While I don't think that the Linux kernel is a good example, I think that the major Linux distros (Redhat, etc.) could be. I don't think that they most of them are above playing the marketing game. The only difference is that they must offer their OS for free by download.
I remember when the Matrix came out there was a similar debate about the influences and the deeper meaning behind it. Some people associated Neo with Jesus; others noticed the Simulacra and Simulation book in the movie and applied that; still others applied the teachings of Jung and the collective unconscious.
The point is that there are probably several things that influenced Tolkien both directly (or consciously) and indirectly (or unconsciously). This holds true for everything and anything ever written. Really one of the best places to look at this is religion. We are all fairly familiar with the similarities between Greek and Roman Gods (because the Roman's were greatly influence by the Ancient Greeks) but the correlations occur with many other distant religions. Virgin (or miraculous) births, sibling rivalry, great floods etc. appear in many different religions.
In summary, we are all the product of thousands of years of collective ideas and experiences. While the names in Tolkien's works may be from Norse or Germanic mythology, the ideas are from all of World History.
I think you can look beyond Microsoft to see that many companies offer new versions of their software every 1-2 years. It's hard to find specific links with product version histories but I know that Adobe, Macromedia, Corel, etc. upgrade along that line. I also know that many business applications have new versions every year and often stop supporting older versions.
I am not condoning this but I can tell you that there as bad if not worse culprits than Microsoft.
I was about to post about Adventure. I put Easter Eggs into two separate categories though. I love the idea that I've played the game and now I can go to the (not-so) secret cow level. Just like the name implies, it's like finding that chocolate easter egg under the fir tree in your front yard. It's a reward for playing the game.
On the other hand, cheats are really about changing gameplay. In theory, they are there for testing purposes but they are really there to help sell the game through the cheat magazines. Think about it. If your game didn't have cheats it wouldn't be featured on the cover of the gamer magazines.
Yes I am replying to my own post. I have to add that last nights episode was a great study of the narrow view people have when it comes to religion. I very firmly believe that all religions are valid and that we should encourage our children to study each so that they can find the one that suits them best.
Very few shows would touch that subject as the Simpsons did for fear of provoking the zealots to protest.
Any show that has Stephen Hawkings as guest star is definitely intelligent enough to be a university class.
I have been a huge Simpsons fan since the beginning and I am still constantly amazed at how almost anything can remind me of a Simpsons episode (including the horrors of 9/11).
To me, the Simpsons ranks with All in the Family, M*A*S*H and I Love Lucy among the best shows of all time. Each show dealt with subjects that went far beyond your average sitcom and delved straight into America culture(i.e. a Cuban Man and an Irish Woman in the ultra-conservative 50's, a racist sexist bigot, realities/horrors of war, etc.).
Shows don't last as long as these shows (including syndication) by accident.
I was able to plug my Sega Genesis controllers in and they played much better than the old joysticks. If I remember correctly I don't think it worked for paddle games though.
Man. See - you can say bullshit like that and get away with it. I am using Dell for my example since they are I believe still the most popular in the PC world (personally I have a IBM T22 from work and build my own desktops/servers).
First, it's hard to compare on equal footing. The Ibook has a 12.1" display vs the 14 and 15 inch displays on the Dells. That big of a difference can have significant weight and price differences.
Second, built in ethernet and modems are pretty much standard on all the systems I looked at.
Third, You got me on the battery. Right now batteries suck.
Fourth, I've never seen a laptop without VGA out. The Dells also include S-Video (TV) out.
Fifth, Dell doesn't have the firewire option yet. Sony and Apple are really pushing that standard while USB 2.0 is being pushed by other companies. For most users this is a non-issue. Firewire is great for Digital camcorders and external drives. Considering that the card costs about $50 (and drivers usually come with the card) I don't think it is a big issue.
Sixth, Dell is offering free dvd or burner upgrades. The Ibooks have them but for a cost.
Both systems chintz on memory but they are about equal in price to upgrade.
Finally, seeing as that I am getting tired, every Mac addict talks about Photoshop. Do you realize that 92% (a guess) of the world doesn't care about Photoshop? The average consumer isn't going to buy $600 image editing software. Adobe has always focused on the Mac and that is why it performs better there. On the other hand, Adobe sucks on the PC. A lot of their products (Acrobat for example) are famous for being crapy, buggy software.
In summary, both systems cost about the same and you are hardly getting twice as much out of your Mac. Maybe later I'll see what I could buy for $2400.
"I personally believe that all critical infrastructure should be the property of the people. The roads, the electric wires, the plumbing, Mae east and west, all of it. The government paid for most of it to begin with."
I personally disagree very strongly. The government already has their noses in everything as it is. What you are suggesting essentially is a change towards socialism.
There are some major downsides to Cable vs DSL. Optimum does not offer static IP's (that I know of at least) and makes no guarantees of service levels. I have SDSL through Speakeasy and because it is considered by Covad a business class line there are certain guarantees of service. Of course, everything has to first go through Verizon since they are the local telco.
A lot of the comments have focused on "only $42K," "when will he sell out," etc. I personally think that everybody is so obsessed with money here that they automatically assume that he is going to behave in a way like they would. I know several small business owners (including myself and some of them my clients) who have no interest in making it big. They want to find their niche and make a comfortable living.
I personally have a full time job at a money grubbing corporation that pays very well. I also, on my spare time (and sometimes at work), maintain a low maintenance small business. My girlfriend also lives at home full time and has her own small business. Now I don't put in the 80 hour weeks at my real job to ever make senior management and my small business is never going to bring in more than a few grand every year but I am very comfortable.
This gentlemen is probably good friends with his 70 customers. He probably makes support house calls for just a cup of coffee. They probably bake him cookies at christmas. Who knows? To me his business is really a joint venture between him and all of his customers. It actually reminds me of the good how set up the T1 network is his neighborhood.
Wow. You really need to calm down. I made no comment about one being any better than the other. I just said that you can compile apache, perl and php on any os that has a c compiler. I never should have even mentioned windows since it wasn't even my point.
Why fake it? To get your story on slashdot. He may really have put all the stuff on there but that doesn't mean he is actually hosting the site with it.
I understand your point but I could also compile the latest apache, perl, and php on my Windows machine (or pretty much any machine that I had a c compiler for).
I may have to convince somebody at work to give me one of the old 7200's sitting in the closet. I saw a couple of stacks of them the other day justing sitting around collecting dust.
Towards the end of our Mac days we tried Virtual PC (this was back in 99) and I remember it being something awful. Pretty much brought the G3's to a crawl and we had a lot of networking issues. I assume they have made a lot of progress since then.
Take a look here:
A Jungian Analysis of the Matrix
and then come back and make an intelligent informed post.

I think what he is saying that Microsoft as a company can not be good or evil. It is the actions of individuals that people should take issue with.
I think you can look beyond Microsoft to see that many companies offer new versions of their software every 1-2 years. The human mind is far from backwards compatible. Have you ever tried to sit through a movie like Mousetrap. Kids eat that stuff up.

"why the hell is it, by the way, that stupid people breed much faster than us smart ones?"
Because they don't spend all day on slashdot.
Verizon DSL is the worst in the world. That is why I use Speakeasy. Unfortunately everything has to go through Verizon.
I was able to plug my Sega Genesis controllers in and they played much better than the old joysticks. If I remember correctly I don't think it worked for paddle games though.

"doesn't have half the hardware at the same price" That's not trolling?
Wow. You really need to calm down. I made no comment about one being any better than the other. I just said that you can compile apache, perl and php on any os that has a c compiler. I never should have even mentioned windows since it wasn't even my point.

I will say that they are definitely a huge improvement but I am still a pretty plain guy. I am happy with my black T22 and my beige Antec.
Towards the end of our Mac days we tried Virtual PC (this was back in 99) and I remember it being something awful. Pretty much brought the G3's to a crawl and we had a lot of networking issues. I assume they have made a lot of progress since then.
I didn't realize Suse had a PowerPC port. I was actually looking at Suse to replace my slackware box.
