  1. Use it as a media viewer on What To Do With a Free Xbox 360 Pro? · · Score: 1

I have all my music, movies and TV shows on a Linux server running TwonkyMedia which streams them. As long as the audio and video are encoded in a format that the 360 can decode, the 360 can see your TwonkyMedia server and play anything from it. I have a PS3 as well as a 360 Elite and both work excellently as a media center for Twonky. I actually play games on the PS3 as well and am looking to sell my 360.

  2. New catch phrase on AOL Fight Narrows To Two Players · · Score: 1

If Microsoft buys AOL, AOL's new catch phrase should be "The Worst ISP is Now Worser!"

  3. Re:Submitter new here (to America)? on What is the Tech Jobs Situation in Late 2004? · · Score: 1

I left Kent State in '94 and wen tot work for a consulting company for 5 years. That is what I would recomend to anyone fresh out of college. If you can find a consulting company that hires you as an employee and will put you on new projects every 6 months to a year at various client loactions, you really can get an idea of the working conditions that you like the best, and find a job like that later. I am now the webmaster for a medium sized manufacuring company and love it.

  4. Re:Time to cancel my netflix account on Tivo and Netflix Partner For DVDs on Demand · · Score: 1

Well I am a very happy hacked TiVo user, and have no problems at all paying the trivial $13 per month for TiVos service, adn I am also a very happy NetFlix customer. I am now emailing both of them to please do this, it sounds like a great idea. I'll even go an buy a new Series 2 TiVo if I have to to get this service (as long as I can hack it to :) ).

  5. Re:Get a degree but not in tech on Fewer Computer Science Majors · · Score: 0

I never completed my BS in CS and have never had difficulties in finding a good job. The computer industry is one of the few places where experience means more than education.

  6. Re:Cox does this... on Comcast Cuts Infected PCs' Network Connections · · Score: 2, Informative

Yup, Cox cut off my cable modem once for having port 25 opened for relay (shame on me, I did a temporary port forwarding to Cox's email server because my normal SMTP server was down, and forgot to un-forward it). I ended up talking to a good tech support person (the good ones are only available after normal business hours) and I fixed the problem, he port scanned me, and turned me back on.

  7. What about club.mp3search.ru on Exchange Rates Play With Online Music Prices · · Score: 1

club.mp3search.ru is a supposedly legit Russian MP3 site that charges only US$20 for 2 GB of downloads. Most albums are less than US$1 each, and most songs are less than a dime each.

  8. Experimental Breeder Reactor 1 on A Geek's Tour Of North America? · · Score: 1

The first nuke reactor that actually powered a city in Arco, Idaho. Google for EBR-1 for lots more info. Stopped by there a couple of years ago when driving from Cleveland, OH to Portland, OR. Interesting geek stop.

  9. Re:Good move on AOL Bans Mail From DSL-Hosted Servers · · Score: 1

I am in the process of switching to my own linux email server, instead of one of my hosting providers servers because it seams that every couple of months, they get on someone's spam black list and then I can't send email to some of my friends and colleages until they get around to changing the IP address of their mail server.

  10. Re:why? on DVD Region Encoding on Verge of Collapse? · · Score: 1

A coworker of mine was just in China on a business trip. He was able to buy the DVDs of Men In Black II and several other movies that are still in the theaters here for just a couple of US dollars each. The reason for this is that there aren't many movie theaters in China, so most movies are released direct to DVD over there. The MPAA et all don't want us to be able to buy these DVDs here untill the movie has been out of the theaters for a while and then they can stick us for $20 for them.
