I love that he put as a theme and not a myth that Microsoft OS needs to be rebooted at least once a day. I can tell you of a few hundred WIndows 2000 machines that get rebooted once a month at most. While most of these are at work we do give each user admin rights to their own machine (don't ask - it has to do with a software product that I would rather not discuss) and theoretically they could install whatever they want.

At home, I know my girlfriend has restarted her computer once in the last month and that was because I installed a new burner. Last time I checked, even Linux requires you to shut down before working inside the case (hot-swappable excluded).

Now I may come across as Pro-Microsoft in this rant (and in others on slashdot) but my point is actually quite different. I do use Linux. The email address you see above is thanks to a qmail server running on Slackware. If you are going to rant against Microsoft than take something like security. By ranting on something that is outright wrong only makes you look like a fool and a professor stating it is a black eye for the open-source community.

We ended up with a compromise to keep the calendar part of Exchange running until the other products calendar app is ready. Just yesterday I had to set up a meeting with two VP's. This avoids both emailing large files and explaining FTP to users. I would also set a max size on file attachments.

If you are running a mom and pop business it can be simple but the minute you start dealing with inventory (LIFO vs FIFO), Fixed Assets (straight-line vs double-declining), Accounts Payable (aging, check writing, vendor tax ids), Accounts Receivable (aging, revenue recognition), Cash (multiple bank accounts, ZBA accounts, over-night sweeps), Cash vs Accrual basis vs Tax Basis, etc.

Add to that the need for a good report writer (which is very hard to find) and you have quite a beast. Most companies have whole departments dedicated to Financial Systems.

I know that there are several accounting packages out there that support Linux (Computron being one) but they are mostly expensive.

The one problem with an open-source accounting package is that accounting standards are constantly changing and the software would often have to be changed to reflect new standards. Anyone working on such a project would have to be well-versed in each of the new SFAS (Statements of Financial Accounting Standards) as they come out. That's not a fun project for a CPA let alone a layperson.

I will also give you an example that doesn't involve any Microsoft product at all. Our General Ledger software is running on AIX. We had to update to an interim release to correct an issue (that happened to be new to the latest version). Unfortunately, with that release they have minimum requirements in order to receive support. To meet those requirements we had to update AIX and Oracle. So not only did we have to update their product because of a mistake that appeared in their latest release but we also had to update the OS and the Database so that we could continue to receive support from them. I am sure that other people have other non-MS stories.

I think it is time you stop wasting your efforts bashing Microsoft and start looking at the deceipt and corruption that is in all companies. Profit and Customer Satisfaction are two diverging paths and every company will err towards the profit side.
