Sure, return rates were really low for mass-mailed messages, but the fact is there were returns. Considering the low start up costs for spamming, the fact that you can expect SOME return justifies the effort.
Of course, the article really isn't applicable to commercial spam. I would be more willing to respond to a stupid question of a kid looking for a biology department than low mortgage rates, herbal Viagra or Britney's latest explicit video.
One thing I wonder -- what is the total emissions picture for operating this vehicle based on fryer food? One problem with the most common renewable energy source for gasoline engines -- ethanol -- is that you use almost as much energy in the conversion process that you gain from making the ethanol. How is vegetable oil made? Once use surpasses the amount reclaimed from food service, would it make economic sense to make vegetable oil just for vehicular use?
Wow, talk about things coming full circle. We had that once already -- remember the Commodore 64 and the Atari XLs? I know, they were marketed as full computers, and are quite useful in that role, but their RF output and ability to play killer games certainly didn't hurt sales.
"But Mom, it's not just a game machine, but it's also a COMPUTER! I can learn with it!"
Does anyone working for Lucas know the word "No?"

I'm convinced the only prerequisite to working for George Lucas is the ability to say, "yes sir, that is an excellent idea."
Great. Now Cue Cat is going to rise from the grave and sue this guy under the DMCA.
