I do not understand why parent is modded to -1 (Flamebait)
It does cost BILLIONS to send human beings to space and keep them alive up there
While I do not agree with stop funding NASA, I do agree that NASA has to re-organize its priorities and stop wasting tax-payers' money on un-necessary mission
Especially during times where many tax-payers are feeling the impact of the economic crisis
What gets me is, the article claims the Chinese are going to build a 'big space station'. Actually, the current plans are to have a 60 ton station in orbit by 2020. The ISS, on the other tentacle, weighs approximately 450 tons.
Consider the tone of TFA, and then consider the real aim of TFA, and you can understand all the necessary exaggerations
I won't be surprised if those behind TFA has something to do with the defence industrial complex - after all, it's the defence industrial complex stands to gain the most if the people scared enough to demand their congress representative to "revive our space program before the Chinese overtakes us"
All hotels have air conditioning equipment which generates waste heat. They also have laundries and guest hot water which need a lot of heat. How stupid not to combine them?
There is no financial incentive for the hoteliers
If there exists a law that incentivizes small and medium business enterprises to re-use the excess heat they generate, I'm sure many would make the necessary changes
Actually, a similar law has already been in effect for decades for heavy industries - factories that generate excess heat were encouraged to generate electricity and then sell the electricity to the power company
If you get a Japanese Bath (with beautiful Japanese ladies enjoying their baths) on the side of a super-computer center or data-center, who will man the data-center?
All the geeks from the data-center will flock to join the Japanese ladies in the Japanese Bath
Everyone wants to have billions and trillions that they can spend spend spend, without having to work for it
Every geek wants to have sexy gf with big boobs
Every nation wants to be the King of the World
But can anyone afford to do anything anytime anywhere?
Of course, China wants to be many things
It may even wants to be the first nation establishing a base on the moon
But it doesn't mean China will do it the way other countries (USA and former USSR) had done - China may opt to do it a firm and careful step at a time
Their "TianGong" space module experiment become a reality thanks to USA, Europe, Russia and Japan.
It's because the above-mentioned had blocked China's joining the ISS, that China had no choice but to build their own space station
China's next move, according to my own observation, is to build a space-station that can double as half-way-station between planet Earth and Moon (and maybe beyond)
They may want to build a space-station that not only be used to carry out zero-gravity experiments, but also, doubles as a warehouse, a parking lot, a fuel depot, and a R & R spot for their space crews
And they may even want to build another space station orbiting the Moon, to enable them to go even further, like Mars
... Intel does not charge an arm and a leg for their new "Xeon Phi"
If Intel can make the thing affordable (but I really doubt Intel will ever sell anything that is "affordable") then yes, the Linux community, particularly those who do not have any resource to any super-computer, can start running simulation programs that requires massive crunching power
Laundry shops need a lot of very hot water to "cook" the dirty linen that they receive everyday
Almost all laundry shops are using water heaters - whether they be electric powered water heaters or gas-burner powered water heaters - to heat up the water
Here's my proposal:
On the side of all super-computer center or any large scale data-center the authority should draw up a special "zone" for laundry shops
That way, all the hot water generated from the computers will be put to good use - without any additional wastage of precious energy resource
It's kinda fits into the "Go Green" concept that is so popular these days
Unfortunately there are still too many of those who believe that the law will "protect" them
Even here, we can see those who fervently advocate going to the police / fbi / court even in the cyberwar cases
There's no point to go to the law when the other side does not believe in one - and, the law there is, in most cases, do not have the jurisdiction over those black hat, in the first place
I think that's what most of us wanted, considering China is a communist country
Umm ... Last time I checked Russia is a communist country too
How come there was no similar battle cry over Russia (and the previous USSR) involvement in the ISS?
The US had plenty of good reasons for barring China from the ISS, the most conspicuous of these being that China would likely not contribute much
If that was true, Italy, Brazil and India (among other not-so-advanced states) would have been barred from the ISS

I do not think the Chinese wants to stay up there for long if the ROI doesn't materialize
The Chinese are pragmatic people
It ain't do anybody any good with racist garbage, like the one you have posted, in serious discussions, like this
Please cut it out
Thank you !

Would you guys please stick to the real issue here?
It's about China's entry in the space venture, and USA's reaction to it
It's not about China creating a fake moon or erecting a barrier or whatever kind of stereo-typical stale jokes
I won't be counting out the USA with such a broad brush
Remember, when they sent out the astronauts to the moon, the computing power of the entire space module is less than a 386 chip
Today, even a not-so-smart phone has computing power much more than the 386
In other words, if USA wants to go to moon today, it no longer has to do it from scratch
China had wanted to cooperate with the world in the space venture
China had wanted to join the ISS
The United States of America objected, and barred the Chinese from ever stepping into the ISS
That left China with no other alternative but to construct their own space station
In other words, the space "RACE" has become a race because that's what USA had always wanted

what about cooking oil?
What about it?
You are lucky
My first thought was that it must be a joke
But then, April is some two moons ago
Yes, the first time I seen it I thought I saw "Xeon pffffft" !
INTEL PROCESSOR RUN HOT!
Maybe my exposure to the real world is very limited ... ... but I have yet to encounter a processor that runs both fast and cool
beaming the heat to deep space
I don't think solar panel can beam heat into deep space
There's one big problem

" ... I don't know is proof that slashdot has fallen ... "
Slashdot has not yet fallen
Slashdot is falling
Many parties are trying to grab Internet for their own selfish gains
Some wants to carve out the Net, into walled-gardens, so that they can make their visitors "captivated audience" and then profit from it
Others wants total control over Internet because they are scared of free exchanges of idea that may weaken their own ideology
And then there are those who want to restrict the flow of contents on the Net - with ridiculous claims of how "piracy has greatly damaged the economy"
I've been on the Net for decades. In fact, I've been online way before there was "Internet"
John Perry Barlow of the Grateful Dead once penned "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace"
It was a very nicely worded manifesto, but unfortunately it did not have teeth in it
Looking at what is happening to the Net as we speak, is there a way to keep the Net truly independent?
... is no more
When Slashdot was brand new - trust me, I was there - there was very few racist post, and there was no "mcpc" spams either
Sigh !!

Am I missing something?
Why in the world Intel wants to resurrect a many-cored graphic chip that performed far worse than what Nvidia or ATi are offering?

Not if the hacker closed the hole after he sneaked in (from that same vulnerability)
There are, and they are only in soft copies
