The digital revolution is having another effect that is going largely unnoticed. Due to the limited storage capacity of the flash memory media and the ability to preview the shot, auto-bracket and examine the results on the fly, a lot of unsuitable shots are culled immediately, deleted from the camera in the field.
The problem is that these "discards" often become "newsworthy" at a later date and are no longer available. For an example, do you think the photographer who took that famous shot of Clinton and Lewinski (she is wearing a goofy beret) months before the scandal broke, would have archived it if it hadn't been embedded in a roll of other more newsworthy (at the time) shots.
The problem is that the metaphors commonly used to teach atmospheric phenomena are wrong and lead to further misconceptions. You would probably have no objection to telling a student that the atmosphere acts like a sponge when it holds moisture?
Ok, now based on this metaphor, would moist air be heavier or lighter than dry air?
Gee, when my sponge gets wet it sure gets heavier, so moist air must be heavier than dry air.

It is physically impossible for a satellite to be orbiting in a figure 8 pattern. These birds are in inclined polar orbits. They circle the entire planet.
I have come across many students who have never heard of the "Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature" and were incapable of finding a book in the stacks after pulling up the computerized catalog listing. I get the impression that if they can't cut and paste, they aren't interested in the source.
I bought two ES units which croaked in less than a year - never saved the receipt so I took the loss and replaced them with a CS 500 that I bought at BJ's last week - it has a matching serial number:(
The SmartUPS 1400's we use at my office have been rock-solid - I guess they cut corners with their Home/Small Office lines.
After reading the reviews of the new ATI Radeon 9700 Pro cards, I took the plunge and invested the $375.00. I followed the instructions to remove all of my prior ATI drivers and installed the card. Unfortunately the driver cdrom that shipped with the card is corrupted. It consistently fails installing with checksum errors. While the latest Win2000 Catalyst drivers are on the web, the DVD and multimedia drivers are outdated and do not recognize my install CD serial number.
After a tedious email exchange with ATI support their final position is that the serial number from CD is insufficient proof of purchase. I need to supply a number which is located on the card and unreadable without reopening the case, dismantling the AGP support bridge and pulling the card. You would think they might mention "Write this number down before installing in case you need support later" somewhere in the installion instructions.
I told them if I had to pull the card out to get replacement drivers from them, then I might as well put the card back in the box it came in and exchange it for a Matrox. Screw ATI.
I remember in the early 80's there used to be an animated mural on the D line tunnel wall inbound to NYC right before the train crossed the Manhattan Bridge. They were set up on an abandoned station platform (Myrtle Ave?) and lit with small incandescent fixtures behind a slitted wallboard . They produced the same visual effect as a flip book or nickleodeon image.
I think the animations were dancing figures in a Keith Haring style but it has been a long time since I saw it....
I was working on a recently purchased refurbished Optiplex which came with pre-installed Win2k-Pro. I intended to maintain it as a dual boot Linux/MS and was using the Microsoft Update web page to bring the Win2k up to speed on Sevice Packs and security patches. Five hours and countless reboots later, I get down to the device driver part of the MS Update page. I update the onboard sound with no problem. Final patch is for the Intel HD controller. MS has detected that my controller driver needs an update. I install the MS patch and reboot.
As I'm sure you can guess, the result is --- BSOD: Cannot communicate with boot device. Fdisk to the rescue - so much for dual boot, I'll devote those 40 gigs to Linux : )
What would the average user do if MS had automatically installed that patch and left the computer unbootable???

BZZZT - wrong
Notice that this policy does not use the term "free" but rather "at the lowest possible cost to users."
This leaves the door open to a fee in the future.

ostentaciously ?
"Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)"Ostentatious Os`ten*ta"tious, a.
Fond of, or evincing, ostentation; unduly conspicuous; pretentious; boastful.
Perhaps you meant ostensibly ?

A diagram can be seen here.
Newton and Keppler must be doing figure 8's in their graves.
>and 1 doing a figure 8 over the the

This is wrong on so many levels - who modded this informative?

I found a link to the artist who did this NYC piece. There is a flash depiction of the animation - wow does this bring back memories.
