I just moved. When I was living in an area that was kind of far out of town, I did not have cell coverage at my house. Now, we just moved and we do. So, no landline phone! My wife and I just use our cell phones. Of course, we still have our old numbers which are in a different area code. That freaks people our when we order pizza.

We used to have cable modem and used 802.11b for the past few years. Now, we have a neighbor who has a wireless network called "Linksys" with no WEP key set. So, we don't pay for internet anymore either. I suppose the day they put a wep key on it or shut it down, I will order either cable or DSL (we actually can get either where we live.)

We still have to pay for our cell phones and for electricity, but we're saving like $200 a month without phone or broadband. (Math check: Our old cable company wouldn't sell us broadband without digitial cable and the total price was like $100 a month. Plus, phone bill including long distance since the cell phones wouldn't work from the house and all our relatives live in other states.)

There was a time when Republicans were for a balanced budget. Now you get them saying things like "deficits don't matter", cutting taxes while increasing spending and increasing the federal government's overall size.

I think their real agenda must be that they want to bankrupt the country so that we have to end social security which will prevent a lot of people from retiring and force people to invest money with big investment firms owned by Republicans.

I fear that their policies will actually result in the collapse of the US Federal Government.

The democrats used to be a party of big taxes and big government, but under Clinton looked to ME like a party of more responsible spending.

Ross Perot was right in that the national debt is a hugely important issue and needs to be addressed. I voted for him in 1992 for that reason despite knowing that he was a kook. I voted for Clinton in 1996 because it became apparent that the Democrats are more reasonable on economic issues that the Republicans.

A physicist wouldn't help. Try an experimental psychologist.

The reason why you can project black onto a white screen has to do with the way the brain interprets colors. There was a famous experiment where a subject is put into a black room, a circle of white light is projected onto a black wall. The circle appears white. Then, the experimenter inserts a white piece of paper into the circle. Now, the paper appears white and the circle appears black. He removes the paper, and the circle appears white again.

Perception of white/black is caused by the contrast between areas, not the total number of lumens.
