Our collective sense of humor has taken some serious nicks and dings from current events, so a mildly amusing aside from GB gets blown into a 'much ado about nothing' firestorm.
Why am I not surprised?
Non-techy types aren't allowed to infiltrate the circle of geek coolness: We won't laugh at your jokes 'cause you haven't paid your bit-byte dues...
OK, let's really try to get this straight here: ( sum of first N primes, after Leibnitz ) ( N^2 + N )/2
for large n ( or any non-trivial n ), N^2/2is a reasonable crude approximation but Certainly NOT!!! N^2 when in doubt ( but only as a last resort ) try some REAL NUMBERS:
"The H1B worker is going to drive to work on the roads I paid for, be protected by the police my property taxes support. receive justice from me sitting on a jury for $11 per day, and be protected from having all his property taken from him by my arms"
"Don't you folks get it? H1-B WORKERS PAY MEDICARE, SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES IN ADDITION TO REGULAR TAXES. WORSE, THEY CANNOT BENEFIT FROM THE MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES THEY PAY."
*We* get it. You don't.
The services listed, police & fire protection, local public schools, roads, etc. are NOT paid for by "social security" "medicare", etc. The come out of federal, state, and municipal income taxes, the exact taxes that aren't covered for the first 5 years of the subject contracts.
It is NOT a symmetrical arrangement, as any US citizen working overseas can tell you.
I'll buy the idea that most other nations, especially India, Pakistan, South Africa, Nigeria, et. al., are delighted to "import" substantial amounts of hard currency, and build up an information technology infrastructure.
And the talent isn't 'exported' permanently, for the most part: once they've milked the H1B workers for lots of high-productivity code at below-market prices ( which the suits can easily due, because of the 'captive audience' factor ), they can just squeeze down the wages and cut benefits until the 'guest workers' throw in the towel and go home. Then, just sign off on another 'scare skill-set' waiver, and bring in a fresh batch of wannabes. A double disgrace and a shame, that exploits and demeans both domestic and foreign employees.
If m$ problems have taught us anything about the dangers of monoculture environments, it is that they are breeding grounds for 'disease': malware, virii, worms, etc. If Linux distros are pared down to a few, well-differentiated families, as 'conventional' BSD/Sys V/Posix systems have been, with vendors like Sun, HP, and IBM staying out of direct compatibility with each other, won't there be a more healthy environment?
Port-ability at the re-compile level, good. Object code compatability, bad. Would more clearly delineated differentiation have stopped things like the Morris worm? Do systems need to be so incompatible that they are no longer interoperable?
Hmmmmmm.....tastes just like chicken.
Can you say: "Kleenex", "Trampoline", "Jello", "Escalator", "Nylon", "Thermos", "Band-Aid", (and the list goes on)?
When a term falls into common usage, and becomes part of the language, a Trade Mark can become unenforceable, not just from a practical standpoint, but legally as well.
Is it fair? Probably not. Does it happen? See list above.

Oh, yeah, I did say written contract, as in legal recourse if and when appropriate.
