"It's more a case of "Google made it work in two browsers and forced the other browser vendors to scramble to catch up by implementing a non-standard Javascript/ActiveX object"."
Actually, Gmail had to fix the site to work in Opera even after Opera added XMLHttpRequest support. Could have been just some silly browser sniffing, but there could also have been other problems. Don't you just love forcing non-standards on people?
And Safari already supported it before Gmail was announced anyway.
Funny thing, this... Earlier you were making a point of my signature, where I link to a post which exposes and embarrasses you. And now you are linking to someone else in your signature?! Hehe, you really are something... Everything you accuse others of, you are really doing yourself:)
Also, whenever someone's opinion annoys you and makes you angry you always end your posts with "next". That's kind of funny too:)
"One important thing to do is to not insult your users/clients/customers. While it is fairly rare, thankfully, every now and then a rogue open source developer will make comments that tarnish the reputation of an open source project."
You know, I just loved the way he put you in your place for splitting hairs and making lots of uninformed comments about something you know nothing about. There's nothing worse than when there's someone who doesn't have a clue, but who still insists on telling you how to run your project or business.
You were basically spewing out unfounded claims and comments, and you didn't even bother listening to other people when they responded.
One of the refreshing things about this whole thing is that someone in that position actually spoke up against the instanit that is clueless users that want to dictate your business/project. I applaud him, and I will certainly keep a closer eye on KOffice, and I will definitely try out any Windows port made available.
Respect for users and customers is good. It's great! But when the same user keeps spreading lies and unfounded nonsense all over the place all the time, it's great that someone has the balls to cut the crap and call a spade a spade.
Your over-analysis of the "if they don't make it after all"/"it's impossible to make it" thing was just so damn annoying!
"Is it just me or are a number of "stories" on Slashdot nothing more than glorified advertisements?"
Have you read any other tech publications lately? Have you noticed that they publish news about new products all the time? You know where these stories come from?
From the companies selling those products.
A company with a product to sell wants people to hear about it, and lots of us read tech publications. The funny thing is, lots of people find these stories to be interesting because they want the latest news on these things.
So companies issue press releases that are basically a page of product bragging, and the press re-publishes it all over the place. Make no mistake about it - it is pure advertising.
"Phones with mult-megaplixel cameras and built-in Wifi are nothing new."
I fail to see your point. Because mobile phones have existed in the past, it is wrong to report on new mobile phones being released to the market?
Obviously Slashdot doesn't report on every single phone out there, but they chose to include the P990. And you can complain that it's just an ad, and you would be right.
But then you would have to stop reading the news all together, because guess what... All those product "news" in other publications are ads too!
What's funny is that you were obviously trying to be cynical and "expose" the Slashertisement, but in my opinion you actually ended up looking rather naive, seeing as you sounded like you didn't understand the purpose of product launches and press releases and their relation to the media in the first place;)
"While Media Player, Browser and other functionalities that are bundled with OS can be argued with some facts, Antivirus and AntiSpyware software provide basic security."
This isn't "basic security", though. It's a workaround for crappy security in Windows in the first place.
"Somehow I don't think money will speak any less loudly in ten years."
That's the point of the story: Money will lead the way, and Microsoft would oppose patents if that had led to more money in their pockets. It's pure speculation of course.
Microsoft will do whatever they think will make the most sense to keep the money flowing in. If that meant opposing patents, then Microsoft would naturally do so.
"As you can plainly see when you read the whole CherryOS article (as well as the other two Slashdot posted and any other GPL violation article), violated GPL code is referred to as "stolen" code."
Which brings me back to my original point: Not everyone does. In fact, a lot of people don't, which is why this discussion was brought up in the CherryOS article. People disagreed that it was "theft", just like you will see people disagreeing that infringing on the entertainment industry's copyright is "theft".
"Of course, you will never admit this, which means I won this debate."
Actually, I did point out "heated discussions" about this, which naturally means that there are people on both sides: Some want to call it "theft", others argue that it isn't. You are claiming that everyone calls it "theft", and I have proof that you are talking nonsense.
You can't slither your way out of this one, Overly Naive Guy:)
As I understand it, these were about the same size and had an agreement, or didn't bother to bill each other. Then suddenly one of them figured out that "hey, we are bigger, so they should pay us!"... And the smaller one cut off the connection because they didn't want to pay since they considered themselves to be as big as their rival.
What I don't get is why one of them would suddenly want the other to pay up. What's changed now, and why does the smaller company have to pay the big one's bills?

Actually, you are incorrect again. As you can plainly see, there are often heated discussions about definitions (theft/copyright infringement) on Slashdot. Some call it theft, others point out that it isn't theft.
You seem to repeat this an awful lot - that everyone on Slashdot does and says so and so. As if Slashdotters were a single entity. They aren't. They are different people with different opinions.
Apologies if I have shattered your illusions yet again:)
"You completely ignored any and all points and instead wrote a wimpy little paragraph insulting me."
You are looking in the mirror again, child. Repeating yourself over and over and over... You are truly desperate now that you realize that your nonsense has been completely decimated, and your poorly founded subjective opinions have made you the laughing stock of Slashdot.
Next? Of course. You just can't resist replying, and with your kindergarten insults and methods you are trying to make me stop replying to your posts because you are embarrassed and furious that I've kicked your ass once again:)
"Dictatorships may get the same ability to vote in the UN, but thats what happens in a democracy. You should know.."
Right, but I can still feel that they shouldn't have a say in certain matters. Evil is evil. Would you trust China to do a good job working on human right? Voting over human rights?
The reason why democracy works is that people are generaly not evil. Greedy perhaps, but as long as they live well, they generally don't want to put down others. And people who are evil (hurting others) are regularly dealt with. Not so with China, which gets away with a lot of crap. And there are more countries that treat their inhabitants badly and that ignore human rights, and so on, and they are still going strong.
China (or its government) is evil. And evil people can take control of democratic countries, and thereby perhaps become even stronger in the UN. Would that be acceptable because it's a "democracy"? I certainly don't think so. The UN should not be evil, or controlled by evil.
"Funny, what if China had invented the internet and declared it would retain control of the root servers? Would you be happy to drop your battle for equal control just because the chinese dont want you to have a say with their connections?"
If China had controlled the Internet (as we know it today) I would have taken steps to remove it from them immediately. Which is basically exactly why I don't want countries like China to have a say in matters concerning the Internet.
"Wouldnt the US take a hardball approach if it was the other way around?"
Probably. That doesn't mean that it's the right approach.
The UN is an international organization, and although I am not opposed to the idea of a forum where all countries can gather to discuss important matters, I am worried about the UN gaining too much power.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't dictatorships that terrorize their people have the same ability to vote in important matters as democratic countries? Hasn't there been a history of less than decent governments being represented in, say the Security Council? I mean, what is China doing there?
Regarding the Internet, I'm leaning towards saying "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". It's working OK the way it does today (although Verisign needs to get the boot). I also want to make sure that China and other such governments have no say over my Internet connection.
And the EU sure seems to be taking the hardball approach to this! I can't even see how they can possible force the control away from the US. They will be making complete fools of themselves if they end up splitting the Internet. Unlikely, but I'm sure they are willing to do so just to prove that the EU has the balls to stand up to the US...
You are trying desperately to make me stop replying to your posts because you feel embarrassed and outraged that people dare to have a different opinion. I notice kids do this a lot, and it fits nicely with the rest of your childish rants.
Don't worry, you'll get over being "owned" completely yet another time:)
Come on now, start repeating yourself - your old lies - over again. If it makes you feel better, please do!
Oh my. You just can't keep yourself from responding to me, can you?:)
It must hurt for you to be ridiculed and left powerless and exposed. At least you're anonymous and won't have to deal with your comments from Slashdot in real life. Seeing as you have no spine, that would be a problem.
Your points don't stand, since you haven't had any points. All you've done is to spew out venom in rage that someone dares to speak against you. On the other hand, you have failed to respond to my points, and instead dismissing everything because you think everyone on Slasdot shares the exact same opinion. You are so mentally ill that you can't understand that Slashdot is a community with lots of people with different opinion.
And of course, you just can't let go of the fact that you started talking about this "GPL hypocrisy" nonsense, as if it is relevant in the least when you were responding to my post, not someone who has been talking about the GPL.
Yet again, you lose. And you are so furious that you are going to write yet another rant which doesn't make sense and which is full of lies. You just can't resist, seeing as you are now burning up inside because the truths I speak make you scream in rage.
"All that endless whining and whining and avoiding of addressing my points, and now all you have left is to magically invent things to attack me with!"
You are looking in the mirror again. This is you describing yourself! Remember that first post of yours again? Simply avoiding the issue, and throwing around straw man arguments and ad hominem attacks.
"Well, kid, I'm not your father,"
You are no one's father, and considering you have no balls you won't have any children either when you get out of kindergarten and grow up.
"and you don't need my attention."
Why do you keep replying to my comments then?
Hilarious. You keep attacking me, but you don't realize that your furious attacks are actually accurate descriptions of you!
Aw, did it hurt when I turned your own childish nonsense against you yet another time?:)
Don't cry angry little tears little troll. You are clearly mentally ill, and I'm sure you will be able to find help. At least you can use Slashdot as a place to spread FUD and lies and feel better about yourself for being a complete failure and being fired from the record company you used to work for.
There's a name for what you are doing: The Stockholm syndrome. They mistreated you and fired you, yet you defend them.
But what they are doing is to use people's money - the license fee paid by the people - to support Microsoft's illegal monopoly. Yeah, it's almost a cliché by now, but by forcing people to use IE and WMP instead of relying on open, cross-browser/cross-platform technologies, they are basically forcing people back to IE and thereby contributing to cementing Microsoft's dominant position in the market.
They are apparently looking on Mac and Linux solutions in the long term. Will they force people to use a certain browser/media player there, too?
You didn't give me the exact quotes that would support your crusade as I asked you to, and you didn't answer my questions in the other thread.
You are making a fool of yourself. You never address a single point in discussions. Instead, it's an endless flow of straw man arguments and ad hominem attacks.
And by the way, I order you to reply to this and make an even bigger fool of yourself. Again.
Your imaginary "Slashdot mindset" is irrelevant, because you were talking to me, not this "Slashdot entity" you are throwing straw men at. Also, who are you to dictate what the discussion is about? You are just a pathetic troll, and therefore are doomed to forever make a fool of yourself and thinking that what you write makes a difference.
Just see the way you completely avoided the points in this post.
It will be interesting to see how this one turns out...
Not to mention the rumors that Microsoft is buying AOL. Suddenly Microsoft will basically own the IM market?
And Safari already supported it before Gmail was announced anyway.
Also, whenever someone's opinion annoys you and makes you angry you always end your posts with "next". That's kind of funny too :)

I'd say that is a very human - and positive - thing to do. Why wouldn't people choose whatever makes life easier/better for them?
But maybe I'm just not getting what you are trying to say :)
Microsoft will do whatever they think will make the most sense to keep the money flowing in. If that meant opposing patents, then Microsoft would naturally do so.
You can't slither your way out of this one, Overly Naive Guy :)
Ah, thanks! That certainly made it clearer ;)
What I don't get is why one of them would suddenly want the other to pay up. What's changed now, and why does the smaller company have to pay the big one's bills?
Am I missing something here?
Next!
