  1. Carpal Tunnel on Programming Until Retirement? · · Score: 3, Interesting
Carpal Tunnel syndrome is now widely thought to be a "brain" problem...

Typing does not require accurate position of the fingers - so long as you hit the "a" key, it doesn't much matter how you hit it.. Over time the brain doesnt bother to take care over which nerves are activated/sensed, because it appears not to matter. Unfortunately, it does!

The consequence of this careless activation of "roughly the right nerves" is what is called Carpal Tunnel.

The cure is to relearn accurate use of the nerves. One of the best ways of doing this has been found to be to learn hand embroidery! Old fashoned watchmaking (or repairling iPods/mobile phones) would probably work too. Most exercise or sports, which require force but little accuracy, will make matters rapidly worse.

What would really help is Microsoft being forced to sell software that is reasonably fit for the purpose for which it is sold. I seem to recall they mention that Windows is meant for use with the internet - that surely implies that it ought not to be 0wned in 5 minutes.

In the UK, and most probably Europe, it is a very serious offence to sell goods unfit for the purpose for which they are advertised.

You forgot to mention that the good Ol US of A is threatening trade wars because we won't buy this stuff.

If food is marked "contains GM stuff" no one in Europe will buy it. Consequently the supermarkets don't want it. The importers don't want it, and even if the yield is higher, most farmers here don't want it cos they can't sell it. A few farmers have been bribed by Monsanto to try it out for test purposes. Several of those have joined the protest movement, not least because they contaminated their neighbours crops after being told it wouldn't happen. (Most farms in Europe are under 100 acres, so farmers have a lot of neighbours, and they are not very far away!)

Any MP/MEP caught voting for GM stuff risks losing his seat, so there is a tendency for our laws to prohibit it until its adequately tested.

The US has problems selling it to us because of consumer resistance. So they are threatening retaliation on the grounds that it is "illegal interference with free trade". Surely its interference with free trade to force people to sell what their customers won't buy?

Then there are all the laptops that came with Win95 (eg P1) - Have you ever tried to replace the OS in a laptop? It ain't easy (Unless you are replacing it with NetBSD). If its no longer any use to you give the laptop away to someone, People rarely throw them away, so the Laptop goes on running Win95.
