    "An individual was illegally detained"

    leads to....

"Everything here worked. You are not allowed to be held without charge, even if you are suspected terrorist."

    ??

I guess my point is the liberty lost is that you can be detained for years "illegaly", and then if you want to be released (keep in mind you should have never been detained in the first place) you have to renounce your citizenship and vow to never to return to the country. Oh, and most of that time, you were in solitary confinement and were not given access to a lawyer or a hearing to argue your case.

Interesting that you chose three as the threshold for acceptable removal of liberties. I guess as long at they take them one at a time, that is okay?

Here is one for starters (NY Times Article)

My Summary: The US incarcerates incommunicado one of it's most (allegedly) dangerous citizens, ostensibly to make the US safer, for over two years. Then when told by the Supreme Court they would have to prove why he was dangerous (due process), they choose to release him instead.

Now, if the fact that the government can detain a you for years without ever filing a charge in court or proving any cause for holding you doesn't disturb you, then I guess you have nothing to worry about. (Not to mention how it seems to me the US govt. knows the person was being held without cause...if he was so dangerous how can they release him?)

  3. Re:What about Rhapsody, aka listen.com? on Comparing Online Music Offerings · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just tried this. It looks like it can only create playlists for mp3s that I imported into the iTunes library. Is there a way to create playlists for music that I have not purchased or ripped myself?

If so, then I would consider switching from Rhapsody.

To me, it is worth $10 / month to be able to make playlists of (almost) the entire Rhapsody library and not have to pay $1 for every song. I probably listen to about 500 songs per month, 80% of which I probably won't ever listen to after 6 months.

Also the custom radio station is more appealing to me, so if I enter Wilco, Flaming Lips, Cursive, etc... I get to hear songs by them along with similar sounding bands (not just the bans I etnered). I also do not need to buy the songs by these artists or import their music files. It looks like in iTunes I can only listen to pre-defined radio station streams.

If iTunes has these capabilites, would somebody be kind enough to explain how? I would be quite grateful.

I also am a huge fan / customer of Rhapsody. I also tried out iTunes when it came out, and it doesn't look like there is any way to build playlists or play tracks "on demand" as I can with Rhapsody. Also, Rhapsody has superior radio stations, and I can build custom radio stations based on entering a sampling of artists. Perhaps iTunes has these features, but I am not aware of them.
Another thing Rhapsody does it create a featured playlist / mix each weeek on the main page.

  5. Listen.com/Rhapsody? on Review of iTunes Music Store · · Score: 1

I've been using listen.com for a few weeks now and love it. For $10/month (there is also a $5 option) I can stream loads of music, create playlists, radio stations based on aritsts I like, etc.. Their logic to predict other songs I would like is pretty good. They have a pretty good selection (still can't get some indie artists I like, but most big names are there). And for $.99/track I can burn the songs to CD. I don't know if they have it for Macs or not, but I can't say enough good things about it.

For many applications (text editing, etc...) keyboard-only makes a lot of sense, but when I am surfing the web, I basically have to use the mouse to navigate to links (Try tabbing through a page with about a hundred links to get to the one you want). So using mouse gestures makes a lot of sense to me.

I'm all for fair use...make a copy of a CD for my family, etc... but the fact is downloading every movie available on kazaa (and in turn re-serving them up for others to download) can hardly be considered anything but piracy.
Most of the arguments I see on slashdot are rationalizations of why it is okay to steal music, software, etc...
Maybe instead of spending $400 every 2 weeks for the baddest mofo video card, you buy the stuff you are ripping off, and then copyright holders would back off their crazy countermeasures b/c there's no need.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I've downloaded music off the net just like most everybody else...but i'm not gonna complain when it's not possible to do something I really didn't have the right to in the first place.
    stop whining!
