You seem to think wind turbine repairs are as simple and inexpensive as a dishwasher repair, ignoring the fact that the "dishwasher" is located on a remote ride, we'll outside of town, about 250-300 feet in the air.
You didn't really drill into why this is a problem. Even if it costs $10000 to repair, and that fix keeps it generating $10001 dollars, then it's worth doing.
So unless you got some numbers, I'm going to assume it is exactly lie a dishwasher, car, or coal power plant....
but we could have told Japan that they could keep all their shit and promise not to attack our interests in the South Pacific again to end the war and they probably would have gone for it.
Oh ok. Well probably sounds good enough for me to risk another global war and millions of lives....
Actually, composites are horribly difficult to recycle. The only way to really reuse them is to find something to do with them that doesn't involve modifying them at all. And I don't know if you've seen a wind turbine blade up close, but they're [slightly] similar to a surfboard. It's just horribly inconvenient to do anything with that.
Re-using blades seems like the obvious choice. Why pay new price for a new wind generator if someone has second hand ones going for cheap?
I quote "For example, the copper in the wires used to transmit power from the turbine to the grid will have to be stripped of its plastic insulation, a task which would entail serious labor costs." Now tell me that doesn't sound like utter BS disingenuous facts twisting.
I have a guy around here who will come and collect any old cables you have because the value of the copper is more than the cost of recycling it.
So yeah, complete BS.
Whilst it might be a promising contribution to global health (Hey, I'm an Australian), it's the other 20% we need to worry about. One step forwards, two steps back.
What is the two steps back? Or is this one of those things where you have no idea but want to there to be a negative angle anyway?
So this year the population is down 80%, the next year it'll be down another 60%... but the following year 100% of the mosquito population will be immune, and there will be 10000% more of them because the bird population decreased 80% from starvation. To challenge nature on it's own terms is generally futile in the long run.
That explains why we are now over run with dinosaurs...
And there's always people who think they deserve a "cut" of it. Even if they don't.
Obama already addressed your point in his 'You Didn't Build That' speech. Even the most successful business relies on public infrastructure and service to function so those who benefit the most should contribute the most.
Let's not forget Norway is by far one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in. Those 460,000 kroner (around $56,200) won't last nearly as long as you think.
Quality costs more. I also live in an expensive country, and I prefer that to a country where things are really cheap but you could be homeless at the whim of your corporate overlord.
That is socialism and it is theft, that is what is happening there. All of these social safety nets, income taxes, property taxes, all of this theft, which I am against, Norway is using it to prop up inefficiencies that lead to this perception discussed in the story. This is theft and wealth dissipation.
Criminals! They should do what they do in America instead and have heaps of homeless people and violent crime. That's the freedom we all aspire to...
From TFA "Elon Musk’s engineering team is set to arrive in Thailand on Saturday... The Thai government confirmed the timeline for Musk’s group in a Facebook post."
Sounds like an invite was extended to me. They don't just let anyone get involved with these types of things.
You made a suggestion, a reasonable one to ask - why can't they dig them out - and I explained why they couldn't,
None of those explanations were a blocker though, which is what I responded with. We also both agree that we let the experts do their thing, so why do you claim that some expert shouldn't be allowed at the table?
because you didn't realise boring machines were so big and heavy.
You didn't realise that Elon had more potential solutions than just boring machines...
where the things I said have come to fruition and proven true.
Dive rescue was always Option A, that was never in question. But congratulations for claiming the idea as your own. How proud you must be of yourself...
What do you want to do? Keep arguing against proven reality now at this point?
You've made it clear you don't get the concept of an options analysis. But if you need to keep going I have time.
But anyway, what is it with Americans and needing things explained to them?
Castaway was a great example of this. I thought the bulk of the movie was great, the lack of lines and conveying messages via unspoken action was refreshing for a Hollywood movie. Then the scene where he is derelict at sea on the raft and the cargo ship finds him should've been the cue for the credits, but no. They went back to civilisation and have him explain everything that just happened for all the stupid people that didn't get it. It ruined an otherwise great movie.
This is not about being impressed. The message is , if you want to signal a degree of financial security then it's worth stretching to an iPhone. Others don't need to be impressed, just aware.
As GP said this ain't 2007. Every single person I know has a flagship phone of roughly the same value as an iPhone, even teenagers.
I see a lot of signalling around me, mostly understated. Then it's 'signalling that you don't need the signalling'.
Flagship phones are available on plans for less than $20/week so everyone has one now, even a ditch digger or the girl holding the stop/go sign at road works. This signal has been meaningless for at least 5 years...
Yes. I know plenty of people in the top quartile, and none of them own Bentleys.
If you want to determine if a randomly selected person is in the top 25% by income, asking if they own a Bentley would be a very poor discriminator.
iPhone is also bad since about half of population own an Android device. I can only speak for my experience in IT circles where everyone is in the top quartile and almost no-one has an iPhone
I know a better way: owning a Ferrari is definitely even more precise! I am pretty sure the correlation for Ferrari -> rich is close to 100%.
And on my one person sample (me), it's 100% more accurate since I don't own an iPhone (yuck!) but do have a Ferrari (albeit an old one.)
Where I live an iPhone on a plan is less than $20/week, hardly a good marker for wealth. My teenage kids have them which I make them pay for themselves and they make less than $100 week and all of their friends are in the same boat.
My marker for wealth/income which is a little more accurate is owning multiple properties, or a luxury vehicle ($100k+). There is no way to fake owning a house...
I'm not the one pretending Musk has a magic unicorn that can fix everything in the world. I'm the one pointing out the experts are already there,
You pointed out that dive experts are there which I agreed with. I merely argued that TFA is about the Thai gvot asking Musk for advice is prefectly legitimate request for other possible options of which Musk has access to other experts in different fields.
The magic unicorn claim is in your head and says more about you than anyone else.
I can also point out now that there's a reason the experts now have 8 kids out by NOT using your plan.
It's not my plan, TFA reported that the Thai Govt initially looked into multiple options one of which was a dive rescue, others included digging them out. Any responsible planning would investigate all options even if Options B, C and D don't get used. The way you make the decision on Option A is by exploring option B, C and D and ruling them out based on expert advice of ALL options.
You can try and make it personal all you want
Interesting. Apparently it's my plan, and apparently I believe in magic unicorns
There's only one person making this personal my friend. TFA is about exploring alternative options which you seemed reluctant to accept because you appear to have some irrational hate for Elon Musk.
your Elon Musk fantasies have been proven to be exactly that, unworkable ignorant fantasies.
The Magic unicorns is your quote friend. I saw in the news that Musk's team already developed and built a rescue sub specifically for this operation. In response to your question why do people call Musk it's because of this. He has a record of responding quickly with solutions. This might not matter to you, but for people who want stuff done this has value.
We've already had this argument, way back in 14th Century Europe...
The turbine blades weigh as much as a small car and are 50 feet up in the air.
So like a crane then?
I would ask you the same question since I have travelled the world, past many more windmill fields in multiple countries than you have.
Let's go then, publish your list. Or are you asking us to just trust you, because you say so?

What eats the mosquitoes? Because whatever it is, you just wiped out a major food source for them.
Good thing you're here. This is the first time anyone ever thought about such things...
So this year the population is down 80%, the next year it'll be down another 60%... but the following year 100% of the mosquito population will be immune, and there will be 10000% more of them because the bird population decreased 80% from starvation. It's 2018 and we still have stories about Crypto and Facebook on Slashdot? Move on, nothing to see here...

Market economies and socialism are a perfectly compatible. In fact, you could say that one does not work without the other.
Oh shit, The angry old white men aren't going to like this...
You're still here? No autographs sorry bud....
If you say it enough, one day even you might believe it.
wibble wibble...
Because...
The lady doth protest too much...
Yes, it would, because you're desperately flailing trying to recover a lost argument.

Cognitive dissonance is a bitch ain't it?
