They call out that they work with their own stuff knowing that everyone will make the assumption it will work with other b/g solutions out there. You just need to look at whether the equipment has a WiFi certification logo.

However, I am a developer who works with Wireless on a daily basis. Our testing here has shown some very significant problems with certain access points and cards. For example, one vendor's access point responds to probe requests for a particular network by responding when they are not the network that should be responding. This can prevent some cards from being able to switch to a particular ad-hoc network in the presence of this access point.

Basically laptop A says "Who is on network foo?"
Bad access point responds, "I'm on bar!"

From the testing we've done here, there are definately certain vendors that I would avoid like the plague for WiFi equipment.

Apple's stuff works OK. The problem with the Apple equipment is generally that they follow the standard exactly and don't always work the way the user would like when other equipment is misbehaving. But from a technical perspective its not Apple's fault. At user level, sometimes the problems manifest themselves on the Mac.

They are not the only vendor that behaves like that. Other vendors sometimes have problems in the presence of malfunctioning equipment too.

If you did stick with an Apple-only solution, you wouldn't have any problems.

Other brands I think are pretty good are Cisco and NetGear.

Up until 1993 I was an Atari user. I bought an Atari 800 in 1979. In 1981 the IBM PC was introduced. My family all piled into the car and we went to a computer store to look at it with the intention of possibly buying it. IBM had a good reputation and we thought they might have a better computer. After checking the technical specs and using the machine, we decided that the Atari 800 we already had was a superior computer. The Atari had good color graphics, basically the same storage options, and about the same amount of memory, and more software available.

I continued to use my Atari system all through the 80s. In 1993, I needed a new computer and had intended to buy an Atari ST. However, my local Atari computer store was no longer selling them and they were basically not competitive computers any more. So, I looked at my options and bought Macintosh PowerBook 160. At the time PowerBooks were the best selling laptops in the world and Apple was the #1 computer company on the planet. Buying a Mac was not a bad choice although it wasn't exactly a "no brainer".

In the past 11 years, I've never had a reason to change platforms. There was never a time when Windows was enough better than the Mac to justiy the hassel of chainging platforms. The switch to OS X was not a big deal - I transitioned while 10.2 was current.

Today I have several PowerBook G4 and iBook systems running MacOS X. I have used Windows, but it seems klunky to me and I see no compelling reason to switch.

Once you have the root account setup, you can log into the computer as root through the graphical login interface and then you are, in fact, root.

To do this, first enable the root account via NetInfo Manager application. (Applications/Utilities). In 10.2, you choose "Enable Root User" from the Security menu. Then you have to set a root password. It is similar in 10.3. Then, at the login window, you choose "Other" and then type "root" as the username along with the root password. Presto, you are now logged in as root. I do this all the time when I need to setup something (such as installing headers for a private framework, etc.)

Yeah, he's hosed because his ISP controls all the laws, the courts, and the jails. I'm sure glad we elected his ISP to congress so that its contracts were now binding criminal law. You always get thrown in jail if you violate the terms of some contract written by an ISP. Besides, the guy can not be found by a court to be a common carrier because the ISP defined him as not being one right there in its contract. No judge could ever rule otherwise since obviously the ISP would just throw the judge in jail if he ruled that way.
