  1. If Law & Order is correct... on Mitnick Testifies on Telco's Security · · Score: 1

Double jeopardy only applies to a single jurisdiction. Ashely Judd was convicted by one state, then confronted her husband in a different state, so there would be no problem charging her again. Also, there was a Law & Order ep where the guy thought the statute of limitations had run out, but it turned out that time when you were not in the state didn't count, and he had been living in another state, so they could still charge him. "The clock stops ticking when he leaves the state." So maybe this 5 year limit in Nevada has not expired yet.

  2. Classic non-physics moment on Physics in the Movies · · Score: 1

There's an issue of Adventure Comics (#353) with the legion of the super-heroes where these 2 villains are fighting - one of them has a hand that will dissolve anything it touches, the other has an axe that will cut through anything. The hand-guy dissolves the floor under the axe-guy, who falls through until he uses his axe to slice through gravity, which makes him float back up.

    Ebert is wrong.

The Earth only has a velocity over 1000 mph near the equator. The velocity depends on the distance to a line from the south pole to the north pole. If you were in Egypt, the Earth would be spinning at maybe 800 mph.

This is why the shuttle is launched from Florida - it is the most southerly part of the continental US so it adds the most speed - Heinlein talks about placing launch areas for ships as close to the equator as possible in one of his books.

There is a trivial pursuit card question that asks how fast the Earth spins and gets it wrong as well by saying 1000 mph. The basic problem is that the answer is in the wrong units, things spin N rotations per unit time, not N units of distance per unit time.

"You - lighten up. You - big trouble."

  4. re: early Batman on Spider-Man, Star Wars and the Power of Myth · · Score: 1

JK says: > Robert Kane's early Batman: The Dark Knight was disturbingly dark and angry before the moralists turned comic books to bland mush. Few people remember that Kane ended his first Batman series with our hero giving up on life and essentially committing suicide by turning himself into the famed Arkham Asylum, where villains from the Joker to the Riddler were being held. I think you are referring to the Arkham Asylum GN from around 1990. Bob (not Robert) Kane's 1940s Batman was very dark, but it never "ended" and the term "dark knight" was never part of the title, it generally refers to the reinvented version of Batman from the mid 80s. I thought the Spiderman movie was great. I hope sequels learn the lesson from Batman movies: there should only be *One Villain* per movie. Mike Meyers might make a good Dr. Octopus, though he may be a bit young for the part. I like the hint dropped about Dr. Connors - he would make a great complex movie villain. Reccomendation to everyone : buy the black and white marvel reprint volumes of Amazing Spiderman 1-20 and 21-40 (about $20 each). Issues 15-30 or so are just amazing.

  5. x-box has 90 day warranty on Crashing Xbox Kiosks · · Score: 1

In the ad for the x-box up here in Canada, it says that the x-box has a 90 day warranty, which can be extended to 1 year (sold & serviced by the store) for $49 Canadian. 90 days seems short to me. All the computer parts I buy are 1 year or more and I have returned 3 CD-ROM's in the last few years that initially worked, then died.
