I once had a girlfriend who was into BSOD, I couldn't have sex w/ her for more than five minutes at a time before she just froze mid-act and stopped moving.
She had other weird habits to, like she kept saying 'call me bill and say i'm your daddy' and 'wear this DOJ outfit and bend over'.
yes, I've never quite understood the defense here.
"you're honor, windows was designed to have a primary purpose of reinforcing our monopoly through large scale spaghetti-izing of the code, therefore any attempt to fix this means it won't be as good at perpetuating our monopoly as before."
next they're going to tell me pieces of IE are in the kernel itself. oh wait...

For most large media operations this is the model they already operate on, it's just that the consumer doesn't know it.
The 'news' in a newspaper is really just advertising to get you to buy the 'ads' which is the real content as far as the publisher is concerned, since this is what makes them the money.
It's the same with tv. A sitcoms only use is to entice you to watch the advertisements, which is the networks real offering.
So in a sense, this is what we already do, get sucked in by transparent 'content' (i.e. the 'product') and end up paying for ads.
who ever said unix should be super easy to use anyways?
like it or not, sysadmin etc. work is skilled labor and no matter how pretty a gui you put on it doesn't mean it requires any less intelligence to do.
the difficulty in using unix is in learning the concepts, because if you understand the underlying concepts then the interface ceases to matter so much.
MS is trying to sell pretty buttons as a replacement for computer science.
because a gun doesn't have any use other than to kill someone.
kazaa can be used for legal, useful purposes, it's just that some people misuse it.
it's not like i only sometimes use my gun to hurt someone and the rest of the time it's for my gardening...
it's situations like these that show why it's so important we find a way to break the MS monopoly.
not 100% compatible w/ MS? sorry, you can't do business.
how do you get 100% compatible? well, we're not going to tell you, and hence your software company will fail.
monopoly in action...
this will never work because the console companies will all reject it.
they make the majority of their money through proprietary games that make you want to buy the console.
if square hadn't moved to sony would the playstation really have been successful? people bought the machine because you couldn't play FF on nintendo. from a business perspective, this is financial suicide.
It's great for all of _us_ to try to do something, but how can we get the word out there to people who normally wouldn't be exposed? I didn't know about the DMCA until it was too late, but I wasn't looking for it and nobody seemed to be trying to tell me anything.
Think about this, there is some million ex-Napster/Morpheus etc. users out there who will oppose this bill if only we can reach them. However, they don't respond to bland EFF alerts and people from the tech department bitching about something else they don't understand. What do we need to do? Start a ribbon campaign? Bumper stickers? Spraypaint?
Look at the incredible pool of talent we have right here. We need to get the word out there in any way we can, print, tv, websites etc.. I'm sure someone here is a genius Flash designer, we have lot's of coders, we can do it if we want. Remember Artists Against Piracy? It was a media campaign. That's exactly what we need. Help people learn and act.
What we can't do is sit idly by, do only our small little piece and hope for the best. Reach out. I told my boss about this (also a programmer) and his jaw hit the floor, he had no idea.
The internet was made to communicate quickly on a massive scale, for god's sake let's try to use it for once.
Now I am going to write my letters and I'll be telling all my friends at the bar tonight and every night after.
the author tries to make a comparison of a malfunctioning car and the consumer's right to legal action.
well, do i have the right to sue the manufacturer if someone smashes the window and drives off with my car?
similarily, i do NOT have legal rights against you if someone pulls off man in the middle or some other such hack while i'm using your software.
if i install your program and it erases all my files, then i have rights, but the author here is confusing code that is susceptible to attack w/ code that is somehow generally hazardous to use.

but they mention that the competing software from IBM even has the same bugs. that seems like pretty damning evidence if it's true...
Come on, they're sueing to force something to be put IN a product?
Not only is this ridiculous, but everywhere I look on/. everyone is yelling about how if you don't like something then 'do it yourself' which is exactly what ms DID w/.NET CLI which is (gasp!) the correct thing to do.
As much as I hate to side w/ MS, I'm sorry but this lawsuit is retarded...
Yes, but you are missing the beauty of open source. Because there is no one project manager/marketing director telling everybody one aspect to concentrate on there will always be some contributors who are more interested in stability while there will be others more interested in graphics/flashiness. So while Windows progresses focusing on one element at a time (first flashiness, now stability) Linux continues to grow on all fronts simultaneously, which IMO is a much better thing.
that would be nice, but unfortunately what most people (management types) are going to come away from this with is that a big established company they've heard of before is telling them not to believe the hype about something that so far they've mostly just heard as a buzzword. i don't see any way this could end up being good publicity.

*sigh*
I'm so sick of this buzz word crap. It's not like anyone here ever heard of a computer being used to control something or anything like that...
No really, I thought they were all hand painted and autographed...
like sue Microsoft?;)
Anyone ever read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card?
