I'm the technology teacher/administrator for a US charter school. We have Mac, Windows and the majority of our workstations are SUSE via terminal services. Workd great! We use open source as a way to talk about service and global awarness. The students resonate with the politics and finances which drive our descision. We recieved a donation of 100 legacy boxes last year, these run terminal services very well.
My 18 mo. daughter sees both of her parents on their laptops all the time (a graphic designer and a technology educator). I put Tux Paint on both machines (powerbook g4 and linux/windows ibm r52) she loves it and waves at tux...she's learned to say "blue" and "golgeegabajeeshish". The mice are too big for her so she holds down laptop button with one hand and moves mouse with other.
I plan on being ACTIVE and ENGAGED. Also I plan on providing balance and contextualizing her experience
I know I know it's not their fault...As a tech. admin for a highschool, I see the monumental waste of time and possible dangers as students spend time on myspace. I've blocked myspace.com (via squidgaurd) but the proxys make it impossible to restrict access.
I've forced our high school to migrate to OO. I've withstood buffets from everyone...students, staff, admin. I can rely on writer, calc and base...but what the kids want these days is powerpoint..impress is the bastard step child of OO and if they really wanted to have it make deeper hits at M$Office, turn impress into something impressive
Laptop, Projector, Qbasic
talk about "programming" as if it were what is going on under the hood of the car. YOu can prepare in advance some simple qbasic programs and show them how to write a graphical hellow world prgm.
They'll eat it up!
If your brother enjoys gaming, he'll dig dasher. It's mouse controled, assembles words on the fly based on login and can create odd song lyrics automatically

As a tech. teacher, I know...GAMING...teach them about server admin, c++ and how to use blender. The process of game design can encompass writing, physics, communication, math, science, art, and team work skills.
Also teach them about PROFESSIONALISM
We are a progressive charter high school in Northern Minnesota. We have Windows, Mac and Linux availble for our community. 90% of our new purchases will be towards linux. Given the correct context - cost savings, virus free(relativly) and open source - the students have embraced linux whole heartedly
what inane technology director is allowing p2p applications to be put on school computers?? This is so friggan draconian that it's beyond ridiculous!! None of me students have perms to install software on any of my machines and I regularily grep up all.mp3,.avi,.mov and other media files.
