Still, like tfa mentions, you'd have to have a lot of knowledge about what you are patching.

I just don't see much coming down the line that is going to solve anything: Spam, Spoofing, Virii, Worms, etc. Some things give me hope, like the spread of Linux, but even then, how is it really going to help? The spammers and scammers aren't going to give up. They're going to hire Linux experts and port their code, cause some of the people are going to click ok, and install whatever it is they got. If you put some popup that warns them, most of the people who clicked ok are going to ignore the popup.

Microsoft won because they sold a commodity OS that ran commodity SW on commodity HW and they let pretty much anyone be a vendor. It's that simple.

Apple didn't lose, so much as they could never grow as fast as all of the windows clone makers and Apple never benefited as rapidly from economy of scale and hyper-competition, which meant that their machines were more expensive, until recently. That's not a co-ink-a-dink.

We could talk about the Amiga, Commodore or BeOS, the latter I still have the disks for, but what's the point. I used to visit the Amiga store and actually saved up enough to get a base system right before the went out of business, which I still love them for.

Would you rather be running a PCjr or Warp? Don't blame MS for those, blame IBM. I had a PCjr and believe me it was worse then painful. To say that their reach exceeded their grasp would be telling. If you want Warp, I think I still have those disks for it as well.

Yahoo! should fit in nicely at News Corp. I said the same thing when MS made their bid. I don't trust either and this deal won't alter my opinion, whether it happens or not.

His presidency will be remembered for 9/11, which, was not his fault. People will remember Katrina to a much lesser extent mainly because there was such stunning incompetence at all levels, not just federal.

Even the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will be passed on to the next president, and the longer they go on, the less they will be tied with Bush. Nixon and LBJ are more tied to Vietnam then JFK. The same will be true for Afghanistan and Iraq, and the horse could still fly. I know Democracy is passe, but a little whiff of it now and then can sometimes make all the difference in the world.

I sometimes chuckle watching Bush play the buffoon, while always pulling a rabbit out of his hat at the end. This is a true story. My bro and I were season ticket holders for the Texas Rangers baseball when W was the mascot for the owners group. One night the stadium was almost completely empty and W decides to go chat with the remaining fans. He sit down next to us and we ask him if the Rangers are going to resign their biggest hitter. He goes into this spiel about how they're trying to keep him, but that it "takes two to tango" (swear to god, actual quote), and that they realize the fans like the guy, yada, yada. 3 days later, big hitter gets traded to the Yankees. I send out my software without any gpl stuff and an installer, also non-gpl, that grabs gpl stuff for the user. At that point, the gpl would be between the user and the gpl author, not me and the gpl author.

Take a company like McAfee. They have a router/spam detector that runs linux. Well, maybe they want to add a gpl firewall. Instead of shipping the product with the firewall, they have the user select from the gui and it gets downloaded and installed. How is McAfee bound by the gpl to deliver the source code or abide by the gpl in this situation? What if the installer comes with a list of firewalls, all with different licenses, how would McAfee be bound to those licenses? I think in both cases it is the user who would have to abide by the license.

With the bloat that comes with software development, including oss, it would save a lot of time and energy to forego gpl issues.
