A good compiler will know that the index (1) is above or equal to zero, therefore no matter what the length of the array, the lower end is covered. The higher end isn't covered, of course, but then, it's still only one check. Zero checks if the array is in the local scope and the array is of constant (compile-time) size.

Anyways, bounds checking is a great thing. You should really learn what it does - it kills your performance, but it's WORTH IT. My god is it worth it. It's almost like manna from heaven.

  19. Java has deficiencies on Java Tools For Extreme Programming · · Score: -1

But blaming Java for the mistakes and misunderstandings of developers isn't a good idea.

On many sites I found that applets were slow or unpredictable on IE and/or Netscape 6.

They probably put an infinite loop in the 'paint' method - the proper way is to create a timer thread that calls 'repaint' a few times a second, but many sloppy developers put an infinite loop in the paint statement - this is a guaranteed way to kill the performance and make it almost unusable. Luckily, noone except the most green of applet developers does this anymore.

The worst problem is program shutdown - some shameful software architect at Sun decided that seperate applets should share the same runtime - leading to a situation where it's almost intractably difficult to ensure that threads don't trip over each other, threads aren't shut down properly, etc etc. This is truly shameful, and Sun should hang it's head for this. But it's not something that your average user is going to trip over when using their browser.
