New and improved site. Wow, they think this is an improvement? The old site was not great, but it appeared to be a little better. This "new and improved site" is one of the most horrid sites I have ever seen. Was it done by a third grader? Viewing the source, I see it was made with Microsoft FrontPage 5.0. Probably one of the cops did it at home in his/her spare time. They should have spent a few bucks and hired someone with a little graphical abilites.

This story is weird. I think the guy had some hopes on getting rich quick off the tax payers. However, I do not think it was a severe as the sheriff's office is making it out to be. I don't know the costs of hosting a site. So what would 3.5 million hits per month for three years run for your average hosting site? $300,000? That sounds a little steep to me. Maybe it was a dedicated host, which would add to the cost.

These charges seem like overkill. If your not happy with the deal, then drop the charges in exchange for the hostname and old site content. I am sure the guy would rather go for that then possible jail time on bogus charges. What a litigious society we live in now adays.

Why in the world would I trust my personal information to some closed source application made by a proprietary company? What is to stop MS from having my personal data sent to their servers for "annonymous" collection for stats? It may sound paranoid, however this is ones personal information, and should not be trusted to a company that has shown such low ethics as MS has over the years.

Your next step is to switch your pop to Linux if he doesn't require any MS specific application. If Linux is not an option then download AVG Anti-Virus. There is a free version for personal use that comes with an Outlook Express plugin to scan incoming/outgoing email. I also would put Kerio Personal Firewall on your pop's computer. How many of you have helped out at a Homeless shelter or soup kitchen? Donated clothes/etc to the Salvation Army? Helped the Big Brothers or Big Sisters? Helped out Habitat for Humanity? Or thousands of other things one can do to help their fellow humans? I have, and the look on peoples faces when I help them with no selfish intentions is worth 1,000's to me. I just recently helped a co-worker setup a new computer. I saved her a lot of money by building a new computer and using some of her old parts. I gave her a spare 20GB HDD and a video card. I refused payment. Why? Because I wanted to help. Not because I wanted money. She still thanked me and gave me 4 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. That meant more to me then her handing me an impersonal check.

I have a 2 1/2 year old girl, should I start to charge her for my time, since "time is money"? Of course not, I would not trade my time with my little angel for any amount of money.

Now, I can think of thousands of ways to make money in a world where the majority of software is free. I think a balance can be met between free software and pay software. What I do not want to accept is proprietary software. I am a developer for a fortune 500 that does a few billion a year in sales and non of it comes from selling software. This company and hundreds of thousands of other companies in the world need software developed in-house. That requires hiring programmers to build custom applications. Most purchased software are too generic for companies and those companies want to tweak those apps, build extensions or develop complimenting applications. Most companies do not want to fit their business to sofware and instead want software to fit their business. So there will always be a strong need for sofware developers. The only issue that could hurt software developers is not Open Source, but out sourcing.

One other point, why do closed minded people like Clemens Vasters still think that you cannot sell Open Source software? MySQL, JBoss, Red Hat, SuSE, Ximian and others are doing it. What is required for a company to make money with Open Source is a for that company to trully add value. In a world where most of the software is Open Source, companies will once again have to innovate and create value. And that scares a lot of people.

What world do you live in? You make it sound as if OSS is always one step behind? There are tons and tons of OSS software that are leaps and bounds ahead of proprietary software. What is the #1 webserver? Apache. It blows away any webserver put out by MS. Have you ever heard of python? How about Mozilla/firefox? Oh, and how do you think you were even able to find /.? That is right, a little OSS app called bind that powers the top level domain servers. Without bind, we would not have a very friendly internet right now. Have you ever heard of MySQL? PostgreSQL? The majority of the webs email is still sent using Sendmail. Let us not forget about JBoss. I could go on and on about top-notch OSS software. Even MS uses OSS GPLed software in their Windows Services for Unix stuff. Intall SFU and see the great big GPL notice while you install. It is actually kind of ironic/funny to install some MS software and see a great big GPL notice, especially after hearing how MS said the GPL is a "cancer". Sorry champ, OSS is not lagging behind any proprietry software. You can even go on sourceforge.net now and get tons of OSS for MS Windows. I am sure that does not make MS or the other proprietary companies happy.

It is not like basement rats write OSS. It is professional develpoers like myself that make OSS. We work for companies during the day, and write software at night that we enjoy. The difference is that during the day we work for money and at night we are driven by a passion for development.

You will no longer be able to uninstall it just like you cannot uninstall IE now. You need to think of the average Joe. He plugs in his peecee and uses what is there. MS knows that and that is why they "integrate" things and it gives them an instant monopoly. Do you really want all media to be some closed MS format only? Do you really want them controlling what you can do with media? If MS is allowed to control the media market, then you will need to by MS Windows. Look at how MS use to offer IE for Mac. Once IE became the major browser, MS practically stopped developing IE on the Mac. You can get IE 5 for the Mac. IE 5 is old and sucky.
