Yeah. Physical security loss means hackable. I read this old cold-boot attack paper in Communications of the ACM months ago, and it was old even then.
IIRC, one can use a can of compressed air to chill the ram in a computer, remove it, and read its contents in an alternate machine environment designed to save out the contents of the ram. Then you extract security keys from the saved-out-contents, and do whatever you like.
I'm pretty sure the acm paper directly referenced retrieving the keys of the microsoft disc encryption software.
It's been so long, and it's been rebranded and refocused, but I thought that WebMD was originally targeted to provide such a service - digital records that would replace / glue together the mess of health care services.
Can anyone confirm that?
There's an interesting thread at dsl reports where some bell south customers point out:
1. many news groups still exist for the purpose of porn, they just aren't named alt.bin*
2. many news groups still exist with porn, erotica, sex, etc in their names.
Yesterday, I fired up Pan on att yahoo to survey the damage.
The posters were right, and there were many groups left. There were also posts in them from the last few days.
They're doing more than tab-indenting, one of them is running out for Mountain Dew and candy bars. ( Sending the dumb guy out on a real mission, priceless)
Seriously, getting the dude who knows how to hack some (gag) maxscript or perl or whatever (knows some syntax and hang-ups) to sit next to the guy who knows how to program *any* kind of data structure can really get the shit done right and in a quick way.
Working the conference is a great way to see it for free.
You get to meet the people whose session you're working, and if you're working a fully seated room where you'd normally get kicked out, you get to stay.
You get a copy of the lecture notes, though they're not always that good or complete.
The round table discussions are a more intimate place to hear people speak and to ask questions. One of my former coworkers cornered 3 publisher reps after one last year.
Um, and ya get cool Maryland schwag. The bendy pens and the T-Shirts. And whatnot.
I asked one of the Maryland reps if they had ever convinced anyone to move their business there, and she said she had. I didn't press for the names tho. The free stuff really works I guess.
Gamecube disc won't stop pirates. They'll use the extra expansion ports like they always have. Guys at my software store say they already know how to add a region switch to the basic cube.
Developer support is attracted by other factors; mostly expected audience (where the $$ in sales will be) and how easy it will be to develop for or port.
Early dev on gamecube was lame - writing to the cartridge and trading that around was slow; Xbox ethernet port allowed builds to be copied to local dev box drives.
I think programmers like developing for either one, since they both have *ssloads more RAM than ps2. But we're hedging our bets and doing simul dev/ports for all.

Um, anyone notice if you stop trying to abbreviate the 'for' it's just 'EA'?
is the dog a clippy alternative? like, a skin of clippy? the friendly non-biting version?
You have time to read NYT reviews *and* slashdot?

Are there European t.v. broadcasters that place commercials in blocks before / after television shows? I thought this used to be the case.
