Idiots spreading FUD as usual.
At least with regard to their "example" of inconsistent user interface. Just because the friggin color scheme is diffent... actually not even... brush metal versus gun metal? Give me a break.
UI issues are usually related to buttons being in the wrong place, behavioral changes etc...
What do you expect? new apps coming out now to look exactly the same as ones from 1999? Idiots.
I always thought that centrino was the general laptop platform, and the chips were pentium-M? Centrino was just a marketing tech term to imply a laptop with certain capabilities which include wifi.
And if Centrino does literally mean the cpu chip, how the hell do they put a wireless network card IN the chip? Is this just a news report typo, or am I missing something?
I'm sorry, but I'm not investing in any more "portable" devices that have what I call built-in tunnel vision.
Not until they combine an mp3 player, pda/portable pc / cell phone, wifi, slim touchscreen into one convenient and affordable device.
I know there are such devices already out there, but many of them are weak in one category or the other. For example most cell phones have terrible mp3 playback quality.
Oh yeah.. DRM sucks too, but everyone already knows that:)
P.S. I also would like to be able to change my OWN BATTERY!! apple idiots.
I'm a bit of a laymen, the huge stadium sized accelerator uses some kind of giant magnetic field to propel a particle and split atoms at the other end right?
Why do we do this again? Just to detect the junk that's emitted from the destroyed atom? Why do hospitals need a tabletop accelerator?
There's just no excuse for this kind of memory usage, and no I didn't visit any flash intensive / video pages. I was surfing news sites, closed windows after using them.

The first thing to make clear, is where the term comes from. From the wiki:
"Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a supposed second-generation of Internet-based services -- such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies -- that let people collaborate and share information online in previously unavailable ways."
It is not about AJAX, or javascript, or fade-in fade-out eye candy.
Now you might notice that "social networking sites, communication tools" is nothing new to web technology, but certainly the web population has grown considerable, given more "uummph" to what was previously thought of as a social networking site.
Of course the idea that the size of the web user base alone is what makes web 2.0 , web 2.0 is ridiculous.
The real reason the term was coined, was because marketing people and investors needed a new term for the.com business model, since even mentioning the word dot com causes most potential shareholders to flee.
So there you have it. You want investment? Call your idea a web 2.0 idea, yes its the same as.dom.
Once the web 2.0 bust occurs (and I promise it will), a new term will be invented (I just pray it isn't web 3.0).
Only an individual with money to burn (and small brain) is going to upgrade from an Athlon 64 single core 3000, to an Intel Core 2 Duo.
I'm sorry but I could envision the same idiot upgrading from his 2500mhz cpu to a 2800mhz cpu as soon as it comes out.
I upgraded from my 700mhz (overclocked from 533mhz) celeron, to an athlon xp 2500 to play Halo (I also got a decent graphics card of course). So far.. even the so called state of the art games coming out run smooth on this same machine. Half life 2 ep 1 is a good example. Yes, sometimes I have to turn graphics settings down a little.
I'll likely hold off till quad core cpu's begin to mature, the Windows Vista upgrade dust begins to settle, and games start using some DirectX 10 features (games that are actually worth playing... I don't get why Prey got such good reviews, its the same rehashed crap, yes I know its not dx10. But while I'm at it.. I do recommend Company of Heroes, sure its the same RTS rehashed crap, but I am very addicted:) ).
Perhaps by then AMD will have the new fast chip that tramples on Intel by a whopping 2% speed increase, and the intel people will be called "fanboys"... sigh reviewers can be so removed from reality sometimes.
For gods sake... it reads like one of those "10 reasons why I love my Macintosh" articles.
Excuse me while I poop on this article.
Aaaaaaahh... much better.
Through the endless marketing speak about the "technologies" involved in HDTV and HD_DVD and blueray... I find myself just wanting to ignore the whole thing.
They have managed to so utterly confuse the average consumer, that people actually flock to best buy and ask the advice of the A/V *cough* "experts" over there.
HD-DVD / Bluray isn't about **ing movies, its just a high density dvd player (hopefully with more data / computer applications than the dinky junk they are going to cram onto the next hollywood trash movie).
Then we come to HDTV.... even more confusing video format that means:
A friggin resolution of 1920x1080 (I think) some DRM DVI/hdmi connectors (and god damn price of the cable.. lol what a joke).
The industry seems to think if they can thouroughly confuse the consumer... they can probably also convince him/her to change his/her entire Home Theatre setup.
I bet in less than a year's time, there is going to be some new HDTV surround sound requirement that will force everyone to replace their current dolby digital sound / speakers in order to truely enjoy hdtv sound.
I also have a question... this thing about 32bit vista not being able to produce true HD resolution with movies.... is that some kind of joke? My computer can already play that resolution, what gives? Is the encoding of the movie that cpu hungry?
I'm sorry.. obviously I'll be marked as a troll... but I find this so frustrating. The arsenal of buzzwords is starting to get to me. For gods sake.. can't I just use bluray to back-up my files? I don't care about movies.
Honestly, I don't get this web 2.0 "problem" of more adds = angry community.
It's no secret these massive community sites cost a lot of money, anyone expecting to get it for free should expect to be subjected to some form of advertising.
As long as they don't overwhelm the user with 1024x768 flash popups forcing you to watch a 15min coke add, I don't see the big risk of adding more advertising. WAKE up... money makes the internet tick.
Great install script... but seems to not work if I try an installation location other than/var/ossec
The rule based "xml" for identifying problems in logfiles is great.
the active response doesn't work. I've tried everything EVERYTHING. and injecting all sorts of attacks didn't even cause the firewall script to block the ip.
I searched and tried, and fiddles, and cried. Nadda.
"This isn't as magical as it sounds because JavaScript is pretty close to a superset of Java, at least in a cosmetic sense. It's not complicated to strip away some typing information from the Java code and end up with something that resembles JavaScript."
uuuh this is totally besides the point, even if it IS false. Forget about this idea that the toolkit converts java code to javascript (which in itself doesn't make any sense).
The point is you can code server side applications that automatically handle browser behavior. Hacking javascript into the outgoing html from a server-side app usually ends up polluting your code... makes it harder to read, harder to maintain, plus you have to worry about different implementations of JS across browsers.
I've tried a lot of gimp versions. And even the most basic image manipulation tools in gimp (contrast, hue, unsharp mask.., burn dodge, scale image) produce some mediocre looking results. Somehow the behind-the-scenes algos that photoshop uses just produce better looking results.
I wish it weren't true.
I'll give paint.net a try, but I doubt it has everything I need.
I would like to ditch photoshop for Gimp. But I've noticed one crucial problem. Was wondering if anyone else noticed..
When I do a scale image (resize smaller of course) I find even when doing it "cubic" it shows slight aliasing or "jaggies". Photoshop's resize always appears flawless.
What might I use to cluster together linux servers such that they actually act as a single SMP machine?
I'd want to do more than just loadbalance webservices with it.
It want shell accounts on this cluster that act as one maineframe. People would shell into their home directories (which I suppose would all be from one big NFS), and run processes and whatnot on the entire cluster.

Russian Roulette.
"please think of the children" ! lol ... why do I find that line so funny?
I have read article theorizing that Bill is so anti-social he is borderline Autistic. That really wouldn't make him a very effective president.
A condition that's easily excused in the tech community obviously.

Thanks for filling me in
It's all nice and dandy that they used 4 x AMD Opteron(TM) 885 Dual Core 64 bit , with 1.8 TB of space to "Compute"? (heh) this image.
:)
But where are the REAL details?
I.E. what camera, what lens, what settings, what lighting, what software did they use to stitch?
You know.. details that are interesting, not how much ram they used
I have no idea what you just said, but since you used the term "quantum efficiency".. I have no choice but to believe you :)

Oh grow up.
There are a million and one non-profit orgs just like this one that use your tax money. It's a fact of life. If you don't like it, move to Rawanda.
Second, since I'm Canadian.. these are my tax dollars too.
Love,

P.S. Since you are probably 12 years old, this is all a moot point.
Now all the villagers can crowd around the one internet connected PC in a 6,000 Mile radius to blog about some whale blubber :)
Ouch.. just kidding.. err I'm clutured. I promise.
Love,
