  1. Re:Population density on What's Holding Up Broadband in the U.S.? · · Score: 1

Well, your at least close with all but one of those... I happen to live in Delaware and its about as big as the little half of one of those Pacific islands people always get stranded on, plus the fact that almost all of those nearly 800,000 are in the northern part of the state where it is basically nothing but suburbia. For the other though I would assume that the majority of the state's population center's around urban areas. (Don't have any statistics though... just an assumption.)

Well, it depends on where you go. I work at an FYE (aka Saturday Matinee, The Wall, Record Town... same company and I've worked for them all) where the official policy is that any hardware issues with game systems is the responsibility of the manufacturer and not ours. This is understandable as the margins on game systems are next to nothing and its not worth more losses in terms of time and effort excluding the fact that the company probably is reimbursed for defective merchandise. Now that's not to say that we don't always refuse a return, pretty much that depends on the manager on duty and the circumstances.

Also, on a completely side and off-topic note... I just found out that FYE's parent company TWEC just signed a major deal with MSN to become its provider of music and movies location. Also we will be getting a number of kiosks for previewing movies and music on, each one running XP... shoot me now, please. So now I am part of the evil empire. I can use a Mac, refuse to fix my roommates horrible Compaq, but MS will find some way to get you. *sigh*

Its worth checking out each of the sites respective products page to see how they each are approaching this this new field.

This is perhaps what struck me the most of all in the article as it speaks to all the naiveté that creates problems like the Monsanto Dump or Love Canal. THe point he tries to make is akin to saying, "Hitler or Stalin did some pretty bad things, but that was fifty years ago and times were different!" ...as if no one noticed Milosevic or the Khmer Rouge or Rwanda. To write off the past as something that can't be repeated due to our "advanced sensibilities" is to write the same past into our futures.

Its somewhat ironic that the drop is happening now, just as getting a domain name is cheaper and easier than ever before. I remember lot too long ago when I went to register my first domain name (www.instinctdesign.com) and the only option was Network Solutions at a wonderful 70 dollars a pop for the first two years. Since the break-up of that particular monopoly I have registered a number more for only ten dollars a year and if you buy in bulk (thank you, I'm not that nuts) it can get even cheaper prices. Odd though that the new TLDs only got a passing mention, sure was a lot of whoopla over what seems to have turned out to be... well, not much.

Just looking around online, I was able to find a bit more info about the subject. One good read (well, actually a number of good reads) I found was from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's 2000 Annual Report. There are a number of articles that are worth checking out, but I would recommend the one entitled "Brain-Wiring Receptor Shows Extraordinary Diversity." Here is a brief quote:
Researchers have identified a new axon guidance receptor found in the tips of growing neurons that can exist in more than 38,000 slightly different forms. The unprecedented diversity of proteins derived from this single gene may offer an important hint that a fundamental code directs the precise wiring of trillions of neurons in the brain...
Also, an interesting, abet rather short, article from Popular Mechanics tells how researchers were able to actually "see" neurons changing at the synapse between two of the tens of million of nerve cells in the brain of a rat.

I was able to find a few images of mars, this one here is particularly good. In terms of color it seems fairly ok to me, though the other color references are a bit limited. Also, a basic overview of Raleigh Scatter for those who are interested can be found at www.people.cornell.edu/pages/eac26/RaleighScatteri ng.html. A quick quote from it, Have you ever seen a brilliant red sunset? After all of the colors have scattered out of the white light, we see the oranges and reds. Where on the horizon are the red colors found? The reds are found close to the horizon because the sunlight must pass through many particles before we reach the point that red is scattered out. So if the atmosphere of Mars is particularly dusty for instance then you'd get a more red hue (at least if I'm reading this right), making the Mars sky closer in hue to a reddish color.
