He's known for works like, Once a Sodomite, Twice a Philosopher and other queer-studies materials. I'm a house DJ.
These are fairly strong differences, but I've had more than a few employers confuse me with him. In one case, I walked into an empty interview room to find this on the interviewer's monitor. He was quite shocked to see that I wasn't what/who he was expecting. I've had other potential employers respond with, "You're too old" or "How's your writing career," etc. It's a good ice-breaker, though.
Exactly. I've been using the Lite-On LTR-52246S (52x24x52x) CDRW drive ($79 through Dell.com) for over a month now with my Macintosh Powerbook through a Wiebetech firewire bridge. I use the commonly-available Imation blanks, and haven't had a coaster yet.
I was able to create a directory and move a directory of the same name into it. Bash is my default shell. Try the same thing in Bash.

..after about 11 months of using OS X.x exclusively. I've grown used to multitasking abilty of OS X, but in OS 9, the GUI never felt sluggish; regardless of hardware. At the same time, I found myself growing impatient while the foreground applicaiton (Digidesign Protools) in OS 9 prevented me from doing anything else on the system. In the end, I think OS X.2 (Jaguar) performs very well on my Powerbook 667. As others have said, the GUI performance is very solid under Jaguar, whereas the older versions of OS X suffered a bit.
There are a few things that I do to enhance my OS X experience. I work in Linux systems deployment for a software firm, and spend mucho time at the command line. I *do* think that the Apple Terminal application is a bit slow, so I use Eterm under XDarwin/Gnome for my terminal needs. My other suggestion is installing Launchbar. This program makes every command/application/document/etc. available by typing a few characters. It's highly configurable and allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard for just about every task.
These tools, plus the multitasking ability (versus OS 9's inability) allow me to be more efficient on OS X. Speed doesn't really matter as much, since I can still get my work done.
Oh, and here's a nifty screenshot that illustrates that productivity:)
I mean, I feel like I've been burned. My Powerbook G4 667/DVD purchased eactly one year ago has been in to Apple for repair FIVE times, and is still demonstrating problems. These are the common ones that are starting to affect current users. The paint delamination (and here) required three trips to the repair center.... it's beginning to surface again! I've had excessive heat issues (also see here) which also required replacement of the motherboard, heatsink and fan (three times) and the external casing. Methinks that the heat was a factor in the paint failure. There's also a VERY informative post on the paint issue on the Apple Discussion Boards.
To the best of my knowledge, Apple didn't change anything in the paint process for this ew crop of Powerbooks. Now that the well-documented problem is surfacing on the last revision of Titanium G4, I'm a bit wary about these new models.
Some are aware. None are paid. I once called a few labels to price the licensing costs for my box-set of CD's. It was slightly over $300,000..... but most of the labels said that they wouldn't even consider licensing a small-time DJ... or anyone that was producing less than 5,000 units..... the chicken and the egg.
Yeah, I should stick with "Ed White". I never felt right about the extravagant names, though. "DJ Croquet!"

eBay does have fixed-price sales now. It's been wonderful for me, as an "indie DJ". Granted, I can't make $15/disc, but I move a sh*tload at $5 each. People seem to enjoy work that's untainted by corporate record production.

Well, I've been selling my DJ mix CD's on eBay for several years now. My best seller is an 8-CD box set. Yes, these are CD-R's, as most duplication houses won't press *real* CD's in quantities of less than 1000. (Plus, this way, I have greater control over inventory) Of the 1500+ CD's I've sold in the past two years on eBay, only three buyers ended up with unplayable CD's. In those cases, I refunded their money or tried an alternative means of distribution (i.e. CD-RW discs that work in machines where CD-R's don't....or duplication at lower speeds). That's the right thing to do.

....and I've been selling my house mix CD's for over two years on eBay to VERY favorable reviews. I mix these live at home, or record live sets from my club gigs. I duplicate using CD-R's, since most duplication houses won't press REAL CD's in quantities of less than 1000 units.
I've never had an issue with eBay throughout all of this. I don't state explicitly in the auction listings that these are CD-R's. That's unnecessary information. It's all about the content at that point. I think their violation-detection process is poor. I've had auctions forcefully cancelled for using words like "ass" (as in "Funky-ass house mix CD") or using the real titles of some of the raunchier tracks I play. It happens, though.

Oh, I'd definitely pay for that. I'm a club/rave DJ, but used to play fraternity/sorority events in my college days. Lugging 11 crates of vinyl through dirty-ass frat houses was no fun.... especially, when 40% of that vinyl was bad music ("Sorostitute" music: Madonna, pop, etc.).
Having a hack for the iPod would be an excellent solution to last-minute tracks (for those of us that produce) and more convenient than CD's. I often play in venues where there are no DJ-oriented CD units; just Technics 1200's. I love my vinyl, but this would be excellent for extending my repertoire at live events.
Check them out. I'd hate for someone to fall into the mass-produced superstar (Bad Boy Bill, DJ Skribble, etc.) DJ mixes, when there's good small-name talent floating around.
I do the same work.... Web and database development.
Here's an example of the versatility offered by the Powerbook/iBook/OS X combination. I can run my shell scripts, PHP and Perl while retaining a GREAT UI and use my favorite editor, BBedit. I can graphically monitor my remote Unix systems and database server WITH X11 forwarding (I have XDarwin and Gnome running alongside the Aqua UI). And, I've added virtual desktops to the Aqua desktop. It's a good development platform.
I'm a slightly dissatisfied Powerbook G4 customer. While the Powerbook+OSX = an incredible development platform, and proves to be an incredibly-slick and versatile machine, I am concerned about its durability compared to the iBook.
I've owned my Powerbook G4 667MHz since November 2001. In March 2002, the paint on the unit began to bubble and flake-off.....like Herpes vesicles. The machine also began to generate a lot more heat than it did upon purchase. The battery life dwindled from a typical 3 hours down to 1.25 hours on a full-charge. The Powerbook's fan was always on. This was unacceptable for a $3200 laptop.
It took me a month of arguing with Apple and documenting my problem with photos before they would replace my defective unit. They denied any knowledge of widespread paint/durability problems, despite the existence of companies like TiPaint.com that sell touch-up paint for the Tibook. Touch-up paint for a laptop?!? That's absurd. Anyhow, my unit went in for a massive overhaul. They essentially gutted my machine and placed it in a new case, replaced the battery, fan and logic board. It took several weeks, since the critical parts were back-ordered (signs of a more widespread problem). I really wanted a replacement because my unit was a lemon. Instead, they "repair" it.... and create more problems. The paint is beginning to flake again, and I have reason to believe that the processor is not attached to the heatsink (constant fan, paint falling off, poor heat dissipation).
Problem is, us Mac users are SO dependent upon our machines for our respective livelihoods, that being without our computer for another repair of indefinite-length is killer. Having to fight with Apple to even get to the repair stage is a big enough deterrent for most users, reducing us to using crippled machines out of desperation....
