  2. Home Depot sells crappy wood to home owners and contractors that just need a little framing material right away to finish something and can take the time to root through the rocking chair parts they sell as framing lumber.

Real contractors order stud bundles from real building supply houses that don't cater to the home owner DIY crowd.

  3. A few helpers have remarked, "This is an actual 2x4. Wow, you don't see that every day -- how about that!"

You see it if you work on old houses. I've worked with 2x4s, 2x3 1/2s and 1 1/2 x 3 1/2s over the years. Anyone who complains about modern 2x4s is a moron.

  4. I'd absolutely take that bet if there any way to collect. I've built and remodeled homes on and off for 40 years.

I've worked on homes that spanned the entire age range under discussion.

I've worked on homes that had the original 2x4s. They used lath and plaster to correct the worst of the wall variances. Later on the mills started planing the front and back to allow uniform wall depth and then later planing the sides to make the studs MUCH easier to use. That 4 sided planing allows studs to be attached to each other in consistent ways, i.e., sides to fronts and produce uniform results.

The need to maintain existing inventory alone will keep the standard, well, standard.

  5. A house that is built correctly, e.g., with a sound foundation, and maintained will last almost forever. However, stop maintenance and the structure immediately begins to succumb to entropy. Here is a rather touching tale of that process. There will come soft rains

I was a building and remodeling contractor prior to getting into I.T. I worked on 100+ year old houses many times.

This is self-evidently false. If nobody cares, why is so much effort put into fighting LGBT equality? If nobody cared, when we asked for marriage equality, the response would have been, "yeah sure, whatever, we don't care".

But this exactly the response of a lot of people I know, i.e., I really don't care. I'm not going to oppose same sex marriage and I'm not going to go to rally's to support same sex marriage. There are literally so many issues in the world that are important to someone that one can't be passionate about them all.

  15. Re:How about more seating space instead? on Your Face or Fingerprint Could Soon Replace Your Plane Ticket (washingtonpost.com) · · Score: 1

"How about give us more space on the planes ... ?" Blame capitalism and efficient markets. If people buy airplane tickets by choosing the cheapest prices, the airlines will provide the cheapest prices. If that means standing-room only, you're getting exactly what you paid for.

And that's all I ask of any retail transaction. I fly to Europe from the Midwest 2-3 times a year. My last flight from Paris was in a microscopic seat with a video screen only slightly larger than my phone.

But I paid less that $500 for the round trip. I looked at that $500 in 1980 dollars and it came to about $158. It's gotten cheaper over the years as it's gotten more crowded.

If you want cheap, you get cheap. If you are willing to pay more, you get more room. I like having options.

By shilling for Hillary. He screwed up big time originally by unilaterally declaring her innocent because she didn't "intend" to do wrong. Not his job. When an FBI investigation is ordered, the agents make report to the grand jury who then determines whether to proceed with an indictment or not.

Comey took an almost unprecedented action by stopping that and declaring that there was "nothing to see here, move along". According to my retired FBI friend that was shocking. In his and his network of retired agent friends, opinion, enough agents had the balls to confront Comey about this outrageous behavior and force him re-look at the charges. He still screwed that up. If he had simply let the machinery run, Hillary would have been vindicated by the grand jury if she was innocent. I believe this was a frantic effort by the justice department to prevent just that.

Comey and the AG had a long working history including her dropping investigations of companies on which he served as a board member before being appointed FBI director.
