In the 19th century, the United States pursued a doctrine known as Manifest Destiny, which was originally a term coined by a New York journalist in 1845. It was a belief that it was the United States' "destiny" to "spread democracy" and that it was the only acceptable form of government in the West, and it was also used to expand the U.S. into the native controled lands of the current western United States.

So yeah, we've seen it all before. Its still not a reason to have 3rd world countries come in and monitor the biggest and most efficient representative republics in the world. That's just insulting to everybody who helped form this country and those who fought for it.

  13. You're obviously not from Louisiana... on Licensing Computer Techs As TV Repairmen · · Score: 4, Insightful

Louisiana is a different place than the rest of the country. First off, the state uses Napoleanic Code (which is derived from Roman Law) while the rest of the nation is using English Common Law. Every governmental position in the state is elected, NONE are appointed.

Secondly, the state has continously put political machines into office. Fmr. Gov. Edwin Edwards (3-term governor) is currently serving a prison sentence in Dallas because of a variety of charges, basically stemming from taking bribes from casinos. Then back in the day, we had Huey Long, followed by his brother Earl Long. Huey even had a box where he kept all the kickbacks from state businesses and employees.

Hell, to become a notary public in Louisiana, you've got to get approval from the Governor!

The state has some of the most corrupt, crooked, and just plain old screwed up politics in the nation. Every profession you can think of has to be licensed - and especially now, because the state is running low on cash (thank you Kathleen Blanco), taxes are extremely high.

Most businesses just stay out of Louisiana since the cost of doing business there, unless you know somebody, is extreme. Its good-ole-boy politics at its finest.

What really lost the election for the conservatives in Spain was not the Madrid bombing itself, but the incumbents botched efforts at blaming the attack on ETA. Their lies were shown for what they were, and they lost the election. Maybe this should be a lesson to governments in other nations.

Care of the wikipedia entry on the 3/11 attacks:

Cuban president Fidel Castro was more critical, however. Speaking during a television interview on 13 March 2004 in Havana, Castro accused Spain's government of deceiving its citizens over the Madrid train bombings for electoral gain. He went on to assert that Prime Minister José María Aznar had known an Islamic group was behind the explosions on 11 March, but preferred to blame ETA ahead of the general elections which were due just three days away.

Mistakes happen. The word from the governor of Basque County was ETA did it, and the government took it and ran with it.
