  1. Interface niggle - smooth scrolling tabs on Firefox 3 Beta 5 Released · · Score: 1
Okay, trying it out, and immediately found an annoyance:
They've implemented Smooth Scrolling in the tab bar. I really dislike smooth scrolling, and turn it off whenever possible, but in this case, you can't.

Unless you dig into the discussion of the patch to find that you have to add

    user_pref("browser.tabs.useLegacyScroll", true);
to your prefs.js file. Unfortunately, this also disables the good bits of this patch, one of which is that triple-clicking on the arrows at either end of the tab bar will take you to that respective end of your tabs list. That's not very well worded, but if you use lots of tabs, you'll know what I'm talking about and why it's a good thing.

However, I doubt that they'll add an option to turn the smooth scroll off after all the hard work they went to to implement it. As they say: "animation is something we definitely want to do more of" (blatantly out of context quote, but it does seem to be the majority opinion...)

Unfortunately I think I'll never see a FF3 version of Sage or MouseGestures.

Why is that? Not questioning your assertion, I just am curious.
Mouse gestures are one of those usability enhancements that have become second nature to me (long-time Opera user). The first extension I always install is All-In-One gestures. (And turn off the bloody mouse-trail. I know what gesture I made, I don't want you to waste time drawing it for me.)
Haven't had a look for a while at alternatives - searching just now revealed Mouse Gestures Redox and Firegestures, both of which I might give a test run.

I have to say, though, Opera's strategy of building the gesturing right into the browser engine does make them feel a bit "snappier". If I could code worth a damn, I'd hack up my own version of FireFox that did the same...

From the web page of the /. hero of the hour:
Magistrate Judge Arthur J. Boylan ruled that Vilana cannot copy my computer hard drives and I don't have to produce email between myself and my attorney. However, I must turn over email with the terms "Vilana", "Vilenchik", "Zubitskiy", "Kazaryan", "Walker", etc. I sent Vilana's attorney a DVD with over 500 emails...they can sift through my private thoughts and feelings about their misconduct as described to my parents, sisters, and friends. Note: at trial in November, 2007, Vilana's attorney actually cross-examined me on these emails, which did not appear to prove anything except my own version of events.

Note to self: if ever thinking of getting involved in litigation, seed potential keywords into an email spam generating engine of some kind. "All emails with terms (keyword)? Certainly - here's 8G of text for you to read..."

Congratulations to Mr. Gregerson. Reading the timeline shows it was a long, hard battle that many would have given up on.

Yes, but they explain their reasoning for doing so, and also discuss this at the end of the article:

"According to a manual by AT (1989), the direction of the contrast (dark on light, or light on dark) might also affect legibility. When light text is placed on a dark background the text may seem to glow and become blurred; this is referred to as halation, and it may make the text harder to read. Some evidence for an effect of halation was found in the current experiment... more research is needed on this topic before any strong recommendations can be made."

I've watched this film thirty-plus times, and it sounds like 'fucker' to me, every time. Really not sure where people get this idea of a slurred / doubled pronunciation. Don't forget that Hauer is a Nederlander by birth and despuie all his work and training, isn't immune from occasional inflections.

Well, he may not be slurring it, but I've always heard it as having the intent to at least sound a little like "father". I wouldn't be surprised if it was changed from "father" to "fucker" by Hauer - he also cut down the "tears in the rain" speech from its original much longer form.
Perhaps someone could ask Mr. Hauer next time they see him...

Anyway, the thing is, I'm hoping that this is not actually a change - I prefer him saying "fucker".

True, but it's something I'd like to see kept in Scott's final ultimate no-this-time-I-mean-it-really edition.

Anyways, I recently placed an order for the 5-disc version, with the work print as well, so it's not like I'll be missing out.

I think it's well worth having the original version, too, as with the narration it's an excellent piece of modern noir (if you ignore the happy ending).

  14. Changed or not? on What's New in Blade Runner - The Final Cut? · · Score: 3, Insightful

From TFA: In the scene where Batty confronts Tyrell, the line, "I want more life, fucker" has been replaced with "I want more life, father".

I'm wondering if this is actually a change. In the original, it's a beautiful bit of ambiguity: Hauer slurs the word, so that it sounds halfway between "father" and "fucker", neatly summing up his feelings towards Tyrell.
If they've actually re-dubbed that, I'll be a little disappointed.

Oh well, Scott's still unlikely to mess things up as much as Lucas did ...

This immediately jumped to mind. My flatmate discovered that if you put the game CD into a CD player, it would play the soundtrack. It was pretty novel at the time, and had some neat, catchy string music.

The nearest I've heard to it in popular music is Brainbug's "Nightmare".

The other one people seem to be missing is Arcanum. That had some great chamber music in it.
