The politicans just want a scapegoat for the violence they see in schools. THey blame video games becuase its easy and noone really understands anyway.. but why are politicans trying to pass a bill? in fact why would politicans do anything? Its becuase they get alot of pressure from people who actually take the time and write to them, complaining. in this case politicans got a lot of letter from ignorant angry americans who just want to se something done more then actually finding the real cause or taking and real responsibitly for their actions. these same ignorant americans are probably the same ones that use proxy parenting, "if the government says its good, then my children should be seeing it"
As you've seen, slashdot is noticed and heard. It can become a real political powerhouse if everyone who disagreed with the governemt actually wrote to their senators (americans that is) its as easy as printing your comment and mailing it to your favoirte senator, or assemblymen. (snail mail becuase no one really takes e-mail seriously)
isnt there a way i can just pay the artists?

Isnt there some way where i can pay the artists directly for the music i download? I would send cash to the artists of the music that i download. why should i pay those ridiclous prices for cd's, cases, booklets and other useless things that i dont need. the artists should set up a system in which i can do that, and screw the giant media companies.
and downloading music from artists that no longer benefit from them (ie dead artists). who does that hurt? Im talking about classical like bach and mozart.
What everyone on slashdot is saying is that the comparasion is unfair, and therefore making it misleading, this is just another example of how to make statistics lie for you. No one is denying the problems with linux.
Bitching and moaning on slashdot about whatever the government does that you dont like isnt going to amount to anything. THe problem is everyone seems to voice their opnion here instead of where it counts, to their senators! I bet if the the enitre slashdot community actively protested to their senators about the DMCA, it wouldnt have passed. why dosnt everyone put all their efforts into actuallu voiceing their opinions to the government instead of crying about it here.
how many of you have actually written to your senators protesting anything? thought so.
THe whole point of our American Government is that its a government thats for the people. Now if the only people that activly participate in our government those "ignorant" ones, then your going to get laws that are "ignorant" becuase thats all the government is hearing from its people.
C'mon slashdot! put your comments where it counts! write to your senator!
hmm but why does th Korean government have to spend its 1.2mil for top programmers so that the rest of the open source community can beneifit. it may be win,win for them and the open source community. But why should the Korean Government have to absorb the enitre cost? If i were the Korean Governemtn and spent a large sum of money hiring the best programmers out there, i would not simply give it [the software] all away. While the Open source movement is indeed noble, It is not what people are gonna want to do. people are inherently greedy and that is why communism failed.
am i comparaing open source to communisim? you decide.
all i am trying to say is that i just dont see how you can make real money in open source. espically video games.
so then is software a product or a service? if it is a service you could potentially make money, if it is a product, then i doubt you could do as well as MS did developing software.
And if great open source software could be achieved simply with large sums of cash, and have a large payoff then why hasn't it happened already?
Open source succeeds only becuase there is a group of dedicated individuals who work very hard and concentrate more on quality and then profits, unfortunatly most of the world likes profits more.
what about all of us who are non religious, and dont give a rats ass about christmas or anything? i dont see any problem working on christmas, in fact i went to a chinese restruant today and they were packed, the holidays are the busiet time for them and they dont care if its christmas or not.
holidays are for those who believe in them. if you dont, then what difference does it make?
It dosnt matter whether piracy is right or worg, its agaisnt the law, and therefore need to be prosecuted. Microsfot has to prosecute software pirates. if no one does anything about it, then why bother with a law on it? it would be utterly meaningless. People have to be reminded about the value of their software. if everyone could get their software for free with out consequences then what incentive would software developers have? Well except for the open source comminuty, but im talking about business suites, CAD programs, graphics desgin.
I espcially hate the fact that i have to use windows beucase the software that i require only runs on windows. I hate having to only be able to use word becuase thats the only program everyone else uses. and i hate the fact that if i want to play a computer game im most likly going to have to have windows to play with it. never-the-less i cant call M$ a bad guy for going after software pirates, nor can i call any other company bad for going after software pirates, it needs to be done so long as the law exists. No matter what anyone says about it being right or wrong its still piracy, and you have to be willing to pay the price if your going to do it. Piracy is not an effective way to get things to change in the whole software world. Competition is. and thats why the M$ monolopy is so bad, and why the US government should stop dragging their feet on it.
DO college's count, becuase here at The Cooper union most of the stuff we run is Win95 and Red Hat Linux. Mostly becuase this school does not charge tution, does it see the value in running Free software like Linux. They've made it work rather well. and espcially since all the computers are at least 5 years old.
