shrink a lot and lots of people (investors, content owners...) would probably lose a whole lot of money.

It is almost like a cartel where various companies (content owners, mobile makers, etc.) get together to agree on how to squeeze the most money out of people and maximizing their own profits. Something like price fixing.

I am kind of wondering why no mobile maker has released a phone which lets the user do anything. Do they depend on content owners and network operators to make money?
