Is this so-called 3D image storage device the same one the Industry Week Magazine mentioned several years ago?
It is something about a quartz-like device, and the storing/retriving of data is through laser, and the data supposed to be stored in holographic images, something like that.
If this 3D image storage thingy is the quart-zlike device, then it is certain _NOT_ a pre-vaporware thing.
Industry Week magazine carried a short intro-article several years ago (sometime pre-1996!!!) and the thing may have been going through several years of development already.

Amiga & Transmeta?
·
· Score: 1
It _may_ be just a rumor, or it _may_ be not.
But anyway, if there _is_ something going on between Amiga and Transmeta, it'd be good for the rest of us.
For too long we have been put in this little hole where we either have to go Intel or Mac. Amiga of yesteryears were good in technicality, but bad in popularizing its product (ie., marketing).
Now that we _may_ have a third choice, software (Amiga) _and_ hardware (Transmeta), there _may_ be chances yet for this world to see something totally new.
The Amiga/Transmeta combo _may_ use Linux as a base, or _may_ not, but who cares.
What we truly need today is CHOICE, which we _really_ don't have.
Let us all hope for the day when we have wider option then the old WinTel or MacPPC duality.
And the benefits won't be only limited to the open-source communities.
For examples, there are initiatives abound to write open-source softwares for education, and those softwares not only will benefit the schools (by cutting down cost) but also the generations of students to come.
Most of the time, under the propriety software model, schools have to upgrade their softwares in order to get updated --- like MicroSoft's Encarta encyclopedias, if what you have is 1996 version, you just gotta upgrade or you won't get the new stuffs they put in --- but under the open-source models, scores of volunteers around the world can do the upgrading for FREE, and because there are PEER REVIEWS among the world-wide volunteer network, the upgraded informations will stay FACTUAL too !!
The effort taken to foster the open-source development with technical and financial support will ultimately benefit the entire world.
I would like to give my thanks to all those who will support the open-source initiatives and also to those who actively volunteer their talents and valuable time to do the actual coding.
When one talks about SCO, one thinks of two other things --- Xenix and Dinosaur.
And talking about Xenix --- do you know that the AMF corporation, --- Yes, the one who supplies bowling equipments to those bowling centers --- still uses Xenix to run their bowling alley machines ?!
Recently I popped into one of my friend's bowling center and I was surprised to see that his bowling machines were running XENIX !!!!
And the kick is he had just installed the machines last year !!!!
Wow, talk about Dinosaurs.
SCO is the supplier of DINOSAUR-TECH to all those DINOSAUR corporations, and AMF sure is one of them.
Two outcasts shot dead some jocks and bitches, and \. immediately turned into a geek/nerd support group, chanting the "geek ain't killerz" thingy.
Then those nutz who hated guns took their turn to chant "Gunz are dangerous, BAN THEM!" thingy here.
C'mon people, you can do better than that.
So what if some bitches/jocks got whacked?!
So what if some demented parents/teachers got panic and report the nerdy kids to the cops?
It's all part of GROWING UP, man.
What do you guys want?
You wanna grow up in a place like Pleasantville, where NOTHING HAPPENS, where everybody treats everybody else with sweet smiles and hugs?
You wanna grow up in a place where there is NO SENSE OF COMPETITION, where boyz don't have to PROVE THEMSELVES to the girlz before they got laid?!
C'mon, where's the EXCITEMENT of getting laid by the most sexy girl in town, if the average (not to mention DUMB) geek gets to screw her too?!
Part of TRUE GROWING UP is PAIN.
Yes, PAIN OF BEING REJECTED, PAIN OF BEING HUMILIATED, PAIN OF BEING AN OUTCAST --- they are just part of growing up.
The more PAIN you get when one goes through his growing up period, the more CHARACTER one will develops.
So what if the geeks and nerds are being outcasted?!
So what if the geeks and nerds are being humiliated?!
So what if the geeks and nerds are being laugh at, being taunted, being bullied by those bitches and jocks?!
I was a geeky kid once. I was laughed at not only by the football players, but also by those sexy bitches who screwed those football players.
So what?! So what if I was laughed at?!
So what if they taunted me and destroyed my sceince project?!
Yes, I felt tremendous pain back then.
Yes, I was very angry back then.
Instead of taking up a gun and blasted them all to hell (oh yes, that thought did come across my mind many times back then, and I had my copy of Jolly Rogers' cookbook and I tried out several of those "recipes" too) I channeled my anger to propel me in my academic study.
To me, if the mindless jocks and bitches don't want me around, then I'll go several steps AHEAD of them.
I mean, if those bitches and jocks want to waste their youth screwing their brains out, let them have it their ways.
For me, my youth was spent in learning all I can learned, understanding all I can understand while my brain is still young and robust. And I never regret what I had done.
Today I own my own electronic manufacturing business, and I have over 500 employees.
The jocks and bitches that used to laugh at me are cleaning toilets and sweeping floors for me today.
For me, as long as I am the one who have the LAST LAUGH, I don't mind going through the hardship and pains of being laughed at in the beginning.
And to the gun-banning nutz out there --- you will never know how BAD a government can be until you loose your right to bear arms.
My company owns manufacturing plants in several SouthEast Asian countries, where the people have no right to bear arms. Those people have no human rights, as far as their governments are concerned.
The government can do anything to the people there. They can detain anyone anytime, without having to obtain anything from the court system. They can sik their cops to kill anyone without having to answer for the killings.
You can be alive and well one day, and be declared dead by the government the next day, and your family will have no right to sue the government for any wrongdoing.
That's the situation in many SouthEast Asian country today, and that is because the people there have no way to fight back to the oppressive governments.
With all the guns and weapons in the hand of the oppressive government, the people there enjoy no freedom, no rights, no liberty and they couldn't even do the "Pursuit of Happiness" thing like you have been in America.
I'd hope them gun-banning nutz would think before they open their mouth.
Unless they are willing to give up all the rights they are enjoying today, they better stop yelling those silly "Guns are Bad" slogans.
Guns maybe bad, but guns in the hands of oppressive government is worse.
The first time I knew about the book was from an article from the Whole Earth Review (WER)... and then the same book was mentioned in one of the computing/technology mag, and that got my interest.
So, poor student like me who couldn't find enough money for tuition fees (by skimping on FOOD !!) generally chose to "borrow" the book from the library (hehehehe, still have it with me, hehehehehehe) and for once, I DO NOT REGRET I STOLE THE BOOK BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS CERTAINLY GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME TO STEAL !!!!!
The above, folks, is _my_ review of the book.
Am I thinking of stealing the NEW version of the book? You bet I am. Hehehehehehe
That "Chief Program Manager" guy for Slate, is he for real?
I mean, any "Chief Programmer" would have known that
1. Linux _DOES_ run DOS programs, with DOSEMU. Latest versions of DOSEMU are 0.98.6 (stable) and 0.99.9 (development). Both are available at ftp://ftp.dosemu.org
2. There are many EXCELLENT leads on the Web for Linux. How can a "Chief Program Manager" be so lame as to get "lost" in the Web?! Or is this a relection of how lame the SLATE thing is, huh?
The piece needs _NO_ conspiracy theory to see clearly how Micro$oft is afraid of Linux. The two articles are but the newest additions to M$'s FUD against Linux, that's all.
There have been too much self-indignation on how Asia having to rely on Silicon Valley on everything....
Now that the Russians are proving that they can produce something this amazing even without a good semiconductor Fab.
Those of you in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China and India better take heed --- you've got the Fabs, why don't you work with the Russians and produce this amazing chip?

Linux Base, Moon ---
Today in Linux Base we have Alan Cox issuing yet another 103 of his famous *AC series of patches.
Linus Torvalds is not amused, because it is a pain in the ass to recall the million of spacecrafts because of bugs.
On the other hand, on NT Base, crashes happen left and right, and no one wants to insure any crafts flying on NT no more.
When asked about the insurance crisis, Mr. Gates shrugs, and Peter Norton crosses his hands.
The old lady knows only this: Laws are used to control the people, and the people _needs_ to be controlled.
Typical control freak we have here.
Never trust anyone entrusted with any officialities. You give them an inch, they want a mile.
And now they are trespassing on the rights of the Net users, in the name of "helping the developing countries".
What the UN is doing is to impose a FORCED SOCIALISM on everyone who use the Net.
Down with the UN !!!
No tax without representations !!!
Well.... tried to go to the poll and the darn thing isn't working.

The guy is scared of Linux, man.
What he said about Linux was true though --- without scalability, without having a good multiprocessor capability, Linux can't go BIG TIME.
So, let's make the guy even more nervous by making Linux EVEN BETTER !!!

Katz was asking the question: "Why Kids Kill?" and I would like to ask Katz and all others this question: "WHY ASK WHY ?!"
I mean, look at what we have around us today
--- NATO bombs Yugoslavia killing civilians in the name of "peace"
--- Cops beating up people in the name of "upholding the law"
--- Parents beat the craps out of the children in the name of "teaching them value"
--- People killing/maiming/hurting/torturing/abusing each others in the name of "community interests"
So why should we expect the kids to behave like CIVILIZED BEINGS while we grown ups behave like bloody @$$holes ?!
Stop blaming the kids. Blame ourselves for making this world a pathetic place for the kids to grow up in.
Stop blaming the guns. Blame ourselves for behaving so violently.
All the question asked "Why kids do that?!" "Are guns dangerous?!" are nothing but monday-morning armchair quarterbacking.
If we don't want the kids to behave like animals, we adults have to stop our barbaric behavior first.
Oh, not _that_ first time, puhleeese... :)

No matter which way you view it, fighting itself is the ultimate proof of idiocy.
From the texts of Sun Tze and Baltasar Gracian we know that the _BEST_ way to defeat your opponent is to make them defeat themselves.
