  4. Think Usability... on Agenda Linux PDA Finally Out · · Score: 2

(disclaimer: I am programming/use a Palm heavily these days; so I am biased)
I have used a Linux PDA before, saw a cheap knockoff unit at work a while back and I was completely unimpressed. A PDA is about being able to get to information quickly, not about being able to use an xterm (pterm?). I don't want to have to scribble in "cp ~mydir/foo.pdb /etc/foo2.pdb". I want to be able to use a quick and dirty UI that does it for me.
Also multitasking is totally useless in a PDA, just look at how slow they run when you have more than 1 app going. Why do you think the Palm is single threaded? (for all intensive purposes, I know you can hack this)
Summary: buy an m500 and enjoy an OS that doesn't get in your way, is designed for the system that it is on (from the ground up; not hacked to fit the system) and is simple / easy to use.
OTOH, if you have too much time/$$$ on your hands, buy a Linux PDA and be 'leet. Its your life.

I actually graduated from the University of Victoria (Victoria, BC, Canada) with a CS degree and an emphasis in Software Engineering. There has been a full blown Software Engineering degree available there for about 2 years now. The program teaches patterns, design methods, architecture, and all the other goodies one would expect.

Check it out if you wish. The program is actually quite good. It is getting crowded these days but I loved that school.

Sorry if I am hammering away on what may turn out to be a very nice film but we have to wait *2* freaking years before we *may* see this! I really don't care right now. Tell me when it is 2 *months* from the screen and then I will get excited.

Personally I am sick of hype for 2 years and then a final product that rarely stands a chance of standing on its own legs because of the "press machine".

  7. Vancouver suffers the same on Hacking The City · · Score: 2

I can fully see where JZ is getting this idea. In Vancouver we have an absolute dead zone when it comes to live music. Sure there is the Commodore, argueably the best live venue in North America, but beyond that we have nothing. One club an amazing night life does not make.

I believe that the only way to create the next wave of Rock n' Roll bands is too rebirth the small to medium size venues that the Nirvana's, Pearl Jam's, and Tea Party's started at(CanCon requires me to put one Canadian band; if you get this you know). These bands didn't start out playing stadiums and 30 000 person festivals.

If you don't want to be stuck with Generic Mass Marketed CRAP for music then you better start supporting the smaller club set and better yet go see a band that you have never heard of before; you might be surprised. The other alternative is Britney 2.0 and Back Street Boys Unplugged.
    Enjoy....

If you consider that every time a reviewer writes something that casts Linux in less than holy penguin light they will be attacked by more spam than a single mail order toner cartridge manufactuerer could dream of putting out. What would you do as a reviewer? Well, I think you light the holy penguin lamps.
Let's face it, Linux has a niche of dedicated deviants who have devoted themselves to unsanitary living conditions writing letters to the editor of the Moose Jaw Times informing them that the comparison of Windows telnet to Gnome Telnet was unfair due to the lack of the /2 switch in the Gnome command line.
It is negative reinforcement, if you post something bad about Linux you better have some decent mail filters or you will be up to your nipples in poorly written flames till next tuesday.
The way some people fanatically push Linux you have to wonder why people are hesitant.

  12. Hmmmmmm...Ethics.... on Review: Code of Ethics for Programmers? · · Score: 1

This is an interesting topic that I could expound upon till I turned blue; however, it can be summed up more easily in a nice little paragraph.
I go to UVic where they teach an "ethics" course. Now most the folks I have talked to agree on the following: its a floater course that you can get easy marks in if you just say what they want to hear. It may be an insightful course that makes you go "hmmm" but at the same time you may be considering a programming gig with a gambling/porn corp. The irony, no?
To coin a phrase, or re-phrase what someone may have said before me...

Ethics, you either got 'em or you don't; they can't be taught. Oh, and money can twist 'em.

  14. Slightly relevant, yet a wee bit off topic. on Feature: After the Red Hat IPO Ball is Over · · Score: 2

I have been watching the "Linux Explosion" for about 3.5 years now (strange as that is how long I have been using Linux...) and I can see why there is a fear of Wall Street.

Consider you are Joe C. Coder in 1997. You are gladly hacking away on xyz program. The community is solid (at least it seemed so from my point of view) and most people look at you with raised eyebrows if you mention Linux outside of a CSc lab.

Now fast forward a couple of years.

IBM, Oracle, Corel, etc, etc, etc are all pitching their hats (so to speak) into the bin. Great, they are adding to the code/community and it continues to improve. And ever so slowly the media start to latch onto this "Linux" thing.
Actually, the media caught on and THEN the corps came a-circling. small point there.

Now look at our happy little OS / community.

Ego, the type derived from 'net respect and not peer respect,is starting to appear; money is starting to drive. Remember the flames (yeah, like they are a thing of the past) in any discussion of GNOME vs. KDE?
The OS lives on, better than ever, HOWEVER the community aspect is starting to slip in the morales department. I have occasion to hang out on IRC and you see lots of "the newly christened" Linux newbiew happily singing the praises of the OS but if you so much as mention the "evil empire" of MS you will be on the hot end of some rather poorly constructed flame. These new folks just take as the gospel the mainstream media articles that support linux.
They dont bother to do any research to the reasons behind the comparisons. They just want to appear knowledgeable for the "street cred".

In essence these new "Linapostles" do more damage than good. It is great that they use Linux, it is foul that they just pick up the old school line of World Domination without actually knowing why. To defend Linux with kneejerk precision and flame any pundit that would dare condescend on their "holy" OS. The MS Windows evangelists are moving...to Linux. They have found a new podium to bang upon and the unclean (and loud!) masses are coming!! .

The reason I started using Linux was the great atmosphere; there were lots of intelligent discussions to read, never once did I have to trudge through ascii haxor text. I think the atmosphere is starting to cloud and this community that we all cherish, and I have enjoyed being part of, is slowly mutating...

    to a gang.

I hope that I am wrong.

    Hey hey campers.
I am happy to report a 100% successful test of mythII on a lowly p133/48MB on rh5.1 using the *2.0 executable.
The movement is a little choppy on occasion when there is too much going on and sometimes the camera doesn't respond to the keyboard, but I am sure that that is only my inexperience with camera control.
Overall I am extremely happy to see AOGBQ (any other game but quake) on Linux.
On a seperate note, I have played the game on an iMac before (for a short time) and the port is exactly the same.
I am incredibly impressed with the software renderer; same detail as the Mac version and I have nowhere near the power of the iMac I played it on!
And finally, I would like to note that on my now outdated GUS MAX sound card (basically useless in winXX) the sound quality was flawless. Man, I love Linux for its GUS support.
